Another Blurry Receipt! |
As I mentioned earlier, daughter went grocery shopping for me, on Monday. Sorry the picture of the receipt is so blurry! Anyway, she spent a total of $9.36 and bought:
Granny Smith apples, 5.2 lbs. @ $.39/lb = 2.03
Papaya, 4.23 lb. @ $.69/lb = $2.92
Bananas, 2.42 lb. @ $.49/lb = $1.19
White champagne grapes, 1.65 lb. @ $.99/lb = $1.63
1 Lettuce = $1.39
1 Cucumber = $.20
Total = $9.36 (no sales tax on food)
She went to one of the many ethnic grocery stores in my neighborhood. They consistently have lower prices and a good selection. Apples in the chain supermarkets, for example, would normally sell for $.99/lb., bananas sell for $.69/lb., and cucumbers sell for $.99 each.
I only needed fruits and vegetables, this time, because she had already bought bread, milk, and eggs, earlier, at the end of October. I didn't need any meat because I still have leftover chicken curry, frozen fish fillets, and smoked sausage.
When daughter lived at home, I had a grocery budget of $150/month for the two of us. When she went away to college, I allocated $75 for myself. But, I've gone over that a few times, because I've been taking food up to her or sending stuff with her. And, since my diagnosis, she's been coming home practically every weekend to be with me and go to medical appointments with me. I am still going to try to keep the grocery budget to $75 but will allow myself to go up to $100, if needed.
How does your grocery budget compare?
*****************
Today, I dropped daughter off at the airport early in the morning and went to work. In the evening, after I came home, I relaxed, video chatting with daughter and talking on the phone with two of my aunts.
Today, I didn't spend any money.
And I am grateful for:
- Daughter had a safe flight back
- A good day at the office
- Supportive co-workers and supervisors
- Phone calls with aunts
- A relaxed evening at home
How was your day? Hope you had a good day, today.
So happy you had a good day back at work.. Hope it was not too much for you, after your surgery. Having a nice workplace and coworkers , is such a blessing.
ReplyDeleteProud your daughter made it back to her home safely.
Have a good evening.. Judy
Thanks, Judy. It might have been a bit too much (going to work, yesterday), because I felt very tired today. In fact, I didn't go to the office today, as a result. I am planning to go tomorrow, though. Hope you have a blessed evening and a good day, tomorrow.
DeleteI allow myself $220.00 a month for food and paper products. I can't imagine how you can have good nutrition on much less than that. Good nutrition is going to be very important. Your body is going to be trying to repair itself.
ReplyDeleteMy grocery budget is for food items only. Household items, toiletries, pet food, etc. are budgeted for separately. I shop the sales and at ethnic stores to keep the costs down.
DeleteGood nutrition will definitely be important. My primary care physician and the oncology nurse both recommended high protein meal replacement drinks when I am on chemo, partly because I will probably not have much of an appetite. I have stocked up on some of them, already, and I will get more as I go along.
Daughter (who is studying nutrition as part of her epidemiology studies) has suggested I keep a food diary, so that's something I will be doing, as part of making sure I have adequate nutrition.
I'm glad you had a good day.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a budget. I kind of just buy whatever in terms of food. I usually go about every other week and spent around $100 each trip. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Sometimes I go to the store more if needed (milk, etc) so that increases it too.
I used to do that, at one time! Just buy whatever needed to be bought without a set budget. I thought I spent X amount, on average, but couldn't tell for sure. Then, I became curious about how much I actually spent, as opposed to how much I thought I spent. That's when I started to keep a log of how much I spent on groceries. It was, actually, pretty close to what I thought I spent. And then, I became curious about how much others spent and how much I should allocate and I developed a budget from there. I find it interesting, so that's why I do it. Weird, I know. :)
