Shopping the After Christmas Sales

Snow-capped Mountains in the Distance

Last night's storm, which brought us rain, had brought snow to the mountains; my daughter took these pictures of the snowy mountains in the distance while we were stopped at a traffic light, this afternoon.

More Snow-capped Mountains

Today, my daughter and I went to the mall to do some after Christmas sales shopping!

My daughter was anxious to get me a Christmas present.  Every time we went shopping before Christmas, she would tell me to let her know if I saw anything I liked - a blouse or a sweater or something.  But, I didn't see anything I liked.

What I really wanted were some scented body lotions and perfume as I had come to the end of my bottle of lotion and my perfume.  Although my daughter had wanted to buy me some lotion from our favorite bath and beauty products store prior to Christmas, when lotions were on sale for "buy 3, get 2 free", I had refused to allow her to buy me any as that would still come to $7.50-$8.10 per bottle (regular price was $12.50-$13.50, depending on the scent).  Today, however, the store was having their semi-annual sale, with up to 75% off selected bath and body products and they had sent me a coupon of an additional 20% off any purchase of $25 or more!  My daughter bought 10 bottles of lotion, some for me and some to be given as gifts to family as part of their New Year's gifts.  With the discount, the lotions came to $2.49-$2.79 each, depending on the original price.  I now have at least a year's supply of lotions!

Then, we went to another store for some perfume.  I no longer wear perfume on a daily basis, but, I do like to wear some when I go out, even if it is grocery shopping.  I wanted something light for daytime wear.  I picked something with a green tea scent - a perfume and lotion set.  Unbeknownst to me, my daughter also picked out another bottle of perfume that I had said was good, but had put back on the counter; she hid it from me until we got to the check out counter and then, insisted on buying that one as well!

Then, on the way out of the store, I saw some jigsaw puzzles.  The Christmas themed ones were on sale for $2.99 each and I really wanted one.  Daughter bought me two as part of her Christmas gifts to me!

She also bought a gift for one of her friends and a bento box and some costume jewelry for herself, using a gift card she had received.

After that, we came home, feeling well pleased with our afternoon of shopping!

Daughter has a bit of a scratchy sore throat, so I made her some coriander tea.  I hope she isn't coming down with whatever it was that I had!

Today, I am grateful for:
- A partly sunny day after yesterday's rain
- Being able to see the snow on the mountains in the distance
- After Christmas sales!
- Bargain holiday shopping
- Christmas gifts from my daughter

How was your Thursday?  Do you shop for gifts during the after Christmas sales?

  3. Wow, great bargains! I love those snow covered mountains. If you don't mind me asking, what state do you live in? After a mild spell we have it cold here, in the teens this morning and are awaiting a wintry mix of ugly weather later in the day. Thankfully I have no place I have to go so will continue to crochet and read. The snowmen puzzle looks like it will be a challenge.☺

    1. Thank you, Susan, I love bargains! :D I live in southern California. Our winters are rather mild, but, we do get snow in the upper elevations, just not where I live. :) I hope your weather doesn't get too ugly! I'm glad you'll be able to stay indoors and crochet and read. Happy New Year to you, your mother, and loved ones.

Best of luck with the jigsaws - they look tricky. X

  5. Sounds like a fun day of shopping. It's always satisfying to shop and find things you want for a good price.

I went out and got some wrapping paper since we were almost out. It wasn't too crowded, but I stayed out of other stores just the same.

    1. I like to find bargains; I feel like I got good value for my money!

Now is the time to stock up on holiday wrapping paper and such. I have paper, but, I need to stock up on bows and gift tags (unless I decide to make some using old Christmas cards). And, if I find some gift bags on clearance, I might get some, as I used up all the gift bags that I had.

  8. Your photos remind me of when we lived in Northern Italy for nearly a year and when it rained the mountains in the distance would be covered in snow, just the same!
I do hope your daughter stays healthy.
DS and family went down to the river and came back with a chunk of beautiful clear ice to show me. We have had another day together and now they are safely home. Time to kick back and relax!

    1. I love to see the snow on the mountains. :)

Thank you; she is definitely having a sore throat. I gave her fresh oranges from the tree, this morning, for the vitamin C and cough drops. She still insisted on going out to dinner with her friends, today - it's their annual holiday get together, that they've been doing since they were in high school! It started as a pot luck lunch among the five best friends while still at school, then, when they all graduated and went off to college, it was a pot luck lunch held at my house, usually. Now that they are all working, however, they've decided to go out to dinner, instead. It's nice to see them mature and become adults.

I'm glad you had another day with your DS and family and that they are now safely back home and you get to relax.

Hope you have a very happy New Year, Bushlady. May it be a very good year for all of us.

  9. Your daughter treated you to some lovely gifts, Bless.
And what a deal on the lotions.

I went out the morning after Christmas to get a bit of wrapping paper, cards and a few gift bags all marked 50% off. (and some Christmas candy too :)

Years ago I stocked up on so much Christmas paper on sale that it's been years since I've needed to buy any.
On one hand that's been nice but honestly I've missed getting a couple new rolls every year.
I've grown so tired of the same paper every year!
I've learned my lesson and only got one small pack.

There will always be another sale.

    1. She did get me some nice (and wanted) gifts. I think we did great on the lotions!

I'm glad you got just enough of the wrapping paper, this year! I've done the same as you and I think I still have some paper I bought back when my mother was alive (and she's been dead for almost 14 years, now!) LOL. As you say, I do get tired of the same paper! I haven't been able to find any gift bags on clearance, yet, this year.

  10. Wow, it sounds like you scored some great deals and even better that they were gifts. I do like to shop the after Christmas sales, but my rule of thumb is to wait until after school starts back up, so that will be Jan. 6. I really don't need anything else this year - I was quite the shopper before Christmas picking up a few things I wanted for around the house. I didn't get around to wish you a merry Christmas so I hope your New Year is doubly splendid.

    1. Thank you, Susanne, for the combined Christmas and New Year wishes. :)

I am very happy with the bargains we got! Some years, I've waited until after the New Year to shop for bargains, as, sometimes, I find holiday items on 90% off sales then, but, in more recent years, I've found that the shops have cleared all their holiday merchandise by the end of the year and there's nothing remaining after the new year. In fact, some stores were already setting out their St. Valentine's Day items, when I went shopping right after Christmas!

I wish you and yours a very happy New Year and look forward to seeing more of your lovely cards and scrapbooking pages in the coming year. :)
