Still Talking Groceries

This Week's Grocery Ads

This week's grocery ads came in the mail on Tuesday.  Nine different sales flyers, plus I looked up one on-line for one other store I go to on a regular basis.

I no longer look through each and every sales ad.  I toss the flyers from the stores I don't usually go to and keep only the 3 or so from the stores I do go to on a regular basis.

Once again, the Armenian store seems to have the best advertised prices on fresh produce:
cabbage for $.25/lb., green bell peppers, tomatillos, red onions, and beets for $.39/lb., plums, apples, and pears for $.49/lb., and red grapes for $.99/lb.

Grapes are $.99/lb. at another store as well, and that store is closer to my house, but their apples and pears are $.99/lb., and plums are $1.49/lb. And they haven't indicated any prices for their vegetables except for ears of corn and cucumber at $.50, each.

I haven't decided yet, which store I will go to or what I will buy.  I do want to get some milk, grapes, and maybe some bread.

Which store would you choose?

  1. It would depend a lot on how tired I was, but probably the place that had the better prices.

    1. That would be the Armenian store. They seem to have the best sale prices on produce.

  2. I would go to the Armenian store. Those prices are awesome. We never see prices this low. And now with the hurricane having impacted our agriculture so much I doubt that our locally grown produce (beans, squash and others) will be cheap for a while.

    1. The hurricanes in both Texas and Florida will have an impact on the prices of a lot of groceries, won't it? Good old supply and demand, I suppose.

  3. I think you will do fine at the Aremenia store. Those are good prices. Have you considered frozen vegetables? My store has a 16 oz bag this week on offer for .99 - other times it is buy one get one free. I do like you can cook just enough for one or two people. I also love and buy them every week frozen blueberries. Usually have to pay full price for those. I pour a serving out first thing in the morning and by lunch/dinner time perfect with a little plain Greek yogart.

Hope you are well and your mouth is healing nicely.

    1. Sandy, frozen vegetables are $.99 for 12 oz. bags, here. I buy the frozen green peas and frozen corn, but that is about all. However, when I was in Wisconsin, I used to buy green beans when they went on sale in the summer and blanch and freeze them, myself. Or pick wild blackberries and strawberries and freeze them until I had enough to make jam. My daughter buys some frozen fruits for smoothies, but I rarely do so.

  4. The Armenian store sounds good to me. I'd like some plums and pears. I'd also like to try tomatillos. I had to look up what they are and I'm sure I haven't eaten any yet.

I highly recommend good bread, cheese and fruit for your lunchbox. Pears, grapes and apples go exceptionally well with cheese.

    1. I shall buy some plums and pears for you, Jazz, and some tomatillos, too. I like apples and pears with cheese. I haven't tried grapes with cheese. Tomatillos are used in salsa verde, but I am thinking of making a curry with them.

  5. I am actually going to travel further afield this morning. I need dog food, and Walmart has the best price for that. So I am thinking I may drive over to a small town called Napanee where there is a WalMart, Giant Tiger and No-Frills store all relatively close to each other. There are some great bargains to be had.

    1. That sounds like a good idea, Susan. You'd probably be able to stock up on a few things, too (if the budget allows) for later, when winter makes such drives a little more difficult. Looking forward to you sharing your buys with us. :)

    1. They claim they sell at wholesale prices to the public; they always have good sale prices and it is very possible to keep the grocery bills low if you shop only what is on sale that week.
