On Friday

Kale

The kale we planted as a cool weather crop is thriving in the summer heat and we've been harvesting the leaves and eating or freezing them.  We;ve offered them to the chickens, but, they only like them if they are chopped up into small pieces.  They seem uninterested in pecking at them when a whole leaf is offered or a bunch of leaves are tied up in the coop for them to peck at.  They are equally uninterested in watermelon rind!  But, they seem to enjoy moringa leaves.

On Friday, September 4, I had some lab work done in preparation for an upcoming doctor's visit.  On the way back, I put gas to the car.  Gas at the cheapest station in my neighborhood was $5.66 per gallon.  I put $50 worth of gas (which is what I budget for gas for a month) and that amounted to just about 8.8 gallons of gas.

After I came home, I made French toast for brunch.  I made a few extra pieces and they will be kept in the fridge to be warmed up and eaten over the weekend.

I tried to comment on a few blogs in the afternoon, but, I was unable to post my comments.  I think it is another issue with Blogger.  I didn't receive any new comments on my blog, either.

Cousin V texted me to say that she was planning to have a prayer meeting and lunch at her house in memory of Cousin P who passed away on Monday and inviting me and my daughter to attend.  I accepted the invitation and asked her if she'd like me to bring a dish.  She said she'll let me know.  I also chatted with Cousin P's daughter.

In the evening, daughter and I spent a pleasant hour or so in the garden, watching over the chickens as they roamed in the garden.  They were still exploring the garden when M arrived to tend to the garden.

In the evening, I made us some potato chips for a snack.  Two medium potatoes, sliced thinly, deep fried, and sprinkled with salt and chili powder.  We shared them with M and he thought they were some of the best potato chips he's eaten.

Daughter had a pork chop and salad for dinner; I had half a packet of ramen noodles with thin slices of pork added to it.  Afterwards, for dessert, I baked a chocolate cake as the last box of "brownie" mix I had in the pantry turned out to be a box of fudge chocolate cake!  It is finally cool enough to turn the oven on to bake something in the evenings.  Daughter and I enjoyed a slice of cake, each, with a scoop of ice cream.  It was a nice way to end our Friday.

On Friday, I was grateful for:

- Access to health care and health screening checks
- Medical insurance
- The availability of gas for the car
- M's help with the garden
- A safe drive to the clinic and back

My joyful activity for the day was sitting in the garden watching the chickens.

Plans for Saturday include laundry, house cleaning, and maybe going to the park in the evening with a friend.

How was your Friday?  What are your plans for the weekend?  Are you able to comment on blogs?

  1. I left a comment on yesterday's post, I hoped it would wait for blogger to work out whatever was wrong, but apparently not! Oh well. I think your health goal is very important and hope your tests are good and all goes well with the doctor appointment. My goal for this month is to get fully prepared for my October-November South America trip. My sister and I are going for three weeks to Chile and Argentina, with a brief visit to Brazil. We are both nervous! But we're visiting friends so I think it will be ok!

    1. Thank you for letting me know and commenting again, Celie. I don't know what was wrong with posting comments, yesterday, but, I'm glad it seems to have corrected itself! Yes, my health goals become more and more important as I get older.
Oh, I do hope you and your sister have a wonderful trip and everything goes well! I'm sure you are excited about it, as well as nervous! I hope the excitement overrules the nervousness and you have fun visiting your friends. :)

  2. I think if I was a chicken I would want my kale cut up, too! Not that they are not capable of eating from a whole leaf.
I hope the prayer meeting and lunch will bring comfort for you all, now your cousin has passed. (((Hugs)))

    1. Pecking at an item such as a bunch of kale or a watermelon rind is supposed to provide the chickens with enrichment activities while they are in a coop or enclosure and keep them from getting bored. But, they weren't interested! The daily hour or so of free ranging in the garden is something they are enjoying, though.
Thank you, Bushlady. It'll be good to be with family and share a prayer and a meal. I've been asked to bring a dessert, as usual. :)

  3. Love that you have a grateful list. I think we all need to do that. I used to eat kale quite often but now I find it is just hard on my stomach for some reason...along with several other things.
Have a blessed Labor Day Weekend- xo Diana

    1. Thank you, Diana. Yes, I try to do a daily gratitude list. I'm not the biggest fan of leafy greens in general, but, the kale is growing well in the garden and I am happy to eat it.
Hope you're haveing a blessed weekend, too. :)

  4. I have only just found myself able to comment again. Yesterday I tried for ages before seeing on Nana Diana's blog that it was a universal issue. I'm glad it's working again now.
I hope your family prayer meeting goes well. It will be good to spend time together and remember P. Are P and V siblings, or cousins too? I can't remember.

    1. Thank you, Lady Ella; yes, we were all having issues trying to comment, yesterday.
Yes, V and P are cousins, but, they are doubly related because V's mother and P's father were siblings while V's father and P's mother were also siblings. V has a sister, but, she's currently in Scotland. V & R's father was my mother's brother while P's mother was my mother's sister. :)

    2. I am clearly losing my mind! I read that explanation in one of your recent posts last week, and even stopped to try and think it through/understand... Brain like a butterfly!

    3. Not at all! You have plenty of other things to keep your mind occupied than the complicated relationships of a blog friend's family! :D But yes, the brother and sister of one family married the sister and brother of another family.

  5. I've been absent for a couple of days, so I hadn't noticed an issue with Blogger. I'm glad it seems to have been resolved, anyway. X

    1. Yes, we couldn't post comments on other blogs for a day or so, but, it seems to have been resolved, now. :) I hope you are having a lovely weekend, Jules.

  6. I haven't made potato chips in years. As I remember it, they were good, but a little too thick. Yours sound perfect.
Hopefully, the commenting problem is fixed because it was annoying.

    1. I used a mandolin to slice the potatoes, June, and they turned out quite well. Still a little thicker than commercially made chips, but, crunchy enough and definitely cheaper! Not necessarily healthier, but, at least you know what's been added to them, etc. :)

    1. Thank you, Linda. I try to do a daily gratitude list. Otherwise, it's too easy to complain about things that go wrong and forget the everyday blessings.

  8. It seems like I missed the problems with Blogger and am glad we are back on track. Don't want anything to delay my digging out!
At least I'm in the current month lol
Oh gosh. Those potato chips sound wonderful!

    1. Blogger is letting comments come through but now, it is not notifying us of new posts on the blog reader lists. I've been visiting each blog I read on a regular basis to see if there are any new posts! But, look at you getting caught up on my blog posts! Well done!
