More Grocery Shopping, Sunday's Doings and Monday

On Sunday, I made a quick stop at the ethnic grocery store on my way to pick up my friend who came over to lunch.  I purchased:

1 cauliflower, @$.89/lb = $1.18
green beans, @$.89/lb = $.75
1 lettuce = $1.39
1 cucumber = $.50

Total = $3.82

Add to Saturday's grocery spending of $36.81 = $40.63 spent so far in January.

I cooked the cauliflower to have with lunch: rice, chicken curry, cauliflower sauted with garlic and turmeric, leafy greens shredded and sauted with grated coconut, cucumber salad, and some of my homemade tomato chutney.  It was a good Sunday lunch to share with my daughter and our friend.

The rest of Sunday was spent visiting with our friend, doing a little shopping together, coming back home for tea, dropping off my friend, having two of daughter's friends visit in the evening, and doing a load of laundry.

Today, Monday, I went to the office and had a productive work day.  But started feeling ill in the afternoon.  So, after I came home, I took a long, 3 hour nap!  I'm feeling better now.  Hopefully, I'll be back to feeling 100% after a good night's sleep.

How was your day?

  1. Glad you are feeling better. Could you add some details about your lunch? For instance the sautéed greens with shredded coconut - do you just sauté in oil (if so, what kind?) and do you finish it off with any kind of sauce? Also how do you make your cucumber salad? It all sounds so good and I would like to try these for myself. Thanks

    1. Carolie, the cucumber salad is super easy - I peel and thinly slice a cucumber, sprinkle with salt and ground pepper. Sometimes, I sprinkle with a little vinegar, but daughter doesn't like it like that, so I didn't add any vinegar on Sunday; I added a little lemon juice, instead. I also add a little fresh green chilies, sliced, on top of the cucumber, but that's optional. A slightly fancier version of the cucumber salad includes sliced tomatoes, slices of red onions, the rings separated, and halved hard boiled eggs arranged on top.

      The sauted greens: finely shred (or cut) leafy greens such as kale or collard, saute/stir-fry in any kind of vegetable oil (just a little oil), with a little turmeric, grated coconut, finely minced onions, and salt, until the greens are wilted and cooked down. Add a little lime or lemon juice. We call this "mallung"; if you do a search under that word, you'll find lots of recipes.

  2. Thank you. Now I'm anxious to go grocery shopping for the ingredients to try these. They sound delicious!
