Sixty Two

Today was my birthday.  I celebrated turning sixty two.  Two years ago, I wasn't sure if I'd live to see sixty, so I felt very blessed to be able to celebrate my birthday, today.

I was woken up early by one of my friends calling to wish me a happy birthday.  It was the first of several phone calls throughout the day from family and friends, including a cousin from Australia.

Later in the morning, I video chatted with one of my friends; we've been doing this on my birthday for several years now.  It has become one of the highlights of my birthday celebrations.

Daughter and I had tossed around various ideas of what to do on my birthday - suggestions had included going to the beach, going to one of the botanical gardens, going out to eat at a Japanese restaurant, etc.  In the end, we decided to keep it low key.  I am still not quite up to doing a lot of things and just staying home and relaxing is very attractive to us both.  We ordered food to go from our favorite Italian restaurant (Olive Garden) and then, we went back to Michael's to pick up two additional skeins of wool, still on sale for $4.59 per skein and daughter had a 20% off the entire purchase coupon, as well.  I bought two skeins of black wool, to add to the plum wool, if needed, since I was able to buy only four skeins of the plum wool and I am not sure if that will be enough.

I started on the plum sweater back, last night, and did a little more, this evening:

Plum Sweater Back

I am still on the first ball of yarn.  I think I'll be able to do several more inches, before the yarn ends.

I am doing the back with a plain stockinette stitch (knit on one side, purl on the other) with a mock cable ribbing.  The ribbing is done with US #6 needles and the body is being worked with US #7 needles.  I haven't decided on the front, yet, but my friend suggested that a central cable will be nice.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Living to celebrate my 62nd birthday
- My daughter being home to celebrate with me
- Being able to video chat with my friend
- Birthday greetings and well wishes from family and friends
- A sunny, warm day (high of 73F)

How was your day?  Did you celebrate Veterans Day/Remembrance Day/Armistice Day/Poppy Day, today?

  1. A belated Happy Birthday Bless. It must have been lovely to be able to spend it with your daughter.
You must be a fast knitter! The sweater is growing very quickly. X

    1. Thank you, Jules, and not belated at all since it is still the 11th, over here. :)

It's just stockinette stitch, so it knits up fairly quickly. :)

  5. Belated Happy Birthday! How lovely to have all those options of how to celebrate and to know that it is just fine and okay to relax at home with food ordered in. I've never believed that one must go to great lengths to celebrate if there is more pleasure in doing something simple, and with your daughter there, you had a "party" of two!

You are catching up with me on my knitting, but then I did have to pull it undone and start again! I've got a couple of sewing projects, one already finished, a repair of the bag that DH's ATV helmet is stored in. I found I already had some black binding that I could stitch over the long rip and also over a frayed part where the drawstring goes. After I replaced the drawstring again I was pretty pleased with my effort, so was DH. My other sewing project is a skirt which will be made out of a very wide pair of jeans.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. Daughter offered to cook if I wanted to invite family over to dinner, but I decided to keep it low key and just celebrate with her. I had family over last month for the rosary and I'll be having them over, again, in December for the almsgiving.

It was my turn to unpick most of what I knitted, today. Not the back, but the front. I tried out a pattern, but I found a couple of dropped stitches at the beginning, so ended up unpicking the whole thing!

Glad to see that I am not the only one with several on-going projects! I was telling myself I shouldn't start knitting before I finish the quilts, but I wanted to knit, again. Sounds like you did a good job with the repair work. Have fun with the skirt!

  8. A very Happy Belated Birthday Bless. Low key sounds perfect to me and I'm sure having DD with you was the best birthday present of all.

Amy is 18 in February - quite a big celebration over here, but the thought of doing anything overly social horrifies her lol. I guess she'll be going low key as well. xx

    1. Thank you, Suzanne. Yes, just spending time with daughter was exactly what I wanted. My goodness, Amy is growing up fast! Maybe she'll like a couple of small celebrations - one with the immediate family and one with a few of her friends?

By the way, please wish Thomas a happy belated birthday from me. I saw the picture of the cake you made for him! Very clever!
