The Weekend Report: Taxes and April Groceries Week 1

Front Flower Bed on Friday

Saturday morning, I slept in and relaxed.  I felt happy because I had caught up on the filing backlog!  There are files to be gone through and organized (and cleaned out, too), but the stack of paper that had been sitting on my desk had been dealt with and tamed!

Saturday afternoon, I went to get my taxes done.  My appointment was for 3:00 p.m. and it lasted till after 5:00 p.m.!  At the end of it, I had a small Federal tax refund which got canceled out by the State taxes I owed!  Oh, well, I anticipated having to pay additional taxes this year because I lost my Head of Household filing status, since I can no longer claim my daughter as a dependent.

After I came home and had a cup of tea, I called friend R for a chat.  Then, I watered the front garden with the garden hose and watered the back garden with the sprinklers.  I also sorted through two more file folders and organized the contents.

Sunday morning, I slept in again!  Then, I sorted through another couple of file folders!  I am in the mood to organize my paperwork!  I went through my natural gas file folder and tossed out the past two years worth of bills and kept only the bills for 2018.

But, before I tossed the old gas bills, I made myself a comparison table for the payment amounts (and the therms used, when I remembered to include that).

I forgot to write down the therms I used in 2016, but I wrote them down for 2017; I will compare that to 2018 bills to see if I am using more or less gas or if the amount I use is the same, but the bills fluctuate due to increased in price per therm.

In 2016, I paid a total of $1,063.65 for gas (heating, water heater, and cooking) for an average of $88.64 per month.  Actual amounts varied from a high of $348.90 in February (extremely unusual but it was due to problems with the gas company - there was a gas leak -and they sent a letter around trying to explain the unusually high bill, but basically, their clean up costs got passed down to the consumer) to a low of $16.69 in September.
In 2017, I paid a total of $1,028.59, for an average of $85.72 per month.  Actual amounts varied from a high of $250.78 in February (Jan/Feb are our coldest months), to a low of $14.89 in October.

So far in 2018, the most recent bill I paid in early April seems to have been the highest, at $214.52; apparently, March was a cold month!  Since keeping the house warm is one area where I will splurge, I will continue to budget for it.
Sunday afternoon, my neighbor T called and we had a nice chat.  Then, I called friend R again to see if she wanted to go to pick up the shipping boxes, but she was having a sore throat and not in a hurry for the boxes, so we decided to pick them up another weekend.

Instead, I went grocery shopping and put gas to the car.  Gas has gone up to $3.39/gallon.  I had gone down to quarter of my tank, so filled up; a little over 12 gallons for $42.31.

Daughter's Grocery Shopping
Pictured above are daughter's groceries for this week.  She bought: Organic 100% juice cranberry juice, soy sauce, coconut water with matcha, coconut water with passion fruit, 2 soy milk matcha green tea, 2 soy milk coffee, broccoflower, spinach, bacon and pork sausage, turkey sausage, plantains, cuties (tangerines), beets, avocados, 2 sukiyaki ramen and kimchi ramen.  She bought everything from the 99Cents store for a total of $19.35!

I went to two stores, today.  The ethnic grocery store for the majority of my purchases and the Kroger affiliated discount store for the rest of it.  I didn't take a picture of the groceries, but took pictures of the receipts!

Store 1:  Ethnic grocery store -
Store 1 Receipt
Regular ground beef (30% fat) was on sale for $1.99; lean ground beef (15% fat) was $4.99/lb.  I bought 2 lbs. of the regular ground beef; I will drain off the fat.

I bought:
2 lbs. ground beef @ $1.99/lb = $4.17
1+ lb. chicken drumsticks @ $.69/lb (1 lb. would have been 3 drumsticks and I bought 4) = $1.11
5 packages frozen puff pastry dough @$1.99 (stock up item; normally $2.50 and higher) = $9.95
Tomatoes @$.39/lb = $.67
Tamarind pods @ $1.99/lb (bought just 3 pods; I use for my curries) = $.22
Green beans @ $.99/lb = $.63
Red potatoes @ 3lb/$1 = $.34
1 Zucchini @$.39/lb = $.10
Broccoli @$.49/lb = $.15
Onions @$.20/lb = $.26
Total = $17.60

Store 2: Discount store -
Store 2 Receipt

I mostly went for eggs (on sale for $1.79/doz), bread, and milk, but I also bought bananas, mangoes, and ice cream bars!

I bought:
1 loaf sliced bread = $1.25
6-ct. ice cream bars = $2.99
(sing with me - "What will you do, for a K------- bar?")
Bananas @$.49/lb (cheaper than at the ethnic store where they were $.69/lb) = $.44
2 mangoes @ 2/$.99 = $.99 (they were $.79 at the ethnic store)
1/2 gal. milk = $1.99
1 doz. eggs = $1.79
Total = $9.45

By the way, just about everything I bought at Store 1 was more expensive at Store 2, while the items I bought at Store 2 were more expensive at Store 1.

I spent $17.60 + $9.45 = $27.05

My April grocery budget is: $75 - $.69 (that I overspent in March) = $74.31
Balance remaining in my April grocery budget = $74.31 - $27.05 = $47.26

I don't have a meal plan as such for the week, but, I will bake or broil the chicken drumsticks so I can eat them with a salad and/or cooked vegetables  and maybe some of the red potatoes (daughter shared a recipe for oven fried seasoned potatoes).  I also want to make some curry puffs with some of the ground beef and one or two packages of the frozen puff pastry - they will be convenient to take for lunch to work next week (there was some uncertainty about the lunch/break room facilities at the new building, so I want to take something that doesn't need to be heated up and I can eat cold; a curry puff with some salad and a piece of fruit will be good).  I will cook the rest of the ground beef and maybe freeze for future meals or make something else with it.  In fact, I might add some of it to the green beans and make a tomato and onion curry to go with it and rice for some of my weekday dinners.

But here's what daughter cooked, today, for the week:

Daughter's Cooking Part 1
She made: peanut hoisin carrot stir-fry (this is the girl who said she didn't like cooked carrots when I cooked carrots in my stir-fries! She says I make them too soft!), maple sausage spinach and egg scramble, vanilla chai protein muffins,  quinoa, baked fries (garlic basil and garlic thyme), roasted oregano beets, honey sriracha broccoflower, boiled plantains, and turkey sausages.

Daughter's Cooking Part 2

This weekend,  I am grateful for:
- Getting caught up on my paperwork and filing
- Getting my taxes done and filed
- The amount I owed wasn't as much as I thought it would be
- It was 81F today!
- Video chatting with my daughter.

How was your weekend?  Have you filed your taxes?  Have you gone grocery shopping in April yet?  Are you noticing that certain things seem to be creeping up in price?

  1. Well done for getting your taxes done. We dont have to file taxes here, as it is done automatically, you just log in to the tax department and fill in any extra income and then a bit later you get an notificaton if there is a refund or you need to pay more. It is different for business and self employed of course.
I am doing my grocery shopping tomorrow, and prices here are going up all the time, I feel for young families.
Hope you have a good week.

    1. That's interesting to read how you do your taxes there! Hope you find a lot of good deals at the grocery store when you shop, tomorrow. Hope you have a good week, too, Sharon.

  2. Does your daughter put any of her food that she makes ahead in the freezer, or does she just eat from it all week from the fridge?

    1. I believe she just keeps it in the fridge and eats from it all week. Between her lunches and dinners, she finishes it all up within the week.

  3. Your flowers are so abundant and beautiful! I love that border!

Congrats on taming the paperwork monster. I need to do that in my exercise room again as I have a new pile to put away (or two). I'll take it upstairs and leave it in the pile that I have there. I do need to file everything in their proper files prior to hurricane season but right now I'm in no rush to do so. I do keep a lot of old paperwork because I've had to refer to it in the past so since I have the room, better safe than sorry!

We also owe on our taxes and I'll be mailing that check this week. It hurts but this is why having an emergency fund and contingencies built in our checking account helps.

All the food your daughter cooked looks delicious. She's very smart to recognize that cooking it all at once saves her time (and money) in the long run.

I have gone grocery shopping in April, went over my weekly budget but it'll all even out in the month. Yes, prices HAVE been creeping up, notably eggs. Aldi had them for over $2 a dozen this week with a sign explaining that there was limited supply hence the higher price. Thankfully Save A Lot was running an unadvertised special on them for $0.99 a dozen so I bought 6 dozens! Also the price of the reduced fat crackers I like went up by 40 cents recently, along with other items. It doesn't seem like a lot but it all adds up in the end. Gas prices are starting to come down a little from their high right before Easter but they're still at $2.56 in my neck of the woods and $2.51 in Clermont, I believe. I'm glad we don't live in CA, to be honest. The local politicians want to tack on an additional 5 to 10 cents a gallon tax to pay for road maintenance, but since we don't have state income tax, I suppose that's the way we'll need to pay for it. And we do need the roads maintained!

I hope you enjoy your new office for the last few months of your working life and that your chair gets there today!

    1. Thank you, Nathalie. Yes, I, too, have space in the garage to store the old paperwork and I have a few boxes, there, already. But, there is some concern that I'll leave a ton of stuff for daughter to go through and clear after my death, so I am trying to declutter before I die! :) Although, daughter says it will take her less time to sort through everything, because she's not likely to keep anything; to save myself the stress and she will come in with a shovel and toss it all! :D

Daughter says spending 2 hours (that's how long she says it took for her to cook the food she made, yesterday) on a Sunday is better than having to cook daily or even, every other day. It frees up her weekday evenings. I used to do something similar when she lived at home, but got out of the habit after she left, especially after I got sick.

I wouldn't worry about going over the weekly budget at the beginning of the month - you'll make up for it over the course of the month. Our gas is expensive - we've now moved to the more expensive summer fuel (cleaner due to the smog) and there are lots of added taxes, as well, for road maintenance, etc.

Hope you continue to have a nice break. :)

  4. I can't believe the gas company passed on their losses because of a leak to the customer - cheeky devils.

We've just returned from a week at the van and I'm in the mood for getting the house ship shape and paperwork unfortunately, has to be part of that process. Amy and Thomas are still on holiday for another week so I'm going to do some drawers and wardrobes rather than front of house stuff, which won't look any different while they're here.

Prices are going up over as well. I'm feeling quite happy that our weekly food bill comes in at around £100 a week and includes some cleaning products. That covers breakfast, lunch, dinner and lots of snacks for us all. It works out about £3.60 per day per person which I don't think is too bad.

We treated ourselves to a rare lunch out at the van and for 2 x fish & chips and one bowl of soup it cost nearly £25 so cooking for a week for one person for that amount feels pretty good. xx

    1. Hope you enjoyed your week away, Suzanne. Good idea to clean out the drawers and wardrobes while Amy and Thomas are still on holiday - maybe do their rooms with their help, too?

You are doing very well with your grocery budget! I am not too familiar with prices there, but, $25/person/week for groceries and some cleaning supplies sounds extremely reasonable.

Hope everything is well with you and the family. Enjoy the rest of the holidays!

  5. I don't think my comment made it again! 82 Degrees sounds nice. It is 38 here and snowy. We have gas heat and in the winter our bills (for the exact amount) are $120-150 per month with our house at 72 degrees. Your flowers are pretty. Andrea

    1. Brr, that's cold! Hope it warms up, soon! You must be ready for spring!

Your heating bills sound reasonable. My house is not well insulated and I tend to feel cold. I think, next winter, I might buy a small space heater to heat up the specific room I am in.

  6. Terrific shopping by you and your daughter. I have never heard of sukiyaki ramen and kimchi ramen and broccoflower, spinach, tangerines for $1.00 each is just amazing.

I am afraid I had a complete fail with waiting to go grocery shopping until Thursday. Hubby was out of the bread he likes to make a sandwich and his bread for toast with mold on it! So a quick shop today to replace his bread Pepperidge Farm Whole Wheat $4.29; creek yogurt $3.99; salt free peanuts $3.00; Cantina Tortilla chips $2.67; Lenders plain bagels $1.67; Frozen blueberries $3.99; Mustard potato salad $3.26; cheddar cheese $2.49; 3 lb bag mandarin oranges $5.99; 5 lb bag apples $5.99; total spend $37.49 -

What I do often see a slightly smaller package or box, so another way of increasing the price to the consumer. Often there are cheaper alternatives to what I purchase but can not do so because of hubby and his very low sodium eating.

    1. Thank you, Sandy, although, I believe she might have paid $1.99 for the tangerines. Still, much cheaper than at the grocery store.

In comparison, the ethnic store I went to had cauliflower for $.39/lb, broccoli for $.49/lb. and broccoflower for $.69/lb.

Aw, that's too bad about your husband's bread getting moldy! Yes, a special diet makes it very difficult on the grocery budget, as one must check for the various ingredients, such as low salt, low sugar, low fat, etc. I think you are doing quite well with those prices. The bagels, for example, and the cheese. I rarely buy cheese, so I don't check the prices on them, but according to the grocery ads, 8 oz. package of Kroger brand cheddar was selling for $2.49 this week, but, if you downloaded a digital coupon (for some reason, I am unable to download those digital coupons to my card; even daughter tried and failed) and you shopped between Apr. 5 and 8, you could buy it for $.99! Now that is a good stock up price!

Store brand frozen fruit, 12-16 oz. is on sale for $5.99. Even fresh strawberries at the ethnic store was $3.99/lb., and $2.50/lb. at the Kroger affiliate store. Another Kroger grocery store is selling 2 lb. organic apples for $2.99/bag, but regular apples (small) are $.99/lb.

Don't get me started on the shrinking packages! The companies say their research has shown that people don't object as much when the package price remains the same and they decrease the amount of the contents! Apparently, they don't see it as a price increase! But that is exactly what it is, as we are paying more for less!

  7. How am I to keep from snacking when I see photos of your daughter's cooking? 😋 I think I shall check out that herb and shallot cream cheese I have in the fridge and find a few crackers!

We had a sudden power outage this evening, fortunately just as our supper was all ready. After we finished, DH put on the generator and this time we were smart enough to plug the radio into an outlet that wasn't connected and leave it switched on. Two hours later we heard exactly when power was restored and shut off the generator. Next door kept theirs running and I tried to phone but got a message that the phone wasn't receiving incoming calls. I realized that they probably had cordless like ours, which doesn't function in an outage. Anyway they did shut their generator off fairly soon after.

    1. Ha, ha, Bushlady; hope you enjoyed your cream cheese and crackers! :) Daughter says, if you ignore the muffins, most of the other items are vegetables, so it's OK to snack on them.

Good thing the power outage happened after you had prepared your supper! And you had a generator keep things running until the power came back on. Good idea to plug the radio into a different outlet to know when the power comes back on!

  8. I have noticed in the past that your daughter averages two hours each weekend to fix the whole week's meals. She is extremely organized.

You always do so well with your grocery shopping. Just by comparison shopping between the two stores, you save yourself a lot of money. I went shopping today again, but only went to one store. I wanted more packing boxes, but there were NONE.

As you know, I did my taxes and I ended up owing $300. Because this was my first complete year of living on the new pensions, I had no idea what I should ask to be with held from my pension allowance. Now I know that I can send off the form and ask them to hold roughly $30 a month, which is manageable. I had the savings to pay out this year.

    1. Susan, she says it actually ranges between 2-4 hours, depending on what she is cooking. She only has one large sauté pan, for example, so if she needs to use it more than once, she needs to wait until the first dish is cooked, then, wash it and reuse it. She has a tiny kitchen, so no storage space for more than a few pans. But, if she's baking in the oven, she can make several dishes at one time.

Yes, the comparison shopping really helps. But, sometimes, I choose to shop at one store for convenience and justify the extra costs as time saving, energy saving, etc.

Sorry you could get any boxes! Hope you'll have better luck, next time.

I am glad you had the savings to pay the taxes you owed and to hear that you will be able to have the withholdings increased to cover it for next year. Even $30 less per month can be hard on the budget, but I know you will find ways to manage.
