After the Almsgiving

The Last of the Butternut Squash

Thank you to all who left such kind, considerate, and respectful comments and genuine questions on my almsgiving posts.  I truly appreciate them.

Happy Winter Solstice and the first day of Winter!

I had thought that I would sleep in on Sunday, especially since I didn't go to sleep until past 4:00 a.m.  But, I got up at 8:00 a.m. and couldn't go back to sleep.  So, I had a cup of tea, got dressed, unloaded the dishwasher, etc.; daughter was surprised to see me already up and about when she got up around 8:30 a.m.  She woke up with a migraine-related visual aura but, couldn't go back to bed because her friends were coming over for the planned pancake/waffles breakfast at 9:00 a.m.

Her friend C, who lives out of state and was visiting family to attend a grandparent's funeral, arrived just after 9:00 a.m. and they chatted and had some one on one time before friend A arrived around 9:30 a.m.  A third friend V was not well and had let daughter know she was not attending the breakfast, out of consideration for the others.

There was a lot of laughter and chatting while daughter and her friends made scrambled eggs and pancakes (apparently, they didn't want waffles).  Friend C left around 10:30 a.m. and friend A stayed for another couple of hours.

I had retreated to my bedroom after I had greeted friend C when she first arrived, but, I sat in the family room when it was only friend A.  These are girls I've known since daughter was in middle school and it is lovely to see how they've grown over the years and stayed in touch.

After they had their pancake breakfast, I made myself waffles for my brunch.

I had just finished my brunch when gardener friend M showed up!  He had been unable to tend to the garden on Friday since he had an issue with his truck.  So, he was making up for it by working on his day off!  He cleared up the butternut squash vines and harvested the last of the butternut squashes!  The biggest one is just around 6 inches, the smallest one is just under 2 inches!  I think that will go in the compost heap, but the other two might yield about a cup and a half of squash to be cooked!

I served a plate of the leftover almsgiving food for M and he enjoyed it.

Later in the afternoon, I made myself an egg salad sandwich.

After that, daughter helped me to put away the dishes and other items that are used only for our almsgivings.  They are stored on the higher shelves in the upper kitchen cabinets that I can barely reach even when standing on the top step of a two tiered step stool.  I am definitely vertically challenged!  Daughter also cleaned the top of the refrigerator for me and I cleaned the top of the vent hood over the stove and the cabinet doors directly above.  I would like to clean the rest of the kitchen cabinet doors before the New Year.

Both daughter and I had naps in the early evening.  Afterwards, we both had leftovers for dinner.

On Sunday, I was grateful for:

- Daughter had a good gathering with her friends
- The sound of laughter blessing the house
- M making time to tend to the garden
- The last of the butternut squashes from the garden
-  A lovely day

Sunday's joyful activity was sharing some of the almsgiving leftovers with M.

Plans for Monday include getting my flu vaccine, making a batch of blueberry jam, and maybe sewing a couple of New Year gifts.

How was your Sunday?  Did you do something special to observe Winter Solstice? What are your plans for Monday?

  1. Glad the hear all went well with your events over the weekend. I hope you have a couple of days of relaxation planned. We weren't celebrating the Winter Solstice, but we had my extended family over for an early Christmas celebration yesterday.

    1. Thank you, Diana. Yes, it is lovely to see daughter's childhood friendships continuing well into adulthood.
Wish you a very happy Christmas and all the best in the New Year. :)

  3. I didn't realize that you were not very tall. That would account for your need for gardener M to help you occasionally, before your daughter moved home. You've reminded me that I need to clean the top of the fridge and that one cabinet that doesn't reach the ceiling. I guess I celebrated the winter solstice by taking a walk while it was still light, and then baking cookies, and of course the Christmas tree gets lit up every morning.

    1. At my tallest, I was 1/2 inch short of 5 feet, although I always claimed to be 5 feet! LOL! Now, however, due to recent compression of my spine, I seem to have become shorter! It's quite a stretch to reach anything, especially in the upper shelves of kitchen cabinets, unless I stand on the step stool and the highest shelves are accessible only if I stand on the kitchen counter (and of course, my daughter has something to say about that! LOL.)
I like your winter solstice celebration. :)

  4. Most of Sunday spent travelling to our daughter's new home. It is a truly beautiful house, and having a bedroom with an ensuite bathroom feels like staying in a hotel!! My grandsons helped me finish decorating the Christmas cake this afternoon, whilst Bob fixed things to walls. Tomorrow I am sewing curtains!!

  5. Can I add another almsgiving question, please? Is almsgiving a day when everyone gives alms on the same day, or does everyone have their own day?

    1. Generally, there is no specific day to hold an almsgiving; one can hold an almsgiving any day the monks are free to attend. In fact, the monks generally depend on the congregation to provide them with their daily meals, either by bringing the food to the temple or by inviting them to their homes. In majority Buddhist countries like Sri Lanka and Thailand, some monks still beg for alms as part of their daily rituals. There are certain special days when the temple celebrates a religious occasion (such as the day the Buddha attained Enlightenment or at the conclusion of the rainy season retreat) when an almsgiving will be held at the temple and everyone is invited to participate. Often, one family or a group of families will undertake to sponsor that almsgiving but others will also volunteer to contribute something. Everyone attending these events will be provided lunch or dinner (even though the monks don't eat dinner), depending on the time of day.

  6. It sounds like your daughter's holiday brunch went well.
And now you have the things put away and your house back in order.
I imagine you two are tired after hosting for two different gatherings over the weekend.
Relax and know you did a good job :)

    1. Daughter and her friends enjoyed their holiday brunch. Daughter had made beaded jewelry as gifts for her friends and one friend brought her cookies and the other friend brought her a plushie (a plush animal).
The house is in order, although, no doubt it will look messy in no time!
We are both tired. Daughter is working both today and tomorrow, but, she has taken Christmas Eve off. :)

  7. So glad that your daughter was able to have a good breakfast celebration with her friends. It must be nice for her now that she is back with you especially if her childhood friends are close by.

    1. Thank you, Sharon. Daughter enjoyed her holiday brunch get together. One of her friends lives in Seattle, Washington and another lives in northern California, but, two of them live close by. She has been making it a point to get together with them at least once a month.

  8. I love the idea of a breakfast gathering. For the last two years my friend and I have met together for brunch, on Christmas Eve, and I always enjoy it.
What will you do with your squash? I'd be tempted to make a curry :)

    1. Breakfast/brunch gatherings are nice, aren't they? Especially when the guests pitch in with the cooking! :D
I haven't decided how to cook the squash. A curry sounds good or maybe we'll just roast them. :)

  9. Your daughter sounds like she had fun! Great for her! I'm glad you got more squashes! I got 2 from my plants and my mum gifted me a mammoth one of hers!

    1. Thank you, Kezzie. Yes, my daughter had fun, which is nice because she's been a bit despondent since our cat, Dancer, passed away. I'm glad your mum shared some of her squashes with you. :)

  10. You are short like myself. I am 5 foot 2, I think. It is good that your daughter had a nice breakfast get together ❤️

    1. I'm shorter than you are! If it is a competition to see who is shorter, I'd win! :D
My daughter and her friends had a nice breakfast get together. I had been a bit concerned when she moved back home that she'll miss the friends she had made in Berkeley during the 11 years she lived there, and the friends she had down here would have moved on with their lives, but, they've managed to get together at least once a month since she moved home. I needn't have worried! :)
