August Grocery Shopping: Part 3

I put in another order of groceries, today, and picked up the items in the afternoon.

I needed (as in we are all out of it or coming to the very end of what I had bought previously): bread, bananas, some other fruit for variety, cucumber, lettuce, more half & half, and bagels (for easy breakfasts), and a couple of stock up items which included rice (just finished a 10lb. bag and will be opening another 10lb. bag this week and I like to have 20 lb. rice on hand at all times) and a new bottle of oil as I am half way through the last bottle of oil.  The rice (white, long grain, store brand) wasn't on any special sale; it rarely goes on sale and it is one of the items I will buy at full price; the store brand vegetable oil was on sale, although not by a lot.

In addition, I bought some wants which were on sale.  The store has started having weekend specials with prices valid only on Saturdays and Sundays.  This weekend they had frozen shrimp, raw or cooked, 12 oz. for $5.00, and I thought it was a good deal.  I also took advantage of a sale and bought four packages of hot Cheetos (you had to buy 4 to get the sale price) as daughter had just finished the last bag of hot Cheetos I had bought, earlier, in June.  Plus a container of ice cream.  These items are definitely wants and treats!  But, at least, I didn't pay full price for them.

I bought:

As always, I am grateful that there are groceries available and I am able to indulge in a few treats when they are on sale.

How is your August grocery shopping coming along?

  1. Cheetos = orange fingers :)
I've decided to take your advice, Bless, and not worry about a meal plan this week. I'll try to get back on track next week. Xx

    1. Yes! Or red fingers because most of the packets I bought are the extra hot variety. Only one regular, orange one. :)
I think it's find to skip meal planning, especially when you are on holiday. Next week is good enough. :)

  2. I'm stretching what I've got in the fridge - I don't want to buy anything else before we go away. Sometimes treats become necessary - especially ice cream!

    1. You are doing the right thing using up what you have in the fridge before going away. When one lives in a house without central air conditioning, ice cream becomes an essential item in the summer! :D

  3. Rice is not a staple of our diet like yours, so we buy rice 1 lb at a time. :) However, my son used to eat a lot of rice (loved his rice cooker) and he would buy 10 lbs at a time just for himself.

    1. We are definitely rice eaters in this household. When I was growing up, there used to be a big wooden storage chest in almost every kitchen where rice would be stored. The one in our kitchen used to be about 5ft. long, 3ft. wide, and at least 3ft. high; my mother had it built to her specifications and it was lined with thin sheets of metal (tin, I believe) to keep bugs away. It held most of the rice from each harvest from the family's rice fields.

  4. I usually buy plain frozen yogurt or vanilla ice cream but recently there was a special on "cookies and cream" ice cream that seemed to have my name on it. We are not into hot treats but plain, or rippled chips have a way of sneaking themselves into the cart on a regular basis.

    1. Vanilla ice cream (or butter pecan ice cream) are favorites here, too, but, we thought we'll try something new and different, this time. I like plain potato chips, but, I bought the spicy Cheetos for my daughter as they are what she likes the best.

    1. Thank you, Anne. I feel privileged to be able to do so. But, being able to get a few wants and treats makes a big difference, doesn't it?
