Eventful Tuesday

9/3 Groceries
I went to bed at 2:00 a.m., last night/this morning, but I couldn't fall asleep right away.  I think it was closer to 3:00 a.m., when I finally fell asleep.  Then, when the alarm went off at 8:00 a.m., I couldn't wake up.  Well, actually, I woke up, but, went back to sleep!  I had set the alarm for 8:00 a.m. because I wanted to have plenty of time to take the car to have the tires checked and still make it to the doctor's appointment.  But, because I slept till almost 9:00 a.m., I decided to call and reschedule the doctor's appointment.  They were very nice about it and rescheduled the appointment for Thursday afternoon, instead.

That gave me enough time to have a cup of tea before I took the car to a nearby service garage to have the tires checked.  They checked the tire pressure and added some much needed air!

After that, I went to the Armenian grocery store and did some grocery shopping.  I bought:

-1 lb. beef shoulder steaks @$2.99/lb = $3.23
2 lb. ground beef @ $1.99/lb = $4.09
1 cabbage @ 3lb/$1.00 = $.53
2 zucchini @$.39/lb = $.28
Okra @$1.49/lb = $.34
Serrano chilies @$.79/lb = $.09
White potatoes @ $.39/lb = $.37
3 Oranges @$.49/lb = $.84
3 Nectarines @ $.79/lb = $.75
Grapes @ $.99/lb = $1.27
Total = $11.79

9/3 Receipt

My September grocery budget will be $75, even though my daughter will be coming home this weekend.

September grocery budget = $75
Spent to date = $11.79
Balance left in budget = $75 - $11.79 = $63.21

A very friendly lady chatted to me while we both selected zucchini.  She started out telling me to choose the smaller ones as they were better and asked me where I was from.  Then, when I told her, she told me that she has just returned from a trip around the world because she met me!  LOL!  Apparently, she's a musician, plays piano, guitar, and mandolin, but, all by ear because she can't read music.  I enjoyed talking with her.

When I came home and collected the mail, I found three pieces of mail from the Auto Club.  One was a questionnaire for additional information prior to renewal of my home insurance, asking if I had made any changes, etc., which is a routine thing; I filled it out, right away, and have it ready to be mailed, tomorrow.  One was a confirmation of the changes I made to the car insurance policy, last Tuesday (August 27) and expected; I had received a computer print out of the changes I made at the time, but, I was told that the official confirmation would come in the mail.

The third piece of mail, however, was a "Notice of Non-renewal and Termination of Insurance", dated August 30! Say WHAT?!!!  According to the letter, they were not going to renew my car insurance after the current policy expires because I had not submitted the changes that were required!  Excuse me?   I made the changes in person at the branch of the Auto Club near me on the 27th of August, three days before the date on the letter, and I have just received the official confirmation letter, in today's mail, in addition to the computer print out!  I had also, at the time of making the changes, asked the agent helping me if the information could be sent to the agent who had contacted me, earlier, about it, and I had been assured that a notification will be sent to her!  Oh, I was so upset!  I called the number of the agent listed on the letter (I've spoken with her at least twice before about this), and left her a message detailing all what I've done.  She called me back within the hour, stating that she had not been aware that I had filled out the forms and made the changes and to disregard the non-renewal/termination letter, she will be mailing me the renewal papers, and they should reach me by the end of the week or early next week.  Well, they had better!  If not, I shall be calling the Vice President of Member Services, who had signed the policy changes confirmation, and asking if this is how they treat a member of 32 years standing!  I've half a mind to say, "Forget it!" and go with another insurance company!  Except, I don't like change.

I ate a nectarine while I was waiting for the insurance agent to call me back as I hadn't had any breakfast, but wasn't hungry for lunch.  Then, after she called back and the matter was settled, I got very hungry!  LOL!  I quickly cooked the beef steaks I had bought, fried up some of the potatoes, boiled some frozen corn and had lunch!

Later in the evening, after a cup of tea, and an early dinner of more of the steak and potatoes I made earlier, I went for my walk.  I walked for 30 minutes, this time.  On the way back, just two houses away from my house, I got bitten by that neighbor's dog!

Inside Wrist
Outside on the Wrist

There were two small dogs, actually.  I was on the sidewalk, just approaching their house; the gentleman of the house and a family member were standing by the open front door and the gate was open.  The dogs saw me walking and ran out!  Both jumped on me and one bit my hand!  I have slight scratch marks on both legs (fortunately, my skirt protected my legs) and the bite marks on my right hand.  The lady of the house came rushing out and insisted that I came inside where she wiped the bites with disinfectant and applied some antibiotic ointment and bandaids.  She felt very badly about it, telling me she didn't know how the dogs got out.  Well, they got out because her husband and son-in-law had the front door and gate open!  She asked me if I needed to go to the doctor and I said no.  The two bite marks on the outside of the wrist aren't deep, but the one inside is a puncture wound and it hurts a bit.  I put another bandaid on it after I came home as the one she applied came off (probably due to the ointment we applied).  I told her that it was a good thing that it was me and not someone else, because anyone else might have made a fuss.  I am very grateful it wasn't anything worse!

Much later, when I was video chatting with my daughter, she said something that upset me.  Usually, she texts me in the morning to wish me a good morning.  Today, I texted her about rescheduling my doctor's appointment, before she texted me, and I sent about three short texts instead of one long one.  Apparently she was sleeping and the sound of  my texts arriving on her phone disturbed her and annoyed her.  That upset me.  Not only did I get bitten by a dog, today, I annoyed my daughter, too.  Sigh.  Maybe I didn't start off the month on the right foot, after all.

Today, I am grateful for:
- The doctor's appointment was rescheduled without any difficulty
- The dog bites weren't worse than they are
- The car insurance will be renewed, after all
- Friendly people at the grocery store
- I was able to get the car tires checked

I think I'll take it easy, tomorrow.

Earlier, I posted a photo of a mystery grocery item.  Eileen guessed correctly!

Fresh Pistachios!

    1. Thank you, Angela. Each day, I ask for a grateful heart and a portion of Grace. I always wonder, when these things happen, if I am being tested to see how gracefully (or not) I handle them. Often, I fail, miserably, which keeps me humble.

  2. It sounds like you've had a bit of an off day so you need some pampering time to turn that around. Dog bites, even relatively minor ones like that, can be nasty so I hope it clears up for you without any trouble and I hope your neighbour learns to keep them under control in the future.

    1. Yes, it was a bit of a trying day. The bites on the outside of the wrist have almost healed. The one on the inside of the wrist was deeper, I think, and still hurts a bit. I put more antibacterial ointment on it, this morning. There is no redness to indicate any infection, so, I am hopeful it heals without any problems.

  3. Bless, have you had a tetanus shot recently? If not, please see your doctor. I hope the dog is vaccinated.
That dog owner is very irresponsible.
I don’t even trust dog owners who say their dog is friendly.

    1. I am not quite sure when I had my last tetanus shot, but I th ink it was within the last 10 years. The owner said the dog was vaccinated. The bite on the inside of the wrist is deeper and is still hurting a little, especially as it is right where I bend my hand, but there is no redness to indicate any infection, so, hopefully, it will heal in time.

  4. Sending lots of hugs. It must have been a shock with the dogs. She is lucky that you were the victim. What if it had been a child? More hugs.

You seem to have had a really tough day, I hope it gets better. Sending good vibes with extra hugs x

    1. Thank you, Lyssa. Yes, it was a bit of a shock. I am just thankful that it wasn't anything worse than it was! I just noticed, earlier this morning, that there was a small bite on my right index finger, as well! Now that could have been a close call!

Thank you for the hugs. :)

  5. Gosh, that was an eventful day! I hope tomorrow is positively dull by comparison.
Your wrist must be so sore. Dog bites can be very nasty and I dread to think how it could have turned out if it had been a child walking past. Maybe it will make the neighbours think very carefully before they leave the gate open in future and I hope your wrist heals quickly.
I'm sure your daughter didn't mean to upset you. Maybe she was a little tired and spoke without thinking.
Sending good wishes that tomorrow is a much better day for you. Xx

    1. Thank you, Jules. Yes, I am very glad that it wasn't a small child who got bitten! The neighbors were very concerned and shocked, themselves; they are usually very good about keeping their doors and gate closed.

No, my daughter didn't mean to upset me. She texted me, later in the night, apologizing and trying to explain that she was more or less laughing at herself for wanting that extra 15 mins. of sleep - apparently, she had insomnia the night before and couldn't fall asleep until 6:00 a.m., and wasn't so happy about being woken up before her alarm went off! I guess I was feeling a bit oversensitive and took her words the wrong way. We both apologized to each other before we went to sleep.

  6. That was an eventful day--and not in a good way. When you go to the doctor mention your dog bites just in case they like to give antibiotics routinely with that kind of thing. And it was a good thing that you rescheduled your appointment so that you were home to deal with the insurance mixups. It all sounds very frustrating to deal with.

I'm sorry that your daughter was annoyed with your texts, but she may have been in an important meeting or something similar. But, also, it shows us that she is a normal person who occasionally is not perfect. But I think she must be pretty close to it from what you've shared about her. You are very lucky to have such a close relationship.

    1. I've had better days, but, it's all past now. As I mentioned in my response to Angela, above, I ask for a grateful heart and a portion of Grace, each day; sometimes, I think these things happen just to test how gracefully (or not) I handle them! Equanimity is considered a virtue in my religion - the ability to deal with the ups and downs equally well. Obviously, I am not quite there yet, as these types of things tend to get to me. But, I try!

The bites seem to be healing well. The one on the inside of the wrist is deeper and still hurts a bit. But, there is no redness,. I slept with the bandaid, but, I removed it, this morning and put more ointment on it; I am leaving it open, without a bandaid, for now.

Thank you. My daughter was sorry, too. She texted me, later in the night, apologizing. Apparently, she had insomnia (she's another night owl like me) and couldn't fall asleep until 6:00 a.m. yesterday morning! So, she wasn't happy that my texting her repeatedly woke her up before her alarm went off! Had she said something about it, earlier in the day, I wouldn't have been upset. But, her saying she got annoyed with me texting her, after what had been a rather eventful day, was the proverbial last straw. I was feeling ultra sensitive, by that time, and her comment upset me. She texted that she was laughing at herself for wanting a few extra minutes of sleep, but, maybe she should have worded it another way. Skype had frozen by that time, so we couldn't see each others faces to read clues and she says that's why she hates to talk on the phone, etc., and prefers to talk face to face. She apologized for upsetting me and I apologized for getting upset and we both said, "I love you" and goodnight. :) We do have a close relationship. I am blessed to have a daughter like her. In our relationship, I tend to be the moodier one, quick to take offense where none is intended.

  7. I was bitten by a dog (on a leash) while out for a walk a few months ago - I didn't realize that it had broken the skin so I just quickly walked away (was wearing long pants) and never even thought to ask if the dog was up on its rabies shots! I hope you heal quickly!

    1. Oh, that must have been a shock to be attacked by a dog on a leash! I hope your wounds healed! Actually, I didn't think to ask about the vaccinations, either! The neighbor volunteered that information. I think I was in a bit of a shock and not thinking too clearly!

  8. I'm grumpy when I'm woken up too. I'm sure your DD meant no disrespect. Keep a close eye on the dog bits and make sure they don't get infected.

    1. Yes, my daughter is not a morning person! She texted me, later, and apologized, explaining that she had not fallen asleep until 6:00 a.m. and that's why she wasn't happy to be woken up before her alarm went off. I was just being overly sensitive. We "kissed and made up", in a manner of speaking.

Yes, the bites seem to be healing OK. The one on the inside of the wrist is a bit painful, but, I think it will be OK.

  13. I get angry when I hear about anyone being bitten by a dog. I don't hate dogs, in fact there are one or two that I quite like because I know them, but over the years I have heard too many tales of people getting bitten. They are animals, for heaven's sake, and shouldn't be allowed to be at loose. I am really bothered by photos of large dogs with their heads next to wee children! I once read the following: "“An animal is always safe until it’s not.” - Rob Laidlaw of Zoocheck"

So I hope you will recover quickly from this unpleasant attack and that the owners will be more careful in future. At least they were concerned for your wounds.

I often wonder when I hear about anyone getting woken by their phone. Isn't it possible to put it on silent or hang it out of the window or stuff it under the mattress? 😀

Yes, daughter sometimes puts her phone on silent, but, not too often. I just need to wait until she texts me, first, unless it is an emergency!

  14. Reading through the comments, it seems you are healing fine but what an alarming thing to have happen out of the blue. Just walking a long and Pow! You're bitten by a dog.
I'm sure you were pretty shaken by the whole thing. I know I would've been.
    Glad you're ok

    1. I am healing well, thank you, Debra, although I have a couple of purple bruises on my legs from where the dogs clawed me! It was a bit of a shock, although I heard the dogs barking and stopped walking when I saw them running towards me. But, I certainly wasn't expecting them to attack me! I am just grateful that it wasn't worse.
