Daughter and I put in an order for groceries, late last night. I drove to the grocery store and picked it up, this morning (actually, the store clerk loaded all the bags into the trunk and gave me a thumbs up! LOL).
This week, the store was having whole turkeys on sale for $1.59/lb. (Thanksgiving is next week). However, if you bought $25 worth of groceries in a single shopping order, then, the turkey will be on sale for $0.49/lb., limit 1 turkey per grocery order! Even at $1.59/lb., it was cheaper than chicken, which I've been buying at $1.99/lb. Normally, daughter and I would have bought a whole chicken to roast for the two of us, as a whole turkey would have been too much, but, poultry at $.49/lb. is a very good deal! Too good to pass up! Especially, these days! I will freeze the cooked turkey meat in portions and have that instead of chicken for weeks to come! Whether I have any room in the freezer is another matter, but, we will make room!
Today, I bought:
1 loaf multi-grain bread (24 oz) = $1.99
1/2 gal. half and half = $3.99
1 x 16 slice pack (12 oz.) American cheese slices = $1.97 (good sale price!)
1 container whipped topping (8 oz.) = $1.50 (got to have whipped topping for the Thanksgiving pies!)
1 bottle (16 fl. oz.) honey mustard salad dressing = $3.79
16 oz. container salad greens mix = $4.99 (they actually substituted 3x 5 oz. containers)
1 lb. sugar snap peas = $4.99
1 cucumber = $.99
1 broccoli crown @ $1.98/lb = $1.47
2 packets (5 oz, each) wafer cookies (1 vanilla, 1 chocolate) @$.99 = $1.98 (I've been craving these!)
1 bag hot Cheetos = $3.49
2+ lb. apples @ $.99/lb. = $2.17
1+ lb. pears @ $1.49/lb = $1.82
3 lb. bag mandarins = $4.99
1 papaya (2.96 lb) @ $.98/lb = $2.93
2 mangoes @ $1 = $2.00
3+ lb. bananas @ $.65/lb = $2.05
1 x 2lb. bag fresh cranberries = $3.99 (I prefer to make my own cranberry sauce)
1 x 6 oz. container blueberries = $2.50
2 pkts. store brand Italian sausages @ $2.97 with digital coupon = $5.94
2 cans (15 oz. each) sardines in tomato sauce, $1.67@ = $3.34
1 turkey (12.27 lb.) @ $.48/lb (according to the receipt; sales ad said $.49/lb.) = $6.01
Total = $68.89
According to the receipt the total price of all the items would have been $98.16 if I had paid the regular prices. But, since I bought some items that were on sale and a couple of items that had digital coupons, as well, I saved $29.27 from the original price and my total came to $68.89.
As mentioned before, my regular grocery budget for the month is $250 for two people. Plus, I still have almost $80 ($79.61 to be exact) left from what was carried over from the August and September grocery budgets.
So far, in November, I have spent: $74.98 (on 11/2) + $68.89 (on 11/16) = $143.87
I have $106 left in the regular budget for this month, plus the $80 I've carried over. I anticipate doing one more grocery shopping trip at the end of this month.
As always, I feel blessed to be able to budget what I do for my groceries. And I am very, very grateful to be able to buy my groceries. I have heard, very recently, from family and friends in Sri Lanka, who are faced with high prices and shortages of what one of my cousins said were "essential consumer items".
How are you coming along with your grocery shopping, this month?
I am doing better with shopping. Sad, but as I'm at Jane's with my MIL three days a week I don't have time to run to the shops as I might have done in the past. This means I am doing a lot better at meal planning and shopping. Not the way I would want it to happen, but I do seem to be spending less.
ReplyDeleteThere is a saying, "No great loss without some small gain"; you've lost Jane, but, you've gained more control over meal planning, shopping, and spending. :)
DeleteI always manage to make room in the freezer for things I hadn't plan to buy but are a bargain not to be missed.
ReplyDeleteThe price on the turkey was too good to miss! Space shall be found! :D
DeleteDid you get your vaccine today? If so, I hope it went well and you aren't feeling any side effects. I had my booster and so far, I'm feeling OK. :)
That is an amazing price for your Thanksgiving turkey. Meal planning is the key to keep within the budget. So far I'm 2 1/2 weeks without a shop - I am trying to empty the freezer for a good clean & then re-stocking, the last week of November, enough to keep me out of the stores until the late December early January. I am most thankful for this bounty.
ReplyDeleteI was very happy to see the turkey at that price. It's on sale again, this week, too, for $.49/lb. with a $25 purchase. I've read some blogs where they buy several turkeys when they are on sale at prices like that and keep on hand for later on. I don't have the freezer space for that, but, this one turkey will provide us with lots of meals. :)
DeleteSounds like you are doing well with your grocery shopping! Sometimes, I can wait 3 weeks before I grocery shop, but, more recently, it has been every 2 weeks. :)
I do like seeing the savings on the receipt too. It is real at the grocery store compared to other places that so highly discount everything that there is no such thing as a non-sale price. But at the grocery, the tiny savings seem more real.
ReplyDeleteI need to get to the grocery today or tomorrow, and hope that the turkeys are on sale. Thanksgiving is on the doorstep and I have only given it thought and little action.
Yes, the grocery store sales are real savings, aren't they? I hope turkey is on sale at your stores, too, and you are able to get all your Thanksgiving menu items at a good price. :)
DeletePrices are going up here, too, and specials in the store seem to run out fast!
ReplyDeleteYou will be interested to know that US health providers are not the only ones who can frustrate you. My mammogram yesterday should, in fact, have taken place in our local hospital. Instead I drove a long way only to find that I was in the wrong place. I had queried the location when I got the appointment phone call and was assured that they are not done locally now! Well, I will be joining you having one (locally) in January now. At least I got my donations delivered, and found some yarn in the CS.
Oh, no! I'm so sorry that you had to drive a long distance only to find that they made a mistake! Glad you were able to get at least one other errand done to make use of that long drive!
DeleteI've been hearing on the news about the rains and flooding in the northwest, including part of Canada; I don't think you are anywhere near there, but, hope you don't have any friends or family who are impacted.
The turkey was a bargain wasn't it? I haven't had any good deals like that but I have managed to save this month. I don't seem to be eating as much meat lately so that's helping to keep costs down.
ReplyDeleteGlad to read that you're feeling okay after your booster. 😊
The turkey was a very good bargain! I am already planning all the different ways I can use the turkey meat! :)
DeleteWell done with saving money on groceries, this month. Meatless meals are a good way to keep costs down and, probably, better for us and the planet, too!
Thank you; I'm feeling well. Even less sore than I was after the flu jab! :)
You are staying well within your budget.
ReplyDeleteMy mother liked those wafer cookies. I would get the pack that also included the strawberry ones. :)
Thanks for mentioning the cool whip style topping lol
I was lucky with my turkey too. One of our regular stores had a similar sale as yours - With a $25 purchase the turkey was .39 a pound. What a great price. I laughed when I looked at the receipt and saw my Thanksgiving turkey came out to $4.72!
I thought I had heard on the news that turkeys were going to be in short supply and much more expensive. I'm glad that doesn't appear to be the case.
Thank you, Bushlady. I think I've made up for going over budget, earlier in the year! :)
DeleteI was tempted to get a packet of strawberry flavored wafers, too, but, thought I'd better limit myself to just these two! It has been years since I last bought any, but, sometimes, I get these cravings. :)
Ha, ha, cool whip is what I bought!
I'm glad you were able to get your turkey at that great price! I, too, read somewhere that there might be a shortage of turkey - I wasn't too bothered because I was planning to get a chicken to roast, anyway! But, I'm glad that there seems to be plenty of turkeys to go around! :)
