If you are looking for dinner ideas, here are some simple dinner menus, also from the above book:

Simple Dinner Menus

Last week's meal plan options worked to a certain extent with some tweaking and substitutions.  I cooked pork chops instead of a pork curry and didn't cook the fish curry I had planned to cook, for example.  But, we enjoyed some delicious meals and that's what matters, isn't it? 

Rice, Breaded Shrimp, Broccoli, Chutney

Moving on, here are this week's meal plan options:

Brunches:  Scrambled eggs, fried ham, homemade bread (on Monday); boiled mung beans with lunu miris (or sugar); cold cuts sandwiches; fried rice; waffles with bacon and syrup; milkrice and seeni sambol and/or jaggery (on May 1); leftovers

Dinners:  Rice with the last pork chop, carrots, broccoli (daughter; on Monday); rice, breaded shrimp, broccoli, tomato chutney (me; on Monday);  Rice with broccoli and ground beef mixture; Pasta with ground beef mixture and pasta sauce (me) or pesto (daughter); Rice, chicken curry, mallung, and chutney; Leftovers.

I did a bit of meal prep on Monday night, cutting up some vegetables:

Carrots, Onions, Celery (Stalks and Leaves), Broccoli Stalks

Then, I browned one pound of ground beef (from the freezer) and added the vegetables to it:

This meal plan might change as the week progresses, of course.

I am grateful for being able to plan for a variety of meals.

  1. It was interesting reading the meal suggestions, but most of them are not my cup of tea. :)

    1. I'm not sure if they all qualify as "simple" menus, in my opinion, but, maybe I should pick one and try to cook the dishes called for in the menu. :) The last luncheon menu of yellow rice and chicken curry with fried brinjal (eggplant) is very doable. I haven't seen billing here, which is a type of sour fruit also called Bilimbi (Averrhoa bilimbi), though, so, I'd need to substitute some type of chutney for that.

  2. I'm working to my plan this week, and I'll make a new one on Saturday. It saves me so much time, sorting my meals in advance. I'll be making your fish curry on Thursday. Xx

  3. What intriguing menus. When we were first married I made frikadeller quite often. I have never cooked lobster. And as for lampreys, King Henry 1st of England died from eating too many!!

    1. They are interesting menus, aren't they? Frikkadels came to us from the Dutch. The lampries mentioned in the menu are not a type of fish. It is a very specific rice dish, of Dutch Burgher origins, with specific accompaniments, baked in a banana leaf. The name is supposed to have come from Dutch for "lump of rice". :)

  4. I like the menus, but I like your photos even more! I was interested in some of the dessert items, like, "chocolate biscuit pudding", "nougat pudding" and "rum omelette"!

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. Chocolate biscuit pudding is made by alternating layers of crushed chocolate biscuits and sweetened whipped cream mixed with whipped egg whites topped with glace cherries. Nougat pudding is a custard mixed with homemade nougat stirred into it. Rum omelette is a sweet omelette, flavored with rum and then, rum is poured over it and lit. :)

  5. I love your photos of the meals you had!!! I used to have cookbooks but gave them away. I live alone since 1998 (since my divorce) so I don't follow any recipes...but there are recipes that I have made and memorized over the years and I go with those.
    Now thankfully with YouTube and the internet, I can look up any recipe I need!

    1. Thank you, Linda. I used to collect cookbooks at one time. I've downsized my collection over the years, but, I still have about a dozen or so, including a book of recipes my mother had copied in her own handwriting and some of the cookbooks she bought as a young wife. I will not get rid of those. I rarely follow recipes for everyday cooking, these days, but, every now and then, I will try a new recipe. :)
