| June 16 Groceries (1/2 gal. half & half not pictured) |
I ordered groceries on Monday night and they were delivered today (Tuesday, June 16). Next day delivery is free with the basic paid membership, so, that's the delivery option I choose.
I wanted half and half (not pictured above as I put it in the fridge right away) for my daughter's coffee, another loaf of bread as we are coming to the end of the previous loaf, some bananas as I am running short of fresh fruit and we haven't had any bananas, recently. some convenience items (cold cuts & frozen pot pies), canned meat (SPAM. 2-pack) for the pantry (plus it was cheaper than the canned corned beef I was also considering buying), and I wanted to take advantage of a few sales to stock up.
I had come to the end of a 10 lb. bag of rice and I wanted to buy another bag to replace it. The 5 lb. bags of store brand white long grain rice was on sale with a coupon, making two of them (= 10 lbs.) a little cheaper than one 10 lb. bag of rice. We go through a lot of rice, so I stocked up and bought four of the 5 lb. bags of rice, for a total of 20 lbs. of rice (only one bag of rice is pictured, above).
The cold cuts were on sale, too, and I bought some for easy brunch sandwiches and the frozen pot pies are for an easy dinner on a night when I don't feel like cooking.
The ice cream is a treat, of course, and so is the can of coconut water (I ordered 6 cans of it, but, apparently, they only had one can left! )
Here's the receipt:
Item Details

$0.10
My total came to $56.14.
June Grocery Budget (for food items only) = $250 - $26.13 (spent in May) = $223.87
Spent to date = $59.60 + $57.80 + $56.14 = $173.54
Balance left in June Grocery Budget = $223.87 - $173.54 = $50.33
Oh-oh! Only $50 left in the grocery budget with half the month still left! I am going to have to keep the $50 for fresh produce, dairy, and bread, do minimal grocery shopping, and eat from the freezer and pantry for the rest of the month, if I want to keep to the budget! No more stocking up for the rest of the month!
As always, I am grateful for:
- Being able to order groceries online and have them delivered
- The availability of groceries
- Sales and offers
- Being able to stock up from time to time
- Really pleasant grocery delivery people
Do you have a monthly grocery budget? Do you include household supplies in it or just food items? Assuming you do have a grocery budget, are you able to keep to your budget?

You have a great plan and you are doing a wonderful job ๐ ๐ ๐
ReplyDeleteThank you, Linda. You are very kind. I'm going to have to rein in my grocery spending for the rest of this month, but, I am pretty confident that I can do that. :)
DeleteSo impressed with your coupon savings. They are not as common in the UK as they used to be, but now we get money off through our "loyalty apps". I suspect these are of greater benefits to families who do a large shop, not singletons or two-person households. I must get some SPAM, it's a useful standby
ReplyDeleteThank you, Angela, but the "coupons" I use are digital coupons that are offered by the grocery store. You load them to your store loyalty card/account and they get applied when that item is purchased. Also, the store receipt shows any of their on sale/on offer specials as "coupon/sale" on the receipt, so that's a little confusing, too. For example, the ice cream was already on sale/offer for $3.99 and I applied a $1 off digital coupon on top of that to get them at $2.99 each.
DeleteIf you didn’t buy anything else for the rest of the month, I don’t think you would go hungry. If nothing else, you could fill up on rice.๐
ReplyDeleteYou are right, June! We will not go hungry! Especially since I harvested three tiny potatoes from the garden, this morning, and I still have kale growing. :D
DeleteYour items don't seem to have a horrid little warning on them that reads "High in salt", or "High in sugar" or "High in fat", or sometimes two of these! I suppose I should be happy that Health Canada is looking out for us, but it is rather off putting, especially around Christmas when all the extra goodies are in the store.
ReplyDeleteThe nutritional information is there on the packages, Bushlady, but, they are not very obvious and are not considered as warnings that something is high in sugar or fat or salt. They are required nutritional information and the manufacturers have to comply.
DeleteThe package of cold cuts, for example, shows the number of calories per 2 oz. serving (doesn't state how many slices make a 2 oz. serving, though), the amount of saturated fat, sodium, and total sugars by both weight (grams) and percentage of daily value based on a 2,000 calorie diet, on the front of the package (lower right hand corner) in the small white boxes (not bright colors; just visible in the photo above). And there is a more detailed nutritional information table at the back of the box.
The pot pies also show these nutritional info on the front of the boxes (same lower right hand corner, but, in brown boxes and not shown in the photo above).
The box of ice cream bars, however, only gives the number of calories on the front of the box and refers one to the more detailed table at the back for additional information.
However, the onus of decision making based on the nutritional information falls on the consumer. Not everyone makes an informed decision and, sometimes, some of us, choose not to! Especially when it comes to convenience, treats, etc. :D
We have all the nutritional information as well, a long list. Then at the Subway, each item shows calorie content. Eating used to be more fun!
DeleteYes, Bushlady; I've noticed the calorie count on some menus, as well. I tend not to look at the calories when I am eating out or getting take out! :D
DeleteIt was so nice this week not to have to worry about too much meal planning. We did well on our budget though so that was nice!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you didn't have to worry much about meal planning. Well done on staying on budget, too. :)
DeleteThis was a really good stock up sale for you.
ReplyDeleteI am curious how your $50 held up.
Were there really good sales that you couldn't resist?
Read on to find out. lol
Thank you, Debra. Those stock up priced sales are my undoing! But, you'll have to read on to find out how I managed with my $50. :D
