Doughnuts or Donuts?

Chocolate Doughnut
Today is June 1st and it is National Doughnuts/Donuts Day!

This is what greeted me at the office, when I went in, this morning:

Not one, but, two, boxes of doughnuts!
There were, perhaps six or seven people in the office, today and there were two doughnuts left, when I left the office in the evening!  I admit to eating the chocolate one I pictured at the top!

By the way, I prefer to spell it as "doughnuts"; but, I guess "donuts" is the more modern spelling?

Lunch was a little more nutritious:

Lunch
Lettuce salad (two types of lettuce, strawberries, a little bacon crumbled, dressing), tuna salad, crackers, and a container of diced mango in light syrup.  Since a "serving" of crackers was five crackers according to the box, that's what I ate, with the tuna salad.  A fresh mango would have been better, I know, but I didn't have time to cut up one, this morning, as I "slept in" till 7:30 a.m. (after going to sleep at 3:00 a.m.) and made the salads in the morning.

I had a very productive day at the office as I accomplished a lot more than I thought I would be able to.

On the way home, I stopped at one of the shopping malls to buy a bridal shower gift.  When I asked my cousin V for a gift suggestion for her future daughter-in-law, cousin V suggested getting something from the wedding gift registry.  I thought that was the best solution, since I don't know the bride that well to get her a more intimate gift.  Since the bridal shower is scheduled for tomorrow evening, I needed to get a gift as soon as possible!  I looked through the gift registry and decided on the set of 16 glasses and a glass mixing bowl that had been requested.  I had hoped to buy them and take to the shower, in person, but, the items had to be ordered, I was told, and will be shipped directly to the address on file.  But the store gave me a little card to notify the bride-to-be that a gift had been purchased.  I will include that in the card I plan to make!

By the time I made my purchase and drove home, however, it was almost 7:00 p.m. and too late to go to the meditation session!  I would have had to rush without having any tea and I would still have been at least 15 minutes late.  It would have been OK, but the meditation would have started and I might disturb the others.  I decided I will skip today's session.  Instead, I had a cup of tea and relaxed.  A short time later, my aunt C called and I had a nice chat with her.

Dinner was leftover Spanish rice with some ground beef mixed into it - it was a serving suggestion on the packet of the Spanish rice mix, but they added cheese and called it "nacho rice"; I skipped the cheese, since I am not that much of a fan of cheese:

Rice and Ground Beef
I probably should have added vegetables to it, but I didn't!

Daughter, in the meantime, went to acrobatics classes, today!  After the class, she stayed for an open gym type session where she learned to do several partnered positions, where you balance on the feet (and, sometimes, hands) of a partner who is lying down: "the bird", to "the throne" from which she "cannon balled" into a "candlestick" and "star" and one other position she couldn't remember the name of.  She didn't have any pictures of herself doing these positions, but she sent me pictures illustrating these positions that she found online so I could see what she was describing.  She said she had a lot of fun and would have liked to have stayed later, but made herself leave at 9:00 p.m. because she knew I'd get worried if she stayed out later!  Later, we video chatted.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Free doughnuts at the office!
- A sunny day
- A productive day at the office
- Being able to get the bridal shower gift
- Daughter having fun at her acrobatics class

How was your day?  Did you celebrate National Doughnuts Day?  How do you prefer to spell doughnuts/donuts?

  2. You have a very considerate daughter who was paying attention to the time so you wouldn't worry. I didn't celebrate doughnut day. While I like donuts, I can take them or leave them. I'm glad no one tempted me.

    1. Yes, it was very considerate of her! I really don't like her traveling by bus when it is late at night (or dark), unless she really needed to (such as when she took an evening class). It might be quite safe, but I feel like it is taking an unnecessary risk.

When I was undergoing treatments, I lost my taste for doughnuts, but now, my taste buds are back and a doughnut tastes quite good, unfortunately!

  3. Good idea to get the shower gift from the bridal registry, although it must have been a little frustrating not to have the actual gift to take with you. Nonetheless, she will be very appreciative. The fact that you intend to make the card for her shower did not go by unnoticed by me. Good for you. It will be wonderful if you could take a picture of it before you give it away.

P.S. I have not had a doughnut in a very long time.

    1. Susan, I think you are showing amazing will power with your new diet. Well done!

I made the card, late last night. And I took a picture of it! It is something I had seen online, but I modified it very slightly. I had fun making it and I used what I had on hand, so it worked out well, I think.

  4. I have to admit I'm not a great fan of American doughnuts. I don't mind one that son picks me up sometimes. It's a banana one lol. I always thought donuts was the American spelling of the word. Have a great weekend!

    1. I've read that doughnut was the original spelling and donut was an abbreviation. American doughnuts are the only ones I know of, although, my favorite type is known as a French cruller.

  5. I would probably write it as doughnuts, but however you spell it they taste delicious! I'm not surprised there were only two left.
How does a Bridal shower work. If you get a gift for the shower do you also need to buy a gift for the actual wedding? X

    1. The bridal shower is usually given by a family member or friend of the bride and is usually attended by only females. The bride-to-be is given gifts of household items and/or lingerie. Some people compile a set of favorite family recipes to give the bride. I think, the original purpose was to help the bride set up house! Often, they are held in the afternoons and a light lunch or a tea-type meal is served and games are played. This is an American custom, I believe, because we didn't have bridal showers or baby showers when I was in Sri Lanka (things might have changed by now). And, yes, a wedding gift is also expected, in addition to the bridal shower gift. :)

  6. Donuts are my downfall! I try to walk past them. I love them so much. (I'm recreating this because my first comment didn't go through). Your food looks good! Spanish rice and meat...a good idea. Wedding registries are fun to look at. Andrea

    1. Andrea, I'm sorry you keep experiencing problems with posting comments on my blog. I do thank you for trying until it does go through! I live within walking distance (3 blocks) of two doughnut shops! It's a good thing I approach my house from the opposite direction so I don't actually pass them on my way home! But, quite often, I am tempted to drive those additional 3 blocks, past my house, to buy a doughnut, after work!

    2. Oh I don't mind...it's just a "disclaimer" sort of; if my first comment ever makes it I assure you my memory wouldn't have re-created it correctly...ha.. I think I would weigh less if it weren't for donuts. Andrea

  7. I had never heard of National Doughnuts Day until I read in our local paper that the supermarket was ordering in Paczki for the occasion. I believe they are a Polish kind of doughnut, usually available in the store before Lent and they are delicious so I just had to buy a box of 4.

    1. I just read up on Paczki! The article said they were similar to our jelly and other filled doughnuts. They sound delicious!

  8. I'd write doughnut - I don't like the donut spelling at all!

Spanish rice sounds interesting. Is it spicy?

    1. I'd say it was more flavorful than spicy, but, then, I am used to very spicy food. The rice is cooked with tomatoes and bell peppers, although I made it with a mix, this time.

  9. I'm not sure whether we had national do-nut day in the UK. I didn't see any advertising for it. Do-nuts for me but who cares about the spelling so long as they taste delicious! Krispy Kreme are amazing but I am just as happy with a freshly cooked raspberry jam donut/doughnut. When my children were young and we went on holiday we used to buy them cooked to order on the sea front.Oh the memories! Certainly you meal was more nutritious but everyone needs a treat now and then.

    1. They were rather delicious! I don't think I've ever had a cooked to order doughnut! What a lovely treat!
