| April Week 3 Groceries |
I put in an order for groceries last night and had my groceries delivered today (Friday).
As usual, I tried to shop the sales, using digital and personalized coupons Once again, I specified either no substitutions or which substitutions I wanted. That part was a bit tricky as I wanted to keep this week's grocery bill to under $43, but, at the same time, make sure that I had at least $35 worth of groceries to qualify for the waiver of the delivery fee of $6.95.
This week's main stock up items were the jars of peanut butter on sale with a digital coupon for $1.99 @. They have a "best by" date of February 2027 (one jar was March 2027). Daughter and I can go through a jar of peanut butter in about 6 weeks if not less and it is a good source of shelf stable and ready to eat protein in case of an emergency. The bottle of ketchup was another pantry stock up item; I have one other bottle that was purchased in February, but, I am going by the "2 are 1 and 1 is none" rule for pantry stock up items! Besides, the price with the coupon was too good to pass up; it has a best by date of October 2026 and I know we will use it up well before then.
One of the items I wanted, 1 pound of fresh green beans @ $2.99/lb., was available, but, in such poor quality that the shopper was kind enough to send me a picture of the green beans to ask if I still wanted them, and I declined. I really appreciated her doing that. I received everything else.
Here's the receipt:
Order Summary
Item Details
14 Items
Other Fees
$0.40
My total came to $40.08.
My April grocery budget is $250 - $3.70 March overspend = $246.30
Total spent to date = $59.53+ $57.18 + $40.08 = $156.79
Balance remaining = $246.30 - $156.79 = $89.51
I am pleased with this week's grocery shopping and what I bought and spent.
As always, I am grateful for:
- The availability of groceries
- Being able to order online and have it delivered
- Sales and coupons and other deals
- Being able to stock up when items are available at reduced prices
- Coming slightly under budget this week!
Have you found any good deals on groceries, recently? How do my prices compare with yours? Higher? Lower? About the same?

Hi Bless xxx I'm always amazed when you show how much you've spent (meaning how little everything cost you). Prices in New Zealand are so much higher in comparison.
ReplyDeleteHi Ratnamurti. I try to shop the weekly sales items and try to keep the grocery spending low. I am just looking up the weekly specials online for a NZ grocery store called New World Opotiki (chosen at random) and comparing some prices to my store that I order from. The broccoli, at NZ$ 1.99 each vs. US$2.49/lb. (about $1.79 each, per website; depending on the size of the broccoli); cauliflower NZ$ 3.49@ vs. US$2.49/lb (about $5.23 each according to website). Also, there is the kg vs lb factor, too. I'm enjoying seeing the prices at one of your stores. :)
DeleteIt is a full time job managing the shopping these days. I remember when I was little my mum went to the local village shop each day for her groceries and vegetables. There were no offers, rewards, discounts or the like, but she could easily keep within her housekeeping budget and without all the hardwork we have to do now to keep the costs down. You did well with your shopping.
ReplyDeleteYes, it was different several years ago, wasn't it? Even here, until recently, grocery prices were quite reasonable. But, these days, inflation seems to have raised the cost of living and grocery prices have soared (even though we had been promised lower grocery prices on Day One! LOL)
DeleteThank you, Vivien; I try! :)
I bought a bag of 5 avocados, too, but they cost $3.97 Canadian. They are not fully ripe yet, though and they are not "Jumbo".
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a good price to me, Bushlady. My store has a 2 lb. bag of mini avocados for $5.99. :)
DeleteWe used to have groceries delivered or picked them up. It was rare when they asked us about produce when it looked bad but always appreciated. I'm impressed you spent less than your budget AND still spent enough to waive the delivery fee. Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteI started picking up my groceries when the pandemic started and the grocery stores started to offer the service. I switched to delivery in March of this year, when my daughter paid for a store membership for me - the free delivery (with a minimum purchase) came with the membership. I am still trying to figure out the ins and outs of it, but, I am getting used to the convenience of having the groceries delivered. :)
DeleteYou did well on your grocery shopping. Coupons and sales really help to lower the cost.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Linda. I try to shop the sales as much as I can. :)
DeleteGood job staying at the spending level you were aiming for. I am not so good at that and now sit at $5.89 over for the month with a week left.
ReplyDeleteI have a good supply of food of course but somehow trips to the grocery store keep happening. Why is that?
Thank you, Debra. I think it's getting more and more difficult to keep to a budget, these days! You probably had a good reason to go over budget this month and it usually evens out over the year, doesn't it? I was starting a new grocery order, today, even though I've a good supply of food, too. I think some of us are in a stock up the pantry while we can frame of mind, these days. :)
