Another mostly sunny day with a high of 70F, today! I spent a relaxed morning, replying to blog comments and reading other blogs, etc.
In the afternoon, I practiced the piano and vacuumed. I made sure to take a couple of puffs of my inhaler and put on a dust mask before I vacuumed; I still needed to take a break between doing the living room/dining area/kitchen and the family room/bedrooms. But, the house has been vacuumed. I also sorted through one of the kitchen drawers and decluttered a couple of small items. I checked a couple of the lower kitchen cabinets, but, they are still tidy from when I cleaned the kitchen, late last summer, so I don't have to do them, this time around.
Today, I went through this week's grocery ads. In the days before Covid, I would make a list of the weekly deals at a couple of the stores I went to on a regular basis and stock up on those items, which was how I managed to keep my grocery budget at $75/month for myself. But, not now. These days, I just shop at the regular supermarket, one in a chain of supermarkets, because they offer free curbside pick up with purchases of $35 or more and pay their prices. Even so, I looked at the sales at the ethnic grocery store today and sighed - cucumbers are 5 for $1.00 (as opposed to $1 each at the supermarket), cauliflower priced at 3 lb/$.99 instead of $.99/lb. which is what I paid at the supermarket, and so on.
Later, I watched the evening news and crocheted. I have now joined six rows of 10 granny squares, each. I have eight more rows to join.
Today, I am grateful for:
- A sunny and warm day
- Availability of curbside pick up services at select grocery stores
- A gorgeous sunset (tried to take a photograph of it, but, I couldn't capture the colors with my cell phone)
- Having my daughter home
- Chatting with friend R
Today's joyful activity was crocheting.
Plans for tomorrow include more kitchen cleaning, piano practicing and paperwork.
How was your Wednesday? What are your plans for Thursday?
We had a very pretty sunset last night, also. With these short days and long nights it's easier to see both sunsets and sunrises this time of year.
ReplyDeleteI am afraid that I still don't wake up early enough to see the sunrises, but, I get to enjoy the sunsets, instead!
DeleteThe weather sounds so nice, it's still so cold here in Florida this week. I too miss shopping the deals at different stores and going to the ethnic markets. I still go in to do my shopping but just stick with the one store. It has to be more risky running into a bunch of different places. It works for now.
ReplyDeleteWe are having some nice, spring-like weather. Usually, February is one of the colder months for us. I guess higher grocery costs are the price we pay for being safe during this pandemic! I am grateful that the groceries are available in the first place and I can afford to pay the higher prices. I am very aware that not everyone can.
DeleteI've been looking at my budget and sighing loudly at how much more I am spending on food now I am relying on supermarket deliveries. I don't want to go shopping myself so will have to stick with it for now, and if I start buying fruit and veg from the local farm shop then the costs will increase even more. Rather that than risk going in store though.
ReplyDeleteI meant to ask on your previous post ... what are your new piano pieces please?
Yes, it is the price we pay for trying to stay safe! At least the services are available to us and we can manage the higher costs.
DeleteThe new pieces are the theme song from Godfather (a simplified arrangement by S) and one that made me think of you when I received it - Hedwig's Theme! My daughter pounced on it and started playing it right away! :D (She has a book of HP piano music, too).
I am with you on grocery buying. I will go into the store but I only go at off times and try to go only every other week and will only go to one store. It is painful to see the items I would normally cherry pick. Life in Covid times I guess.
ReplyDeleteYes, life in the time of Covid! I'm grateful, though, that there are still those who do all what is required to provide us with the groceries we need and we can pay for them.
DeleteI have a feeling it won't be long before we see a photo of your granny square blanket!
ReplyDeleteWe don't have much choice of stores, the general one has much better deals than the supermarket, which is part of a large chain that specializes in profit! The produce is mostly an outrageous price. I get annoyed when so many other items are 2 or 3 for a certain price or pay through the nose. Some of us only want one heavy jar at a time and I sometimes pass up on items that I might have bought spontaneously. That's not such a bad thing! Anyway, like many locals I favour the general department store over the supermarket.
Well, your feeling might be right! I have been trying to join one row a day, but, my hand started to cramp, today, so I didn't do any crocheting, today.
DeleteI remember reading some of the prices a Canadian blogger used to post and they always seemed a lot higher than what I paid, here. I'm glad you have the option of going to the general department store and hope you are able to buy most of what you need from them!
I mostly shop at one store and have a saver card there. I often save about 1/3 of the bill using it. There are often two for one deals on things. Groceries are expensive! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteI, too, use a store membership card at the supermarket I get my groceries from, Diana, and get a price reduction as a result. I used to go to the Red Owl (on University Avenue, I believe) when I was in Green Bay, but, I think you said it was no longer there?
DeleteI ate $1 bread and lots of potatoes and dhal during lockdown where I live - not the best, but as they say: "needs must". But when one is on a budget - yes it's the extra dollars that do add up.
ReplyDeleteBread and dhal is one of my favorite meals from my childhood! Yes, we do what we need to do when we have to, don't we? Keeps the body and soul together, as my mother used to say. (((HUGS)))
DeleteI'm looking forward to seeing your crochet. X
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jules. I hope to have it completed by the end of the month. :)
