Sunday morning, I woke up to an offer of doughnuts from neighbor S and her daughter N! They had extra doughnuts and would we like to have some? Well, I am not able to say no to doughnuts, so, of course, I said, yes, please! I had made coconut roti (flat bread) for dinner on Saturday and I gave a few roti in return. S had said she doesn't eat coconut, but, N texted my daughter saying she liked the roti.
N had also mentioned that she had seen the rabbits, too. That's right! Rabbits! Plural! Two to be exact! N said they were in the middle of the road on Saturday night! Uh-oh! So far I have only seen one rabbit at a time!
Later in the evening on Sunday, I was watering the front garden, when one of the people in the neighboring house walked by (there are several people living in that house, including in their converted garage and two motor homes that are parked in their driveway). I asked him about the rabbits and he said there were two white rabbits and they were his friend's. I said the rabbits are roaming all over, but, he didn't seem concerned about it. Apparently, they are not someone's "lost" pets; they are pets who are allowed to roam around!
Still later on Sunday evening, as I was preparing some soup for dinner (chicken and vegetable soup), there was a knock on the front door. When I went to answer it, it was someone who was out walking and had seen the bunnies! She asked if they were my rabbits (I guess they were outside my yard?) and I said no. She said they were on the road and she was concerned that they might get run over by a vehicle. She wanted to call the City's Animal Control to pick them up if they didn't belong to anyone. I said they belong to the people next door and suggested she spoke with them. I saw her standing by their gate, but, I don't know if she spoke with anyone. I hope she did and they are keeping their rabbits in their yard. I haven't seen them today.
To be honest, I didn't mind the rabbit feasting on the weeds, etc., in my garden; I don't mind even if there are two. I think they are cute! But, I wouldn't want them to get struck down by a vehicle because they are hopping about on the road! Not to mention going into one of the neighboring yards where there are dogs! Come to think of it, the neighbors with the rabbits also have dogs! Maybe that's why the rabbits are in my yard - a safe haven from the dogs!
But, at least, they are not someone's lost pets. I know some of you who have read my earlier post about the rabbit had expressed concern that it might be a lost pet and worried that someone, perhaps a small child, would be sad about it.
On Sunday, I was grateful for:
- Doughnuts for brunch
- Finding out that the bunnies were not lost pets!
- A sunny, warm (87F) day
- Water for the garden
- Memories of my father (Sunday was his birthday)
Sunday's joyful activity was eating doughnuts! LOL!

Oh no, those pet bunnies need to be kept safe at home, but maybe they are preparing for their soon to be made deliveries of Easter treats (lol). Oh donuts ... not had one in over a year now, you tempt me to put on my grocery order, but would they be as fresh as your donuts!
ReplyDeleteYes, you'd think they'd keep their pet bunnies safe at home, instead of letting them roam freely, wouldn't you? Oops! Sorry I made you want doughnuts! If you do order some in your grocery order, I hope they will be as fresh as these were. :)
DeleteWith that many people living next door, the rabbits are probably the least of their worries. It's probably hard to keep track of all of the people, let alone the rabbits. That's too bad. I would hate to see them get hit by a car.
ReplyDeleteWhen they first moved in, there were 17 people living in a 3 bedroom, 1 bath house! Since then, they've converted the garage, added to the house, and brought in the two RVs. People constantly move in and out and I've lost count of how many are living there, now. I've had at least a couple of them ask me if I would rent out my garage, but, I've said no. I feel sorry for the little children of some of the families who live there and pretend not to notice when they ride their tricycles in my driveway or, occasionally, play ball in my front yard. But, I don't like their dogs using my yard (it's not like anyone picks up after them) or the adults blocking my driveway when they park, etc.

Oh my gosh. I'd be crazy about this. 17 people! I'm not suggesting you complain, I am just curious, are there zoning laws about how many people can live in a single family home? Maybe they've converted the zoning on the house to a multiple family residence. That's nuts though.

Yes, there are zoning laws and occupancy limits. I remember looking them up, at the time (and I looked it up, again, just now). But, they pertain mostly to rental units: 70-119 sq. feet - up to 2 persons; after that, it seems to go up by 49 additional sq. ft. per person, until, 470-520 sq.ft. for 10 persons. The occupancy chart ends there. My house, when I first bought it, was a bit under 1,100 sq. ft. Sufficient for about 20 persons, I guess (if 520 sq. ft. were enough for 10 persons). My garage, about 400 sq.ft., could be occupied by up to 8 people (although, it will require a kitchen and bathroom to qualify as a dwelling unit).
DeleteI no longer know how many people are living there, now, as people come and go. But, on a day to day basis, not a lot of noise. Often, there is some construction noise (they seem to be always building something!) and, sometimes, a loud radio, or, occasionally, singing. :) Right now, as I type this, I hear some drilling (maybe they are building a rabbit hutch?) and one of their dogs barking.
Oh! Donuts! I haven't had one in a year, I bet. Glad you solved the mystery of the owners of the bunnies. They don't sound like very good caretakers.

DeleteThank you; so far Tuesday morning has been off to a good start cleaning up after a certain cat! My bedroom floor has been cleaned and sanitized, the bathroom floor has been mopped, and a load of laundry done, thanks to him! :p
I've never heard of anyone letting their pet bunnies roam freely. I'd be afraid they would get run over by a car too! Enjoy those doughnuts while they last - unless of course they are already all gone lol.

I take it that the owners of the rabbits aren't too worried about whether any of their neighbours are bothered by the rabbits or whether the rabbits are causing any damage in neighbouring gardens. It seems rather irresponsible.
ReplyDeleteThe doughnuts are very tempting but, having cut out as much sugar as I can, I think they'd be too sweet for me now. It's very generous of your friends to share with you.
No, the owners of the rabbits don't seem to be worried, at all! But, then, again, these are the problem neighbors - the ones who block my driveway with their vehicles when they park, who let their dogs use my yard (and never pick up), who often discard their things in front of my house, etc. The lady who lives in the house behind them, often complains of their dogs (apparently the dogs have jumped over the wall and attacked her dog!) and their very loud music (DJ and amplifiers at 2:00 a.m. during the workweek, etc.). All the other neighbors on the block complain of them parking their cars and blocking their driveways, the trash left in their yards after a party, etc.

I laughed to see that there were more rabbits. They do have a reputation for multiplying and at first I wondered if you would end up with dozens in your yard! I hope they stay safe.
ReplyDeleteI had my first vaccine shot this morning and didn't feel a thing. So far no side effects and I was able to come back and change the bed and hang out the washed sheets. Good excuse to take it easy though, now that job is done.
Yes, apparently there are two and, knowing these neighbors, I doubt very much if the rabbits have been fixed! So, if they are a pair, then, I wonder when there will be lots of little bunnies hopping about! Eek! Rabbit stew, anyone?
DeleteHurray! You got your first dose! Oh, I do hope you won't get any side effects, but, do expect your arm to be sore later. They do say to drink plenty of water, afterwards. And yes, take this opportunity to rest and take it easy for a day or two. :)
I have a situation like that next door, too. Some people just allow their pets to roam freely...it's a lack of boundaries. The thing is, rabbits can decimate your garden. They ate all of my hollyhocks last year. (My favorite old fashioned flowers.) Living next door to some people isn't easy. Those donuts sound divine!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry that you, too, have neighbors who don't respect boundaries. As I've stated in some of my replies to comments above, these are the problem neighbors. Just about everyone on the block complains about them.

My daughter saw one of the rabbits in the back garden, last night. So, at least one of them is still around. But, yes, they should not be allowed to roam freely - several of my neighbors have dogs in their yards.
DeleteGlad you got to the bottom of the rabbit mystery, but it doesn't sound as if those neighbours are very responsible in the way they care for their animals, nor considerate of the rest of the neighbourhood. 17 people in a 3-bed house!! Why? Are they all legal? And properly registered? Sounds like a major social problem to me.
ReplyDeleteNo, they are not the best neighbors on the block! I really don't know their legal status, but, I assume one needs the proper documentation to be able to purchase a house. But, once it is purchased, who lives there is anyone's guess! There is a dire affordable housing shortage in Los Angeles and one really can't go anywhere without seeing homeless encampments.
