Dental Appointment on Thursday

Yay, I was able to ignore the first phone call (unknown number/telemarketer who didn't leave a message) and sleep until the alarm went off.  I started off the morning with putting the sofa slip cover to wash while I had my morning coffee and putting away the dried laundry from yesterday.  I spent the rest of the morning responding to blog comments, checking emails, speaking on the phone with Aunt T who called a total of 3 times, calling a family friend to check on her mother who has been diagnosed with lymphoma, and calling the monks at the temple to get a date for the year-end almsgiving.

In the afternoon, I ran errands.  But first, prompted by Bushlady's concern that I was skipping breakfast, I made it a point to eat a cold cuts sandwich for brunch.  Which, as the day turned out, was a good thing!

In the afternoon, I went to the post office to buy an airmail postage stamp and mail my card.  It cost $1.15 for the stamp.  Then, I stopped at the library to return the two books I had borrowed and I found two new books to borrow:

New Library Books

Afterwards, I went to my dental appointment.  I was there, on the chair, for two solid hours!  I was having the preparatory work done for a bridge.  I was given two injections to numb the area but required two additional injections to manage the pain!  I really wasn't expecting it to take so long and all that drilling!  I was fitted with a temporary crown, told to rinse my mouth with warm salt water, and to return in two weeks for the bridge fitting.  Insurance will pay for part of the costs, but my portion comes to $1,900.  I paid half of it, today, and will pay the other half when I get the bridge fitted on my next visit.  I realize that it is a blessing I can pay for my dental work without going into debt.  By the time I came home, it was almost 5:30 p.m., that side of my face was swollen, and I was in pain.

I had planned to visit Aunt T after my dental appointment, but I wasn't up to it.  Cousin P had called and left a couple of messages (I had invited her to go with me to visit aunt); I called her back and said I didn't think I could visit aunt.  Then, I called aunt T and made my excuses.  After that, I took two Tylenols, had a cup of tea, and took a nap.  I slept from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

After I woke up, I had one of the waffles I had made earlier with some chicken curry for dinner.   I was very glad I had eaten a sandwich earlier in the day!

Later, I video chatted with my daughter, who isn't feeling 100%, herself.  I hope she will be able to rest over the weekend and feel better.

Today, I was grateful for:
- Being able to sleep until I was ready to wake up, this morning
- Dental insurance
- Being able to pay my share of the dental bill without going into debt
- Tylenol
- An evening nap

Thursday's To Do List:
- Post office - DONE
- Library - DONE
- Daily walk
- Put away laundry - DONE
- Do another load - DONE
- Dentist - 3:00 p.m. - DONE
- Visit Aunt T
- Water the garden

I couldn't finish my to do list, today.  I guess I didn't plan my time too well - I should have realized I wouldn't feel up to doing anything much after the dental appointment and done more in the morning.

Friday's To Do List:
- Put the dried slip covers back on the sofa
- Remove the slip covers from the 2nd sofa and start washing them
- Water the garden
- Daily walk
- Have M tend to the garden
- Meditation session in the p.m.

How was your Thursday?  What have you planned for Friday?

  1. You must have been exhausted following your dentist appointment. I was at the dentist this week and although I was only in the chair for half an hour, my mouth was aching. I do hope your swelling has subsided by now and that you are no longer in any pain. Make sure you rest. X

    1. Thank you, Jules. I felt drained, yesterday. There is still a bit of swelling, but there is no pain. So, I am fine. But, I will take it easy, today, too.

  2. I hope your mouth feels better today. Two hours is a long time to be in a dental chair. I'm glad Bush Lady mentioned about you eating breakfast. When you hadn't eaten anything for the whole day the other day, I thought, "No wonder she's tired, she hasn't had anything to eat today." Watch out or we may become your nagging blog family. :)

    1. Yes, thank you, Live and Learn; my mouth feels much better, today. There is still a bit of swelling, but that should go down soon.

I have a very filling cup of coffee in the mornings, which is made with more milk than water (not brewed coffee, instant). I consider it the same as drinking a cup of milk and consider that my breakfast. But, thank you for your concern. I know I have very bad eating habits. :)

  3. There is NO WAY I could come up with $1900 OOP for a dental expense right now, without going into debt. You are amazing. You prove how frugal living prepares you for the inevitable emergency costs. Very well done! I salute you.

Two hours in the chair. Holy Moly. Maybe it was a good thing you didn't know ahead of time. Good thing Bushlady was looking out for you. I laughed though when I realized that after Aunt T phoned no less than 3 times, you ended up NOT going over to visit after all. I am sure she will understand why. Still, you did very well accomplishing much of your list after all.

Your daughter came down ill on the last long weekend. Is she trying to celebrate a holiday weekend by getting sick?? I can think of better ways. Oh, I just thought of something. Do you get Columbus Day off work? I hope you both feel better soon.

    1. Thank you, Susan. As a single parent and sole wage earner (I didn't receive child support), it has been very important to me to have a substantial emergency fund. This is something I have drilled into my daughter, too. And I am glad to say that she, too, has built up a respectable emergency fund.

No, my daughter doesn't get Columbus Day off work, so it's not a long weekend for her. She's feeling better today, though. Thank you.

Yes, I spoke with Aunt T, this morning, too. :) She now knows not to call me before 11:00 a.m. She waited till 12:30 p.m. to call! :D I very briefly considered going to see her, today, but, I think I will wait until next week.

  4. I was having my bridge replaced and I was there for almost three hours! Yuck! I have the temporary one on and have to go back in a couple weeks for the permanent one and to do a crown. Sigh. I wish I'd never had the bridge done. I only had it 5 1/2 years before it had to be replaced and I've had nothing but trouble with it. I don't have dental insurance so ouch! My dentist did take off some of the cost as I'd had trouble with the last one. I hope this one is better.

    1. Oh, Sharon, I'm sorry your bridge had to be replaced and you don't have dental insurance. I'm glad your dentist is giving you a discount. Hope the new bridge works out well.

  5. Bless,

I feel your pain with the telemarketing calls. Here’s a link to the FCC https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/stop-unwanted-robocalls-and-texts where they tell you what to do and have a link to put your phone on a do not call list. I did this several years ago and it really helped. I also signed up for a robocall app, which targets automated calls and disconnects them after one ring. Again, very helpful! You can search online for more information. Still, I’m ready to give up my land line because of all the telemarketing calls!

Hope your mouth feels better soon!

    1. Chris, thank you so much for the link! I asked one of the telemarketers to take me off their call list and she told me, "No", before I hung up on her!

I'm feeling much better, today, thank you. :)

  6. I'm so glad you took note of my busybody nagging and had a sandwich before that ordeal at the dentists. Those prolonged procedures are a real endurance test and seeing the bill afterwards is another trial! We don't have a dental plan either and a broken tooth this year set me back nearly $1000 and would have been more if I hadn't already had a root canal in it.
I hope with Chris's link you will be able to put a stop to most of those telemarketing calls. We are getting some bad scam calls in Canada and it really concerns us because there are immigrants with limited language and seniors with dementia who are less able to detect the falsehood in these calls.

Today I hung up a pork bone from a roast for the birds to clean up and I was pleased to see that they are working on it. The temperature dropped nearly to 32°F overnight so they need fat. I refilled all the feeders today.

    1. Bushlady, I was hoping you'd see that I took your concern to heart. :) I had a yogurt for breakfast, today, and a sandwich for lunch, and rice and curry for dinner. After which I baked a bread pudding for good measure and had a nice big serving of that, too! :D
