August Grocery Shopping: Recap

In August, I had budgeted $75 for groceries (food only, no paper goods, cleaning supplies, pet food, etc.; eating out is also budgeted for separately) plus $13.21 leftover from the July grocery budget, which I carried over to August.

So, my August grocery budget was $75 + $13.21 from July = $88.21.

Week 1:

August 8 Groceries

August 12 Groceries

I went grocery shopping three times in Week 1, on August 8 (pictured above), August 11 for 3 cans of condensed milk (not pictured), and August 12 (pictured above) and spent:  $15.65 + $5.37 + $10.72 = $31.74

Amount left in the August grocery budget at the end of Week 1:  $88.21 - $31.74 = $56.47

 Week 2:

August 16 Groceries

I went grocery shopping twice in Week 2, on August 16 (pictured above) and August 18 for a container of half and half (not pictured) and spent $22.62 + $1.79 = $24.41

August grocery shopping spending at the end of Week 2:  $31.74(Week 1) + $24.41 = $56.15
Amount left in the August grocery budget at the end of Week 2:  $88.21 - $56.15 = $32.06

Week 3:

I went grocery shopping once in Week 3, on August 22 (no picture) and spent $12.87.
August grocery shopping spending at the end of Week 3: $31.74(Week 1) + $24.41(Week 2) + $12.87 = $69.02
Amount left in the August grocery budget at the end of Week 3: $88.21 - $69.02 = $19.19

Week 4:

August 29 Groceries

I went grocery shopping once in Week 4, on August 29 and spent $6.24.

August grocery shopping spending to date:  $31.74(Week 1) + $24.41(Week 2) + $12.87(Week 3) + $6.24 = $75.26
Amount left in the August grocery budget: $88.21 - $75.26 = $12.95

I had spent $10 at the Japanese bakery (on August 23) for the melon buns, raisin buns, and cream buns (included $.10 for a bag to carry my purchases, since I hadn't a reusable bag with me at the time).  Initially, I had included that purchase in my Eat Out/Entertainment budget, but, since I have a surplus in my grocery budget, I will include that purchase in the grocery budget, instead.

So, grocery spending in August amounted to $75.26 + $10 = $85.26
Amount left in the August grocery budget: $88.21 - $85.26 = $2.95

The $2.95 will be carried forward to September.

How did you manage with your August grocery budget?  Were you able to keep to your budget?  Did you go over or come under?

  1. Well done, Bless! I also came in under budget for August, but my eating out/ordering in expenses were pretty high again. Oh well, as I said before, I'm not going to stress about it, especially since only 2 of the meals were because I didn't want to cook and one of them was last night when I was overwhelmed with newborn kittens :)

    1. Glad you came in under budget for August groceries, Nathalie. As long as you are not stressing about the eating out/ordering in, then, I think it's fine. I'm sure you'll be able to cut back on it if you were on a very tight budget and really needed to. We all splurge somewhere, don't we?

  2. I used my household budget of $300 for more than just groceries. I bought a lot of non-food items in August. But I was able to use money set aside for my trip (Girls' Weekend) to get us through the last week. Also, I was able to do without when I ran out. I will need to restock my pantry again with items on sale.

    1. I think you did really well with your household budget. I hope there will be lots of good sales so you can stock up. Do you get sales before your Thanksgiving, like we get over here? That's when I stock up on baking supplies, some canned items, etc.

  3. I had two thoughts when I read this. The first thought was how much more disciplined you are than I am. The second thought was that you buy some seriously nice food. hugs x

    1. Thank you, Lyssa! You are very kind.

I admit that some of the food I've bought are more like snacks, but when there is no appetite and nothing tastes good or seems to appeal, I've tried to tempt my taste buds with things I either used to enjoy (frozen pizza; actually ate less than half of it) or thought I might like (tapioca pudding; again, ate less than half of one serving).

As for being disciplined (I presume you are referring to me keeping to my budget?), it seems to be almost automatic, these days. I shop the sales for the most part, although, if I really want something, I will buy it at full price and, every so often, I'll spend more for an item for convenience (just shop at one store rather than go to two different stores).
