Please Help Me, I'm Falling

Does anyone remember the song by that title, sung by Hank Locklin?  Country and Western (which is what we called it) songs were very popular when I was growing up and that was one of my favorite songs!  The song is about falling in love, but, that's not what brought the song to my mind, today!  I had to change the lyrics, slightly:  "Please help me, I've fallen, in the garden again"!

I was out watering the garden, this morning.  I did the front garden first and that went well.  Then, I moved to the back garden and that's when I fell again!  I was straightening out the garden hose and I am not sure if I tripped on the hose or the crack in the paved path, but, the next thing I knew, I was falling forward and there was nothing to grab onto to stop the fall!  I did put out my right hand, palm down, to try and break the fall, which helped.  I scraped both knees, but the right knee took the brunt of it.

The good thing was, I didn't break anything (I have osteopenia, which is the beginning of osteoporosis) or knock my head on the cemented path.  The bad thing was, I seem to be unable to get back up by myself after a fall!  I need to have something to hold on to in order to get up!  The good thing was I had my cell phone with me and my daughter was inside the house (she was working and didn't hear me call out for her), so I could call her on her cell phone: "Please help me, I've fallen, in the garden again!"  She immediately rushed out and helped me up!  Such a blessing to have her home!

Apparently, I don't need to chase any bunny rabbits to fall in the garden!

Daughter insisted that I rested for awhile after that.  But, later in the evening, I went back out and finished watering the back yard.  It needed to be watered because M took the Friday after Thanksgiving off and the garden didn't get the regular Friday watering.  We've been having 80F weather and very dry Santa Ana winds, recently, so the garden was very dry.

After I finished watering, I took a few pictures of the Kent Mango Family:

Clark Kent Supermango

Clark seems to have finally got over his sulk about being transplanted and has begun to grow a new set of leaves!

Lois Lane Kent Mango

Lois, on the other hand, sprouted directly in the soil and, although she sprouted after Clark did, has grown taller than Clark!

Conner Kent (SuperBoy) Mango

Conner was transplanted shortly after he sprouted and has taken well to growing in the soil.  He still hasn't grown a second set of leaves, but, his first set looks very healthy.    He will soon be joined by Tommy (Tommy Atkins mango, sprouted from seed) which is still in a jar of water inside the house.

Today, I am grateful for:

- I didn't hurt myself badly when I fell
- My daughter was home to help me up
- I had my phone with me to call her
- I was still able to finish watering the garden
- Mango seedlings!

Today's joyful activity was ordering some Christmas gifts for my cousin's grandsons, aged 2 and just turned 5!

Plans for tomorrow include going to the Sri Lankan store to pick up an order of groceries and treats we put in, today!

How was your Monday?  What were some of your favorite songs when you were growing up?

  1. Thank goodness you did not do too much damage to yourself. Although some sore stiff muscles might just show up later today to remind you of the fall. Sending lots of healing thoughts your way. The Clark family are looking good.

    1. Thank you for the healing thoughts, Mary-Lou; they are helping. :) I took a Tylenol before I went to sleep, last night, and haven't felt too sore this morning. I think I'll live! :D

I'm pleased with my mango plants! I hope they will survive our winter, which is fairly mild, but, there can be some cold nights in January and February. Might have to find a way to tent them, some nights.

    1. Thank you, Eileen; yes, a blessing that she was here to help! I need to practice picking myself up off the ground! LOL. The plants are loving the weather we are having! I should do another garden update! Hope all is well with you and your husband.

  3. Bless, I'm so glad you weren't hurt worse from your fall. Scolding coming -
Be More Careful! ok Scolding Over.
Hoses can be quite cumbersome and I can see how you could trip over one. Do you think that is what happened?

I am seeing a lot of mangos in your future.

    1. Thank you, Debra. I got scolded by my daughter, too! LOL. I lost my balance. I was trying to step over a loop in the hose. I don't know if I tripped on the hose or the crack in the path (there is a gap in the cemented path which has been filled in with a paving stone, but, the paving stone has sunk a bit lower than the level of the path). I might have to ask M to lift up the paver and add more dirt to bring it up even with the cement.

Ooh, I hope there will be more mangos in my future! I have no idea if these seedlings will ever grow big enough to produce fruit or if I'd live long enough to see it happen! :D

  4. So glad you didn't do any serious damage when falling. Getting up is certainly hard, it's fortunate you could get your daughter to help. The mango plants look very healthy.
I brushed snow off the deck yesterday but it now has a fresh cover of about an inch! I made up the door swag and fastened some red bows to the greenery I assembled beside the steps and put out my angels on the dining room windowsill. But I really need to bake.....

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. I'm glad I didn't break anything! Once my knee heals, I need to practice getting myself up from the ground!
The mango plants are coming along nicely, aren't they? :)
Oh, I bet it looks beautiful, up there, with the snow on the ground and the house getting decorated for Christmas! Soon there will be the lovely aroma of baking! We are enjoying some warmer weather down here and I'm loving it! :)

  5. Oh I'm so glad you weren't seriously hurt. I remember my doctor saying that falls like that are more common than people think as we get older (and after all you are older than me! 😂😁). You've now fallen twice in just over six weeks and I honestly hope that it doesn't happen again, but maybe it's a good idea to be proactive and work out what you need to do to be able to get up if there is nobody there to help you. Can you remember whether you wearing the same shoes both times?

    1. Thank you, Eileen. Yes, I'm older than you are and you'd better show respect to your elders, young lady! LOL! I had on a different pair of shoes, this time (the other pair was tossed as it was old and starting to tear!) I think I tend to lose my balance when I lean forwards - guess I'm top heavy! :D I probably need to do some leg strengthening exercises (lunges, squats, etc.) This business of getting older is much overrated! :D

    2. YouTube is your friend with this. There are lots of simple videos on improving your balance. I'll try to be more respectful to my elders in future ... i.e. YOU 😂😂

    3. Thank you, Eileen; I shall look for some videos online. My daughter also showed me some exercises to strengthen my ham strings and core muscles when I described the particular problem I am having. Looking forward to being treated with more respect in the future! :D

  6. Do take care Bless. I fell out of bed yesterday (staying at my aunt's, in a bed that is narrower and much higher than my own at home) one feels so stupid falling when grown up. My toddler grandson stays upright better!!

  7. Bless, I am very glad you were not hurt in that fall. Be careful! I also can't get up anymore without having something to hold on to. This last week has been hard, as my sister passed away the day after Thanksgiving. She had been so ill for so long, in some ways it was a blessing but I will always miss her deeply. I sat by her and was able to say goodbye. Your blog and others have been a good distraction for me. Thank you. My beast to you, Celie.

    1. Oh, Celie, I am so sorry to hear that your sister has passed. ((((HUGS)))) I know she had been ill and you were expecting it, but, even so, it is still very hard to lose a loved sister. May she be at peace and free from pain. Please convey my deepest sympathies to your niece, too. Take care of yourself, too, Celie.

    1. Thank you, Jules. Yes, it was a blessing that my daughter was home to help! I looked at those stepping stones you had to cross on your walk and knew I would never be able to make it across! :D

  9. Gosh - when I saw that title pop up in my feed I was rather alarmed that it was a cry for emotional help or something! Sorry to hear your tripped over but pleased daughter was there and you have survived in one piece. I hope no lasting effects the following day :o)

    1. Oops, sorry to have alarmed you, Lady Ella. It was just me taking a tumble! Apparently, a common occurrence among older people (see Eileen's comment, above; she has very kindly pointed out that I am older! :D) Yes, it was a blessing that my daughter was home and could help me up; I need to build up more strength in my legs so I can stand up without help! I'm a bit achy and sore from the fall, but, otherwise, OK. :)

  10. Oh Bless, I had to come out of my blogging hibernation after I saw your last email. I'm so glad you didn't hurt yourself, and your daughter was there.

It's scary to think how you would have gotten up if your daughter hadn't been there to help. Can you use one of those emergency buttons? Things you can press to call for help? I've seen them on TV.
Or let the garden wilt until M comes back. Your health is more important than a dry garden. :) Seriously, I remind my mom this constantly, as she too has a habit of pottering around in the garden when my sister is not at home.

    Take care Bless.

    1. Sorry to have made you come out from your hibernation, Nil! :D I am considering getting one of those alert things! If I fall in the front garden, at least someone passing by or a neighbor might see me; no one will be able to see me in the back yard. I suppose, if I was alone, unless I was badly hurt, I might have managed to get up or crawled until I reached something I could have held onto and got up. I told M that he's not allowed to go on vacation after this! :D Thanks for checking on me, Nil. :)
