I got to aunt's house around 1:30 p.m. Her caregiver had made lunch (rice, beef curry, green beans, and dhal), and they both insisted that I ate some lunch. Later in the afternoon, cousin P and her daughter joined us, so aunt was happy because she had company.
On my way home from aunt's, I stopped at an Indian grocery store, which was also a small restaurant, as well. I went off my low carb diet, today, and bought two samosas ($1 each) for dinner:
Samosas and Mint Chutney |
Frozen Grated Coconut and Kheer Mix |
Coconut Milk |
My bill came to $14.94 with tax, of which $3.96 was for groceries (the cans of coconut milk); the rest is from the household budget (dipping into the March household budget to pay for what I bought, today).
Dollar Store Receipt |
Finally, I stopped at the grocery store and bought:
2 pineapples $.99@ = $1.98
1 loaf of bread = $1.99
1 bottle of salad dressing = $2.19
1 container of yogurt = $2.50 (the dollar store didn't have the big containers of yogurt, today)
Total = $8.66
Other Groceries |
I also bought a 16 lb. bag of cat food, which was $9.99 plus tax (not included in the grocery budget).
Grocery Store Receipt |
Today's grocery spending:
$3.99 + $3.96 + $8.66 = $16.61
February grocery budget = $75 + $5.55 from January = $80.55
Spent to date: $5.00 + $7.80 + $10.51 + $9.30 + $29.04 + $16.61 = $78.26
Balance remaining in February grocery budget: $80.55 - $78.26 = $2.29
I need to buy half a gallon of milk ($1.99), on Thursday, before my daughter comes home. There's just enough left in the budget for that! Ha, ha. I don't quite know why I didn't want to buy the milk, today, but, I can buy it Thursday afternoon. I will probably buy a dozen eggs, then, as well (with the March grocery budget, as eggs are on sale for $1.49/doz. this week).
There were several pineapple tops that had been broken off and kept by the side of the bin with the pineapples, and I picked them up and brought home with me! So far, I have managed to root one pineapple top (I haven't planted it, yet) and I am hoping that these will root, too! If they do, I might have the beginnings of my own pineapple plantation going, just like Nathalie at the ImperfectlyFrugally blog did (she has since closed her blog, so I am not providing a link to it, here; but she had several pineapple plants growing in her backyard).
Pineapple Tops |
After I came home and photographed and put away the groceries, I ate my samosas and had a cup of tea. Later, I did the dishes, chatted on the phone with Aunt C and friend R, texted with cousin N, and video chatted with my daughter.
Today, I am grateful for:
- Being able to visit Aunt T
- A safe drive there and back
- Treats from the Indian store
- Phone calls with family and friends
- Cousin N assuring me that she is able to drive me home from the eye doctor's appointment in March (I will have my eyes dilated and I will not be allowed to drive myself back).
Wednesday's To Do List:
- Tidy the house!
- Clean the bathrooms
- Water the indoor plants
How was your Tuesday? How did you do with your grocery shopping this month?
I especially look forward to your pineapple plantation now that I don't see Nathalie's any more.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Live and Learn. I miss her blog. But, I hope to have a pineapple or two growing in the garden, myself. And a celery - I got one to root!
DeleteWhat a lovely day you had. And wonderful also for your aunt who enjoyed an afternoon with lots of company. If you are going off your diet for those samosas, who could blame you? On one of my trips out to Vancouver, my son stopped at this little whole in the wall to pick up a bag of those same samosas. Whenever he was driving by this area, he would buy them from this place. They tasted like a little piece of heaven on earth. Yum.
ReplyDeleteWell done with the February budget.....almost to the penny. As you know, I was not quite so successful. I did borrow from my savings to get through the month (but have since paid it back). I am pretty sure I can make it up this month.
Yes, I remember Nathalie's pineapple plantation. *laugh* I wonder if it is still going strong. It would be great if you could grow one, but I imagine it would take a lot of watering. I'm wishing you luck.
It was a lovely day, Susan. I'm glad I was able to visit this aunt. She's in her 90s and still sharp as a tack, but, getting physically frail. All she wants now is company and lots of it!
DeleteSamosas are addictive, aren't they? They are not something I normally make, so, I like to buy them from time to time.
Yes, the February budget worked out practically to the penny!
Well done in paying back what you borrowed from savings. March will be a good month, I think. :)
I hope Nathalie is doing well. I miss reading her blog.
Pineapples are a type of bromeliad, so, not too much watering, once established. My mother used to grow them, but then, she could grow practically anything! I always joke that my mother could plant a dead stick and get a healthy plant to grow from it, while I, on the other hand, can plant a healthy plant and end up with a dead stick! LOL!
I didn't know you could grow pineapple plants from the tops. You learn something new every day! I hope you can get your pineapple garden established ... although I will be jealous!
ReplyDeleteThe tops of the pineapples can be rooted (either in water, or in soil) and they will grow to form pineapple plants. Whether they'll grow well enough to form new pineapples will depend on a lot of different factors, but, it'll be fun trying. :)
DeleteNice shopping spree you had there! I went off the rails a little more than I wanted to this month when I bought a couple of Porterhouse steaks to have as a Valentine celebration with Son2 and DIL2, but I am ok with it, since it was a celebration. It will be interesting to see how March plays out.
ReplyDeleteThose celebrations are what makes it all worth while, aren't they? I'm glad you were able to celebrate a special occasion with your family. I know I will be spending a little extra this weekend, with my daughter coming down and us celebrating her birthday, but, it's all good. :)
DeleteI hope your pineapple tops will grow well, Bless. A long time ago I was able to grow one and even got a small pineapple from it.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Nil. I shall put them in water to root and we shall see what happens. :)
DeleteHow exciting that you were able to get a small pineapple from the plant you grew! I think your climate is more suitable for pineapple growing than ours, here; the blogger I mentioned, Nathalie, also lived in Florida.
Hi Bless, You always sound so cheerful and happy. I still need to total up what I spent on groceries this month. I think I stayed within my budget. I usually do. (as long as I stick to a list and buy what's on sale.) I've been making homemade pizza and bread again, which saves money.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Stephenie! I have my moments when I become "negative" as my daughter puts it, but, for the most part, I am cheerful and happy. :)
DeleteI'm sure you did well with your grocery budget, this month. There are some months when I go over budget; when that happens, I try to make it up in the next month. I'm glad I have the option of doing that. :)
