September Groceries - Part 3

Today, I picked up the groceries I ordered, yesterday.

I bought:

1/2 gal. half & half (reg. price $4.69) = $3.99
1/2 gal. whole milk (reg. price $2.49) = $2.19
1 ice cream, 14 fl. oz.,( reg. price $5.29) =  $2.99
1 box ice cream bars, (reg. price $4.69) = $2.99 (ordered a 3 ct. and received a 6 ct. at the same price!)
Bagels (6 ct., 18 oz) = $1.99
3 boxes crackers (rice crackers with almonds), (reg. price $2.99@), $1.49@ = $4.47
1 bag Hot Cheetos, (reg. price $3.99) = $2.50
1 lb. Frozen shrimp = $6.99/lb (ordered 1 lb. bag; received two 10oz. bags at same price)
3 mangos, $1@ = $3
Kale, 16 oz. = $1.49

Total for groceries = $32.60

September grocery budget = $250 (+ $60 from August)

Spent to date = $75.36 + $90.80 + $32.60 = $198.76

I also purchased 1 doz. roses, which came to $10.95 with tax, but that doesn't come from my grocery budget.  The roses are to take to the cemetery, tomorrow, when I go to visit aunt T's gravesite.  I didn't attend her funeral when she passed away, last year, due to Covid concerns, but, I told her daughter, my cousin V, that I would like to visit her grave.  Cousin asked me to wait until they put the gravestone and texted me earlier in the week to say that the gravestone was now in place.  Cousin wanted to take us out to lunch at a nearby Thai restaurant, but, I told her that my daughter and I don't feel comfortable eating out in a restaurant, yet.  Instead, I am planning to cook a few things to take for my cousin, since she's after surgery.

In the evening, M tended to the garden.  He pruned one of the curry leaf trees, today as its branches were knocking on the garage roof.  He also pruned back one of the euphorbia bushes as it is trying to take over the garden!  I gave him three mango seeds I germinated, so he, too, could try growing them.  He gave me a pomegranate he had found when pruning a neighbor's overhanging branches!  Since my pomegranate tree didn't bear any fruits, this year, I was happy to receive this pomegranate.

Cousin P blessed me with a pair of shoes (sneakers), today, that she said were too heavy for her.  We both wear the same size shoes and they fit me perfectly.  I had been wanting a new pair of sneakers for some time, now, but, had been waiting until the Covid situation was better to go shopping for a pair.  So, the pair of shoes that my cousin gave me is very welcome!  She also gave me a pair of pants which fit my daughter well.  I thanked her with some chocolates and a box of crackers.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Being able to order groceries online and pick up curbside
- The store substituting larger sizes at no additional cost!
- Cousin P blessing me with a pair of shoes
- M tending to the garden for me and giving me a pomegranate
- Water for the garden

Today's joyful act was enjoying some of the ice cream I bought!  LOL.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit cousin V and go with her to visit her parents' grave (it's a double grave).

How was your Friday?  How is your grocery shopping and grocery budget for this month coming along?  What are your plans for the weekend?

  1. It doesn't sound right to say I hope you have a good time with your cousin as you will be visiting your auntie's grave, but I think you know what I mean.

I haven't sorted out my September spending yet. I was debating about switching to Aldi but have decided not to at present. My usual supermarket price matches quite a few products to Aldi's prices so there is no gain there, plus my usual supermarket delivers. With Aldi I'd have to do click and collect which costs more than the delivery charge I pay, plus I'd have a five mile drive each way to collect the order and even longer once the roads flood in the winter. I've decided that, all things considered, I'm better off paying for the convenience of the delivery while the Covid situation continues to be a cause for concern.

    1. I do know what you mean, Eileen, and yes, I did have a good time visiting with my cousins (her sister R was there, too). Their father was my mother's younger brother T (well, his initials are E T, but, we always called him T), so that's our relationship. Cousin V and cousin P have a double relationship! V's mother T was the younger sister of P's father N and P's mother M was the sister of both uncle T and my mother L. Yes, the brother and sister of one family married the brother and sister of the other family! Or, as my uncle T used to say, "N married my sister, so to get even with him, I married his sister!" :D

It sounds like it might be better for you to stay with your current supermarket, especially if they price match and it means you don't have to drive in inclement weather. :)

  2. That was fortunate to get the 2 10 oz packages of shrimp as a replacement for the pound you ordered :)
How wonderful to received the sneakers just as you were needing them.

My last month bulk waste day was cancelled due to staffing problems and rescheduled for a week from today. All of the things I was going to take have been waiting in my garage (and more added lol)
I have continued to work in the garage to clean and declutter it. This morning I was gazing upon the donation items waiting to go.
Thinking how it will be empty a week from today, I smiled lost in imagination of the open space I will be gaining.

    1. It was a nice surprise to receive the extra 4 oz. of shrimp, free! Also, this way, I can cook one bag and still have another bag in the freezer for another time. :) Shrimp is definitely a splurge item, but, every now and then, one needs to splurge a little. :)

I have a little system for sneakers. I usually buy a new pair every couple of years or so (the last pair I bought was in 2017; I bought a pair of boots in 2019). Then, I wear the new pair as my "good shoes" (used to wear them to the office, now when I attend casual gatherings, doctor's visits, etc.). The previous "good" pair becomes my 2nd best pair for running errands (picking up groceries, etc.) and the older pair of 2nd best becomes my gardening shoes! Early this year, the soles on my gardening shoes came off the shoes and so, I was wearing my 2nd best pair for both gardening and running errands! They have now developed scuffs and rips in them! They are still fine for the garden, but, I feel embarrassed to wear them to run errands (except, as long as I am in the car, it doesn't really matter, does it?) So, I have been thinking I should get myself a new pair of shoes, when my cousin gave me this pair! They will do well as my "running errands" pair. They are name brand sneakers and probably cost more than my current "good" pair, but, the current good pair is plain black and goes well with any outfit (the shoes I received are mostly white and a silvery grey, with touches of blue and lime green!)

Sounds like you will be more than ready for the bulk waste day, next week! I, too, have items in the garage, waiting to be donated. Some of the clothes have been there so long that they probably need to be washed again, before donating! What are you planning to do with all the space you'll be gaining in your garage? :)

    2. Walk! lol
It's a pile that's in the way now awaiting it's removal.
The space will remain space :)

  3. You do get good value on your groceries! I am making no progress on decluttering! Only one book so far this month. You're doing great! Celie

    1. Thank you, Celie. I try to get the best deals! :) It's OK if you didn't do much decluttering this month. I will be decluttering in October, too; maybe you can join me then. :)

  4. I can't wait to her if the pomegranate tree thrives. I am hopeful that this year since I will no longer have to take care of Mom's house I will be able to turn my garden and yard around a little.

    1. My pomegranate tree is a bit temperamental! Last year, it produced a good crop and I was able to distribute some to my neighbors, too. This year, it flowered, but, didn't produce any fruit. I might have to fuss over it a bit more, next year! I'm sure you'll have more time and energy now to concentrate on your own house and garden, with Mom's house no longer your responsibility. :)

  5. I got ice cream bars on special too, this week. Nice to get the sneakers. I once was given two lovely pairs of sandals in the days when I had younger, prettier feet! Today someone offered DH some pants but the inseam was too short. Can't win them all.
I've found some jewellery items to donate and a dead butterfly in a box to get rid of. No yard work today, the house needed a good dusting and vacuuming.

    1. The one nice thing about ice cream bars is they come in premeasured serving sizes, so, it is easier to portion control! Unless you decide to have 2 of them! One of my other cousins gave my daughter more clothes, today! She wanted to give her some boots, too, but daughter's shoe size is bigger than my cousin's! You are doing well with your decluttering! I didn't do any yard work or house work, today!

  6. Hope you have a nice visit with cousin despite the circumstances. Good for you with the decluttering! I think I am going to plan on October decluttering. One thing I have realised with Mum's passing is that we all have too much stuff and, at the end of the day, someone has to sort through and decide what are treasures and what aren't. It's all made me realise that there is a lot I can get rid of and I'm not sure why I'm hanging onto it.

    1. Thank you, Sharon; I did have a very nice visit with my cousins, today. I will be decluttering in October, too! My cousins were saying how hard it was to go through and dispose of their mother's belongings. The bigger things like furniture weren't a problem as they had family members who wanted them, but, the smaller things like china, collectibles, etc., were harder to sort through.

  7. I rotate my sneakers much like you do and it's about time for a new pair for me, too. However, I don't think any will be coming my way unless I go to the store.

    1. Yes, that's the problem with buying shoes! You can order them, I suppose, but, you never know if they will fit you properly or not until you try them on! Hope you'll have a safe shopping trip for shoes, in the near future. :)
