Extraction on Thursday

108F at 4:30 p.m., on my way to the dentist's

Today, I went to the office in the morning and left at 2:30 p.m.  I came home around 3:30 p.m.  I quickly cooked some rice, sauted some roast chicken and warmed up some of the green beans I had cooked earlier.  Had that for a late lunch/early dinner, because I knew I won't be able to eat anything solid, tonight.  Then, I picked up my friend who had offered to accompany me to the dentist's (just in case there were complications; earlier, one of my cousins had offered to go with me, but she was unable to).

The appointment went well enough, all things considered.  The  dentist pulled out the tooth, assisted by two assistants and they put in a stitch or two.  The whole procedure took about 35 to 40 minutes.
My friend did a little shopping (the dental clinic is in a mini mall with a grocery store, dollar store, several fast food places, a dress shop and other establishments) while I was having my extraction, but she was back by the time I emerged from inside.  I invited her home, but she chose to go home, directly.  So, I dropped her off and came home.

After two hours, I took 2 Tylenols (I wasn't in a lot of pain, but I wanted to take the pills before I felt too much pain) and changed the gauze I was to keep in my mouth to stem the bleeding.  It has been almost four hours since my extraction, but I am still bleeding.  I stopped taking the low dose aspirin I had been taking about two months, now (ever since I first went to the dentist's), but I tend to bleed a lot.

It has been a rather warm day, today.  Tomorrow is also supposed to be a warm day and the weekend, too.  When my gardener friend comes to do the garden, I will ask him to set up the air conditioner for me.

I have taken the day off from work, tomorrow, in order to recover from the extraction (and just in case I need to go back to the dentist's, for whatever reason).

I have been told to take only cold drinks today and not to take a warm shower!  I am sipping on a meal replacement drink as I type this.  Tomorrow, I am supposed to rinse with warm salt water.  I suppose it will be okay to drink some soup, tomorrow.  I have a follow-up appointment to have the stitches taken out, next week.

Today, I am grateful for:
- The dental appointment went off well
- My friend accompanied me to the dentist's
- My supervisor was fine with me taking tomorrow off
- I am not in a lot of pain
- It has cooled off considerably in the evening

My papaya seeds have started to sprout:

Papaya Seedlings

There is an apple seed that is also sprouting in the same pot.

And my avocado seed is about ready to be potted up:

There is a little sprout that is making its appearance:

Friday's To Do List (I am not making a big long to do list - all depends on how I will feel)
- Do the dishes
- Unpick and resew my blouse
- Have gardener friend set up the window a/c unit
- Water the indoor plants
- Repot the papaya seedlings in a bigger pot (too hot to plant them outside!)
- Pot up the avocado seedling

How was your Thursday?

    1. Thank you, Live and Learn. Only one tooth was extracted, yesterday. I am glad, because one at a time is all I can handled!

  2. I'm so glad you've finally been able to go through with your dental work and everything seems to be fine. I hope once it's all healed it will be a end to your discomfort.
Make sure you rest up when you can and don't overdo things. X

    1. Thank you, Jules. I have taken the day off work and I am taking it easy. I look a bit like a chipmunk because the right side of my jaw is swollen, but that will go down, eventually.

  3. I am happy for you that the extraction went well, and you have taken today off as time to heal and relax. You will need to get your strength back to "continue the fight" next week. Ha.

    1. Thank you, Susan. That's why I decided to take a day of sick leave, rather than work from home. Just wanted to rest and relax.

  4. Good to hear that you finally had that rogue tooth extracted and survived! I hope that the gum will heal well and that you will soon be able to forget the whole thing.

Your plants look healthy. I haven't grown an avocado pit for years. We put in a row of radishes in the garden on Saturday and are pleased to see that they are now showing up. I have an unruly patch of cilantro plants growing from some saved seed that I just scattered weeks ago. It is one of my favourite herbs and so expensive to buy a bunch locally, so worth growing. I must get into the habit of saving herbs. I dried some thyme from the yard a while ago because I didn't have any, and I wondered why I never did that in the past. I believe there are many ways to save herbs for winter use.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. I still have at least 2 more teeth to be attended to - one will be another extraction, the other might be a filling. I look a bit like a chipmunk, right now, with a swollen cheek, but not in a lot of pain, so that is good.

Glad to hear your radishes are coming up! You'll be harvesting them in just a few weeks. Drying the herbs is a good way to save them and they last a long time. So is chopping them up and freezing them with some water in ice cube trays. Once frozen, you can pop them out and store in freezer bags and just add to soups and stews, etc. I chopped some parsley and just froze it in little bags, without any additional water, and that worked out well, too.

  5. Good to hear a friend went with you and that one of the bad teeth is out and you are on the road to recovery.

Do hope by the time you read this your gardener friend has managed to put in your window A/C and you have a cool place to sit.

It is terribly hot here. We are certainly in the dog days of summer. Picked our first ripe small tomato today. Will have to wait for others to ripen up. Have just made a pasta salad to have cold with our salmon for dinner.

    Take care.

    1. Thank you, Sandy. I was glad my friend was there, just in case anything happened! LOL. Recovery is a bit slow, but I'll be OK.

A/C is not up, yet, as he usually comes later in the evening to do the garden. It isn't too bad - I have the fan on and I am sitting in the cooler living room (it won't get hot here until later in the afternoon, when the sun comes through the west-facing windows).

I hope you are able to keep cool. If you have a/c, please put it on! That first ripe tomato is special, isn't it? Salmon and pasta salad sounds good! I was told to avoid hot and spicy food, after the extraction! I laughed to myself, as most of my food tend to be spicy and hot!

  6. The picture of your car dashboard reminded me that I meant to post this article from Lifehacker on my blog: Why Your Car Thermometer Is So Bad at Telling the Temperature I didn't know that either.

I'm glad you finally got that tooth out! 2 months!!! You ARE a saint :)

Can you please explain how you succeeded in growing papaya seedlings? I have a papaya in my fridge right now and I'd love to grow my own papayas! Did you just plant a couple of seeds in soil? Or did you do anything else? Were they seeds from the papaya that the colleague gave you? I love your sprouting avocado as well. I was able to grow a seedling from one several years ago but the little tree died before I could plant it. I tried it again several times after that but the pits never even germinated :( I hope you have a good weekend, Bless.

    1. That's an interesting article, Nathalie. This is the first car I've had that gives the outside temperature, and I tend to get all excited about it! I think the readings tend to be accurate because, occasionally, I compare it's reading to the temperature readings I see posted on various displays around town - the school marquee on my way to the office, the bank building, etc. - and the readings tend to match. The temperature I showed in the picture, by the way, was taken soon after I pulled the car out of the garage, while I was still in my driveway, before I actually even drove anywhere.

Today, according to the weather report, we were 108F again.

I just put a few of the papaya seeds in the soil and watered it. They were seeds from a papaya I bought; the avocado seedling is from the avocado my colleague gave. Of course it is too hot, right now, to transplant the seedlings outside, but I will pot them up in a bigger pot over the weekend, I think.

  7. I am SO glad your appointment went well. I hope you don't feel too much pain with it. The extractions I've had went better than I imagined (it's always like that with any dentist thing for me lol). Hope you get some relaxing in over the weekend.

    1. Thanks Sharon. There isn't a lot of pain and the Tylenol is keeping it under control. Yes, dental visits are always a bit traumatic for me, too!

  8. My sweet friend, I am so glad you were able to get the first of the extractions done and I am praying that the bleeding stopped after you wrote this post. Praying that you heal quickly.

I hope your papaya starts will give you some glorious papayas within the next few years. Papaya is one of my favorite fruits but I can't seem to find good ones here. They have to pick them when they are not fully ripe to ship them so they are rather dry and bland tasting. Oh how I miss the sweet juicy papayas of my childhood. :)

    1. Thank you, Debbie. The bleeding continued till today, but it seems to have stopped, now.

Oh, I remember the papayas from my childhood, too, Debbie. It was a different variety of papaya than what is available in the market here, but they were picked when very ripe and were so sweet! These papayas do tend to taste bland, but they are better than nothing. I will need to find a spot where they will grow without getting scorched for the summer and frost bitten in the winter, but, hopefully, they'll grow and produce a papaya or two!

  9. I am so glad that your dental appointment went well! I hope that you are able to rest as much as you need for your recovery.

I am inspired to try and root an avocado seed the next time I have some on hand. I think they would be able to planted outside and it would be so fabulous to have home grown avocados one day!
