Smoky Saturday

Saturday morning, my daughter's phone call woke me up.  She apologized for waking me up, but she was getting ready to go out to see a musical ("Waitress") and have lunch with a friend, and I had asked her to call me when she was leaving.

After her phone call, I got up and had a cup of coffee.  Then, I opened a window to air out the house and I could smell smoke in the air!  It looked so hazy, outside, and the smell of smoke was so strong, that I went out into the garden to see if there was a new fire, close by, but there wasn't.  It was just the smoke from the other fires that had destroyed all those homes, already.  Apparently, the wind directions changed over night and we had an on-shore wind, which brought cooler temperatures but also blew all the smoke from the fires, inland, into the valleys and even, downtown.  The  air quality was so bad that  I couldn't stay outside for any time, at all, because I felt I couldn't breathe!  I came inside and closed the window I had opened, earlier, as I didn't want to trigger my asthma.

I spent a very quiet day, because I didn't feel like doing much.  I put away the washed dishes, played on the computer, watched cooking shows on TV, and relaxed.  I had a banana for breakfast, cheese toast for lunch, and a turkey pot pie from the freezer for dinner.  Pitted dates for dessert, as they satisfy my sweet tooth!

Aunt T called in the evening, when I was making a cup of tea, and I spoke with her for a bit.  Shortly after that, daughter called to say she was back from the show and lunch.  Still later, friend R called and we chatted for a bit.

Later in the evening, daughter and I video chatted.  She said the air quality up there is bad, too, because of all the smoke from the northern California fires!

Today, I am grateful for:
- No new fires
- Firefighters
- Being able to stay indoors during bad air quality days
- Daughter enjoyed a fun afternoon out with her friend and came home safely
- Phone calls and emails from family and friends

How was your Saturday?

    1. Thank you, Hon! Yes, I will be careful. The air is much better, today, and I hope it stays that way. How are you keeping? All is well, I hope. Take care and stay warm as winter approaches.

    2. We had a serious 'stays on the ground' snowfall a few weeks ago, serious enough to prompt the condo complex to order the snow removal service. DH started looking for a trip to warmer temperatures. We leave tomorrow and look forward to a holiday + I have chipped a tooth and made an appointment for repair. Dental work is so expensive here, the variance on my one repair should cover the flight which was the special running on Cathay Pacific. I chose not to order the dental coverage option on our provincial medical plan and never regretted it as I merely made it a point of DCA the sum to a specific investment . BTW, I wanted to mention, since you wrote about an appointment with a Retirement Financial Planner, I signed up when I noticed our community Fitness Centre was sponsoring a Financial Planner to talk about estate planning. Very worthwhile and learned a lot about how to keep the government hands out of our pockets when we pass on.

    1. Thank you, Nil! Yes, it's my birthday, today. :) 63 years old! I told my daughter I didn't feel a day older than 62 and she laughed and pointed out that it hasn't been a day, yet! :D We Skyped until midnight, last night, so she could sing happy birthday to me before we said goodnight. :)

    1. Thank you, Sharon. :) It's been a lovely day, so far (early afternoon, as I write). I am waiting until my daughter comes down to celebrate, but I have treated myself to a pizza for lunch and I am planning to bake some pastries, later in the evening. :)

    2. Thank you for the prayers. I just got the referral for the opthamalogist. The graves/thyroid is affecting my right eye. It's bugging out a little. Ugh. Need to schedule that tomorrow. Had another needle biopsy last week, waiting for the results. My endocrinologist says my whole thyroid needs to be removed. Probably in February. Funny, they have to get the thyroid regulated before they do surgery. It really affects your whole being. I was in ER last week. I had a panic attack. Never had one of those before. I couldn't stop shaking. I guess the stress of it all. Never had any medical problems until 2 years ago and I'm 56 now. Getting older isn't fun. LOL.

    3. (((HUGS))) Mia. No, getting older is no fun! This is a very stressful time for you; be gentle with yourself. When my lump was first discovered, one of the first things I did was give up my worries to a Higher Power. I am someone who likes to think she's in control of a situation, but I acknowledged that I really wasn't in control and asked for help, for my daughter's sake, more than for my own. I also did those few things over which I did have some control, to make sure my daughter was provided for - I met with my lawyer and updated my Will, I met with my financial planner and made sure my daughter would have access to funds as needed, and so forth. Doing so gave me a sense of inner peace with whatever the outcome was and it helped. I didn't fall apart until much later, towards the end, which took both my daughter and me by surprise, but which my oncologist said was fairly common. I am sure you have your family and friends to support you, but, if you do ever need to talk, send me an email and I'll send you my phone number. Take care.
