Sunday

Lunch Sent by Neighbor

It poured with rain around 3:30 a.m., this morning (I had just gone to bed, but hadn't fallen asleep, yet), but, then, we had a break in the rain, which has been nice, because there is more rain in the forecast for the week ahead!  This morning, friend F called to see how I was doing and, later, neighbor T called for our Sunday chat.

Still later, neighbor S (my piano teacher) called to say her mother was making the fried tilapia that I like and she will bring me some for my lunch!  Shortly thereafter, her older daughter brought me two plates of food:  rice pilaf, cabbage slaw, fried tilapia fillets, and bread!  Yum!  Enough food for me for two meals!  I had some for lunch and again, for dinner!  And there's another piece of fish left for tomorrow's lunch or dinner!  At a time when people are stocking up on food and other supplies for themselves, these generous people are sharing their meal with me.  I am so blessed with good neighbors and friends!

In the evening, I called friend R to check on her and we chatted for a little bit.

I've taken it easy and relaxed, today.  I sewed up a neck warmer I had knitted, swept the bathroom and cleaned the litter box, took a walk around the garden and picked another orange, and watched the news.  Today, our governor asked people who are 65 and older to stay home for at least the next two weeks to minimize their risk of exposure to the virus.  I am not 65, yet, but, I suppose, with my pre-existing health conditions, I, too, should limit my going out and about.  Well, if it rains as much as the forecast says, then, I won't be tempted to go out, anyway!

Today, I am grateful for:
- Neighbor S sending me lunch (and dinner!)
- A break from the rain
- Fresh oranges from the garden
- Being able to keep in touch with friends through phone calls and emails
- Crocheted blankets

Today's joyful activity was walking around the garden and enjoying the fresh air and scent of lemon flowers.

Monday's To Do List:
- Change bed sheets
- Load of laundry (bed sheets/towels)
- Dust living room & dining area
- Clean the fridge
- Take trash cans to the curb for Tuesday trash pick up

How was your Sunday?  What are your plans for Monday?

  1. Nice friends!
I love hearing that people are still willing to share. There is a food drive in our neighborhood for foods for some of the school children who are on food plans at school. With no school some of those served wil have little to nothing to eat. The Girl Scouts in the neighborhood are asking everyone to contribute either food or money for food. I did not have a single item on the list of foods they are collecting, but I could give them cash for what they need.

    1. They are nice friends, aren't they?

I am glad you are able to contribute some cash towards the food drive, Anne. I believe our school district is making arrangements to have some community centers set up to provide the meals to the students on the school lunch program. But, I don't know how the children are supposed to get to those centers...

  2. There are so many generous folks & we give thanks for them. Our little village is the quietest I'm seen in years, no one is out & about other than people walking or a few in the park. I'm not sure why many are not getting this social distancing requirement & just insist doing what "THEY" want to do. You may not get the virus or really bad symptoms but what about those about you? This disease is showing to have no favourites. The worry for those over 65 & comprised immune systems is that you need a really robust immune system to fight this virus. Staying home for 2 weeks to ensure my neighbours, my friends, my family are safe, I can do.

    1. Yes, some people are very kind and generous, aren't they?

Some people aren't quite ready to believe that they need to distance themselves from other people for various reasons, I guess. Maybe they don't believe that this is as serious a threat to public health as we are being told it is by some people. Others maintain that they are free and independent and won't have others tell them what they should or should not do. For some, denial is a coping mechanism. I am just grateful that I am able to stay home for the most part (although I did go shopping a couple of times, last week).

    1. It really was a very tasty meal, Natalia (especially since I didn't have to cook it!)

  4. How kind of your neighbour to send round the food you like. Sometimes I think that the thoughtfulness is even more beneficial than the actual gift, for lifting the spirits.
I think we are all mentally trying to adjust to the unknown future. Of course the future for each one of us is unknown anyway but this is the communal future that is at stake. I note the different attitudes. We've gotten off lightly so far in Canada but that could change rapidly. Some people think precautions are going too far. Have they not noticed what has happened in Italy?
I thought about shopping for a few extra items today and then hunkering down for a prolonged exile, but then it occurred to me that I might just as well wait, since we are not going to starve in the near future on what we already have.

    1. It really was a very kind and thoughtful thing to do, wasn't it?

We really are not ready to handle a medical crisis of a magnitude that this has the potential to be, no matter however much we would like to think we are. It really is a matter of numbers - there are only a given number of hospital beds and health care workers and if more of us get sick at one time than the number of available hospital beds, then, we overwhelm the system.

Yes, it is best to stay home for the next couple of weeks and make do with what we already have on hand. I might have to go out once to drop off my tax papers, but, I need to call the tax accountant office to see if they are open! Should do that, today.

  5. What a lovely gesture to prepare and deliver all that yummy food. You have wonderful and caring friends.

I am ready to stay at home. I have enough to eat and enough prescription medicines and lots to keep me happy and amused. I have been talking with two of my kids today and hope to hear soon from my third. Everyone is well, staying home and staying safe. I cannot believe how much has changed in one week.

    1. It really was very kind and generous of them, wasn't it? Plus, that cabbage slaw reminded me that cabbage stays fresh in the fridge for a long time, so, today, I picked up a cabbage as well as a head of lettuce when I went out. I'll eat the lettuce now and keep the baggage for later. :)

I'm glad you are prepared to stay home for the next two weeks and your children are, too (hopefully you heard from middle son and that's what he's planning to do, too). It's good that we have home improvement projects and crafts to keep us fully occupied while we stay at home, isn't it? :) Will your sister still be able to visit for craft afternoons or are you now self-isolating?

  6. I too feel lucky that I'm retired making it easy to stay home.

I was thinking like Bushlady today - that I'd just run out to pick up a couple of things and then I realized I need to change my thinking.
I didn't really need any of the things on my list.

Its an adjustment of habits for me as much as anything.

We need to do all that we can for everyone's health as well as our own.

    1. It's hard to get out of that mind set of running to the store for a couple of things, isn't it? When I was going through chemo, my daughter begged me to stay home and away from the public. I went to the clinic for my treatments and follow up immune booster shots, etc., but, would then, come home, directly. I didn't go grocery shopping or out to lunch or anything. I would always think how nice it would be if I could just go to the store for some bread, or to buy some kitchen towels, browse in the fabric store, etc. But, my daughter was terrified that I'd catch a cold or something, so, I stayed home!

Today, I needed to go out to drop off my tax papers and, on the way home, I did stop by the grocery store for a couple more items I had wanted. I debated long and hard, but, I gambled that it would be OK. I hope I did the right thing!

    1. It was very kind and generous of her. I had the rice and the cabbage and some of the fish for two meals. I still have the second piece of fish and plan to have it with salad or some steamed vegetables, for my dinner, tonight.
