Instead, I did what we used to do when I was growing up, when we didn't have commercially made potato chips available - I made my own potato chips. I took the last potato from the basket and cut off about a third of it (it was a fairly large potato). I put the rest of the potato in the fridge for later. Then peeled the piece I cut off and sliced it as thinly as I could with my knife:

A few minutes on one side, then, turn them over to fry on the other side until golden brown. Then, remove with a slotted spoon and keep to drain on a paper towel. Repeat with the rest of the slices of potato until all are fried:

I sprinkled them with a little salt and chili powder, just the way we used to do when I was growing up. The chips were quite crisp and tasted good to me. I know they are not the best snack as they are deep fried, and, therefore, oily, but, at least, I know there's nothing added to them other than the salt and chili powder I added.
Have you tried making potato chips at home?
I love home made potato crisps (as we call them here). Delicious. I don't make them very often, as when I do, I can't stop eating them. I must try them with a little chilli powder.
ReplyDeleteIt's great that you're getting a taste for your food again. X
Yes, well, I, too, ate all what I made! :D So I must be careful now that my taste buds are coming back! I don't want to regain all the weight I have lost! But it was a nice treat. :)
DeleteIt's been a long time since I've tried to make potato chips because I didn't like how they turned out the last time I did. I couldn't get enough oil off of them. Yours look like they hit the spot, though. Especially since it was the way you did it when you were a child. Many things seem to taste better when they taste as they did when we were children.
ReplyDeleteYes, food from our childhood is comfort food, isn't it? I admit the chips tended to be oily. I wonder if baking them might be better? But I haven't tried baking them. Frying seems faster to me.
DeleteI've never actually tried making my own. I would like to one day though
ReplyDeleteThe trick is to slice them very thinly. Otherwise, they won't be crisp.
DeleteOh yummmm, Bless!!!! Comfort food at it's finest!!! This woukd be a great Super Bowl watching snack!
ReplyDeleteThat it would, Carolyn. :)
DeleteI've also made them in the oven. Sliced super thinly and place in single layer on a cookie sheet sprayed with Pam (or you can use regular olive oil or cooking oil to lightly coat the pan). Bake on one side until brown, turn them and do same on other side. Lightly sprinkle with salt or spices of your choice. They turn out crisp and less oily than frying. Such a nice treat!
DeleteOh, thank you, Carolyn! I think I shall try that, the next time. :)
DeleteThe store is only 3 blocks away and you have a car? Hmm, I think, nay I KNOW that I would have driven to the store, lol. But as you said, the store-bought ones didn't taste good to you the last time you had them and you know how to make your own (and they look great!). I'm glad you enjoyed them, Bless! I had some potato chips for dinner last night, from Aldi, and they were so good (everything tastes pretty good when you're on a diet, I find...). I'm glad that I had only put a few on my plate and that I was too tired to walk back to the kitchen to get more or I might have eaten the whole bag :)
ReplyDeleteLOL, Nathalie, yes, I live 3 blocks from a major intersection with at least 3 convenience/mini mart type stores, 2 doughnut shops, several coffee shops/small restaurants, etc. Walking distance from my house. There used to be an independently-owned grocery store, as well, but they went out of business (I really miss it).
DeleteMy homemade chips satisfied the craving and there isn't any left in the cupboard to tempt me. Don't want to have to let out the clothes I've been taking in, anytime soon! :) Glad you didn't eat the whole bag of chips and kept some for later!
Hope you are having a lovely day, Nathalie.
My family loves them! I need to experiment with putting different flavours on them.
ReplyDeleteSalt and chili powder is what I've always used, but I do like the sour cream and cheddar ones that are commercially made, and the barbecue flavored ones. Might be easier to make the flavored ones if baking, rather than frying.
DeleteMy mom use to make them for us all the time.. I have not had any home made ones in years.. I must make some.. Proud your taste buds are getting back to normal.. Know that was so hard.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day.
Thank you, Judy. Let me know how they turn out, if you make them. :)
DeleteOh those look good! I wonder if using a potato peeler to cut them would speed up the process for you and make them even thinner?
ReplyDeleteIt probably would have. I've used a potato peeler to slice them once, before; I don't know why I didn't use it again, this time. Well, maybe because I used a knife to cut the piece of potato off and to peel it, so, it made sense to me to use the knife to slice it, too. One less thing for me to wash!
DeleteReading about potato chips yesterday was fatal. I remembered that I had an unopened bag in the cupboard over the fridge. Well, it is not unopened now! DH was delighted when I produced two bowls for us to snack together while reading our books. I'm already trying to ignore the call of the unopened bag this evening!
ReplyDeleteBushlady
Oops! I'm sorry! :D Glad you enjoyed a nice snack, though!
DeleteMum used to make these occasionally when we were little. She used a peeler to get them super thin and it's surprising how many you can get from one potato. She never really cooked with spices or herbs so it was just salt for us. They were delicious. xx
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely going to use a peeler, next time, I think! It's funny how we've become so used to buying our snacks these days, instead of making from scratch at home, isn't it?
