October Grocery Shopping - Week 3

10/15 Groceries

On Monday, I went grocery shopping to buy a few things.  I mostly went to buy the red lentils, rice, and onions for the prayer gathering, but, while I was there, I also stocked up on more cans of coconut milk, condensed milk (good price for this particular brand), and a few fruits and vegetables for my own use.  I bought the 20 lb. bag of rice because they didn't have a 10 lb. bag of this particular brand and it's the brand I like the best.  Some of the rice will be for the almsgiving in December, some for next Sunday's prayer gathering, some I will share with my daughter, and the rest will be enough for all of next year, as well!  It's one of those purchases that makes it hard to keep the prayer gathering budget separate from the almsgiving budget and the regular, monthly grocery budget.  I will assign $5 of the cost of the bag of rice to the prayer gathering budget, $5 to the almsgiving budget, and balance $10 to the regular grocery budget.  I used onions I had on hand, already, bought with the monthly household budget for the curries for the prayer gathering I've made so far, and some of these onions I bought on Monday will be leftover.

Anyway, here's what I bought:
20 lb. bag basmati rice = $19.99
2+ lb. red lentils @ $1.29/lb = $2.80
3+ lb. onions @ $.20/lb = $.64
6 cans condensed milk @ $1.79/lb =  $10.74
4 cans coconut milk @ $.99 = $3.96
1 cucumber @3/$1.00 = $.34
1 container (6 oz) raspberries = $.99
2 lb. red grapes @$.79/lb = $1.62
2 bananas @ $.49/lb = $.35
Total = $41.43

Of which, the prayer gathering portion comes out to:
5 lb. rice  = $5
lentils = $2.80
onions = $.64
2 cans coconut milk = $1.98
Subtotal = $10.42

Almsgiving groceries:
5 lb. rice = $5

Regular groceries subtotal = $41.43 - $10.42 - $5 = $26.01

I also picked up a few broccoli leaves - showed them to the cashier and told her they were for my cat - she didn't charge me for them and was very amused to know that my cat likes his greens!  Here's proof that he does eat them:

"Nom, nom, nom"

He really does like his greens!

October Grocery Budget = $75 + $4.64 carried over from September = $79.64
Spent to date = $25.02 + $6.41 + $26.01 = $57.44
Amount left = $79.64 - $57.44 = $22.20

Prayer Gathering Budget:
Spent to date = $12.74 + $10.29 (at the dollar store for another bag of meatballs @$1.99, 3 lbs. garbanzo beans, 3 air fresheners, can of peach pie filling, 1 cake mix) + $10.42 = $33.45

I still have to buy the chicken (whole chickens on sale for $.89/lb. per this week's sales ads), green beans, some fresh fruits for dessert, and maybe tomatoes and a cucumber for a salad, as well, ice cream, and drinks (including some wine and beer, as I think the beer I have leftover from the last prayer gathering is now too old?).  I always have a hard time choosing wine for this gathering because I don't drink wine (or anything alcoholic), and the past couple of years, I've asked one or two cousins to bring the wine they prefer to drink!  But, I can't do that every year, can I?  I kept the empty wine bottles from last year (some still have some wine in them, and I kept them in the fridge, but they've probably turned to vinegar by now?), so I plan to take pictures of the labels and show the pictures to the sales person at the liquor store and say, I want a bottle each of that kind!  Shall be doing that, tomorrow.

How is your grocery budget coming along, this month?

  1. I've abandoned the budget for this month. I started with good intentions but too many days without electric, feeling cold and wanting hot food has resulted in meals out and takeaways, so the budget is blown! I'll get back to it, and the healthy eating/diet when the work is finished.

    1. Yes, it is impossible to keep to a budget when you need to eat out, due to circumstances. Hot meals are a must when one is cold! I'm glad you were able to eat out/get takeaways as needed. Consider it all as part of the renovations budget!

    1. That he does! Broccoli, spinach, cauliflower leaves, some lettuces. Give him a piece of chicken, however, and he'll sniff at it and walk away! :)

  3. I always bought rice in small quantities until one summer we had a student living with us and cooking for himself. He used to buy large bags of rice and I began to see it made sense. We also enjoy rice and eat it at least twice a week, and when our son comes to visit, I have to make a huge amount as our granddaughter loves it so much!
    I regret that I never offered broccoli leaves to our cats or boarding cats over the years. I do remember one of our cats would chomp a spider plant down to the roots if it was within reach and I had to be careful that I didn't have any plants toxic to cats in the house.

    1. Well, I won't have to worry about running short of rice, for several month! Dancer tries to eat the houseplants; I have to keep them out of his reach! But, the dracaena is too tall for anywhere other than the floor and he has eaten all the leaves within his reach!

  5. It makes good sense to buy all the groceries together...your own and those items for the prayer gathering; but, it must be a pain to keep the two budgets separate.

    I like your floor in the kitchen.

    1. I really don't need to keep the two budgets separate, Susan; I just do it because I like to! I must have been an accountant in a previous birth! LOL! I know I didn't spend all my prayer gathering budget, this year, either, so, next year, I will reduce the budget. That makes sense, because, as a retiree, my income will be reduced.

      As for the kitchen floor - I used "peel and stick" vinyl floor tiles. I picked these particular ones because 1) they were only $.39 per tile, 2) I liked the marble effect, and 3) they were dark enough not to show dirt as quickly as a lighter color! :D They are now starting to peel in some places (I stuck them down over 20 years ago). There's hardwood flooring under them and the layer of vinyl flooring that was already there when I bought the house! I really should have got the kitchen floor refinished when I got the rest of the floors refinished, but I wasn't thinking, at the time!
