Tuesday

The funeral of a family friend who died a week or so ago was held today.  At first, I thought I will not attend the funeral and go to the office, instead, because I had taken yesterday off to be with daughter and take her to the airport and will be taking tomorrow off to go to the dentist's.  But this morning, I changed my mind and decided to attend the funeral, after all.  I called the office and spoke to my supervisor and took the day off, explaining it was to attend a family friend's funeral.  My supervisor was very understanding.

Then, I called my cousin to ask if she was going and, if so, could she give me a ride.  She was going with her daughter and she said they could give me a ride.  The funeral was starting at 11:00 a.m. and cousin said she was leaving at 10:00 a.m.  I said I'll be ready.  I had a cup of coffee, took a shower, and got dressed.  I was ready and waiting when she called to say she was leaving the house.  She and her daughter picked me up and I rode with them to the funeral and back.

There was a service in the chapel attached to the mortuary, followed by the burial.  I heard two new-to-me hymns, today.  One of them was "Shepherd me, O God", which I really liked.  The other one was sung to the tune of Danny Boy, but I don't know the name of the hymn and I don't remember what the words were.  Afterwards, there was a catered buffet lunch in the reception room of the mortuary.   Towards the end of the lunch, the fire alarm went off!  It was a false alarm, but we had to evacuate the reception room and my cousin suggested it was a good time to leave, so we left.  I got back home a little after 2:00 p.m.

The afternoon was hot!  I sat under the fan and watched some TV and read blogs, etc.  Later in the evening, after it had cooled off a bit, I brought the trash cans in, watered the back garden, put away the washed dishes from yesterday, and started cleaning the bathrooms.

The dentist's office called to confirm tomorrow's appointment and one of my friends called to wish me luck at tomorrow's appointment!

Later in the evening, I video chatted with my daughter.  She said it was only 59F up there, this morning, when she left to go to the office!  A far cry from our 100+F weather!

Today, I am grateful for:
- Being able to take time off from work to attend the funeral
- Cousin and her daughter giving me a ride to the funeral and back
- Seeing another cousin and some friends at the funeral
- The fire alarm going off was a false alarm and not a real fire
- Video chatting with my daughter

  1. It is difficult but necessary when we to go to funerals for our friends.
Other than the extreme heat it sounds like you had a good afternoon. It has been remarkably pleasant here and I am loving it after all the rain and storms.

  3. I hope you get some answers to questions you still have regarding your dentist.

I hope you have a fan set up in the bathroom while you are cleaning. Being in an enclosed space during a heat wave is definitely not a FUN chore. Cleaning bathrooms at the best of times is not a fun chore. *laugh*

    1. Thank you, Susan. I hope to get some answers, too.

Actually, that's a very good idea to have a fan set up while I'm cleaning the bathrooms. Especially the little bathroom daughter and guests use, which hasn't a window. Thank you for the suggestion!

  4. I do hope the dental visit went well. I'm sure you were glad that you did go to the funeral after all, to honour your family friend. I looked up "Shepherd me, O God", it is beautiful. I may have heard it once before. I also looked up to see which hymn was likely to be the one sung to "Danny Boy" and decided that it must be "O Loving God" (we send your son/daughter home to You) which we sometimes sing in the funeral choir.
We are having the strangest summer. It is quite cool, around 59°F at night and when we get up, then it gets up to around 70°F in the day, which is not exactly balmy. Today it went up to 77°F and then a storm blew in and it went back down to 70°F. Of course we are getting the rain that you really need and our farmers are in trouble with wet fields! The blueberries are almost non-existent but I found a few lovely wild strawberries in the yard. I checked the milkweed for monarch larvae but soon gave up as the mosquitoes are so bad this year. I've seen two adult monarch butterflies and found 2 caterpillars but that is all.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady, for looking up the hymn for me. My mother taught me yet another song set to the tune of Danny Boy, with the words, "I would be true for there are those who trust me".

You are definitely having a very cool summer! Daughter too, said it was only 59F in the mornings in Berkeley! A far cry from our triple digit temperatures! She prefers the warmer weather, so she's unhappy that it is so cool up there!

    1. Thank you, Nathalie. I've known her and her family for just over 40 years - ever since I came to California (although she's originally from Sri Lanka). The dental appointment was a non-event, but I'll write about that in my blog post. :)

    1. Thank you, Judy. The dentist visit was a bit of a non-event as he didn't do anything today. But, he has agreed to proceed with the extractions, first, so I have another appointment for next week!

  7. Sorry for the loss of your friend and your supervisor was understanding about you not going to work. The words are indeed lovely to the hymn "Shepherd me, O God" and I immediately thought of Psalm 23 which always brings me comfort, joy and hope.

Laundry on the line and will quickly dry in the warm sunshine. Our cool spell is over and back to central A/C.

    1. Thank you, Sandy. She was a lovely person, who didn't have a very easy life, but who was always cheerful and never grumbled.

Hope you manage to stay cool now that it has turned warm again. I'm so glad you have a/c.

  8. I'm very sorry to hear about your friend Bless. Unfortunately, I think we will be attending a funeral very soon. My uncle collapsed at weekend with a clot on his brain and there is nothing to be done, it is just a matter of time. The awful thing is it could be days or weeks which is very hard for my Aunty. They are both in their 80's. The really sad thing is their only son has cancer and he can't go and visit his Dad due to the risk of infection. It's just such a sad time for them but as is often the case it puts everything into perspective. xx
