Surprise Breakfast on Saturday

On Saturday morning, I woke up to the sound of daughter moving around in the kitchen.  At first, I thought she was making her coffee.  Then, I thought that maybe she was making herself some oatmeal.  When I went to the kitchen to see what she was doing, this is what I saw:

Breakfast!
She was brewing my tea and making me breakfast as a surprise!  Scrambled eggs and pancakes.  She said she would have fried bacon, too, except she didn't know if I had any and if so, where it was kept (I had a package in the freezer).  She said she thought that if she was going to spend the day helping her friend prepare for his party, then, she could at least make me breakfast!  Of course, she left me the dishes to do, as she hates doing the dishes!  But that was fine with me, as I don't mind doing the dishes and, in any case, I was planning to run the dishwasher, today.

Daughter left shortly after breakfast.  Her friend came to pick her up and they picked up another friend who was going to do the cooking and then they were going grocery shopping and so forth.

I spent a relaxed morning watching some TV shows now that the TV is working again.  I enjoy the Saturday morning shows on the public television channels - quilting, knitting and crochet, sewing, cooking, etc.

Later, I did a load of laundry and ran the dishwasher.  Then, I attached new elastic to the waistband of one of my skirts.  I was getting ready to alter the waistband of another skirt, as well, but then, I noticed that there was a tear in the fabric of the skirt.  I could have darned it, but it was an old skirt and I decided to toss it, instead.

I also renewed a pillow.  I had two small pillows, bought a couple of years ago, which had an inner covering that had deteriorated.  I pulled the fiberfill out of both pillows, stuffed it all into an old pillowcase, and sewed the opening closed to make myself one new pillow:

Later, I watered the front garden.   These pictures were taken a couple of days ago:

After that, I cooked rice, green beans, and a meatball curry using some of the frozen meatballs I had bought earlier.  Half an apple for dessert.

Daughter came home later in the evening and we chatted for a bit before she went to bed.  I should be going to bed, too, as soon as I've finished this post and cleaned the litter box.

On Saturday, I was grateful for:
- Daughter cooking me a surprise breakfast
- Daughter is able to spend the weekend doing fun things with her friends
- Machines that do the work for us - washing machines, dishwashers, sewing machines, etc.
- Cooking and sewing shows on TV
- Phone calls from friends and aunt

How was your Saturday?  Have you woken up to a surprise breakfast being cooked for you?

  1. Lucky you! I would love to have a surprise breakfast cooked for me and Greg just mentioned wanting to go to his favorite breakfast place not just 2 minutes before I read your post, but then just after he had gotten me excited about it, he changed his mind and is going to go drink MY coffee and make himself some PB toast and use some of MY strawberries (LOL) so I'm quite peeved now :) And he'll also leave the dishes for me to do. Oh well, what's another plate added to the pile that I have to wash today anyway...

It sounds like you had a lovely and relaxing Saturday, I hope today is the same!

    1. Oh, but that was not so nice of Greg to get your hopes up about going out for breakfast and then, not only changing his mind but also helping himself to your coffee and your strawberries! But you said they were starting to spoil (the strawberries), so, I guess it's a good thing he's helping you to eat them up.

It was a good day, yesterday, because I was able to get some sewing done. Today, I think I might go out to lunch with a friend, so that will be nice, too. :)

  2. That was so sweet of your daughter to surprise you with a lovely breakfast.

We were at DS for breakfast on Saturday. He is a great cook and he made a big pan of scrambled eggs with lots of goodies in it, like mushrooms, chopped cooked bacon, peppers. DDIL added small bowls of strawberries to each place.
DGD turned 11 the other day and celebrated with a party while we were there. 5 of her friends arrived and I remembered all of their names, I think they are all even louder and busier than when they were little! It was a fun party as they all made pizza cones to eat and then stirred up homemade icecream in bowls set in ice and salt. DS also supplied a bowl of dry ice which delighted them when all the vapour poured out into the air!
We've been to a fundraising Strawberry Tea today, in the rain. Fortunately there was plenty of room to set up tables under cover. Usually it is a more leisurely outdoor event, but lots of people were coming and enjoying it anyway.

    1. Bushlady, please wish your granddaughter a happy belated birthday from me. Sounds like she enjoyed a lovely party with her friends. The Strawberry Tea sounds lovely, too, even in the rain. You couldn't send some of that rain down here, could you? 108F and counting!

  3. How lovely to wake up to hot brewed tea, scrambled eggs and pancakes. You have a most thoughtful daughter.

Like you I am a big fan of PBS - some of the very best programs.

    Your gladioli is beautiful.

    1. It was a very lovely surprise, Sandy. :) Apart from news and special events like the Olympics, I rarely watch anything on the regular networks. I used to watch Dancing with the Stars, especially when it first came out and daughter watched it with me, but I haven't bothered to watch the last couple of seasons. But there are programs on PBS that I will watch over and over again. :)

Thank you, it's the first gladioli to bloom, this year. The garden isn't doing too well because it is so hot and dry, even though I am keeping up with regular watering.

  4. It's so nice to read about the close relationship you and your daughter have. Although I feel close to my sons, I just don't think it's the same. However, I will say my son fixed breakfast for his father and the rest of us last week for Father's Day.

    1. Well, you see, that's the one thing my daughter won't do - fix breakfast on Mother's day, because she says it's the expected thing to do. :D I think she fixed me b'fast in bed once, for Mother's day and that was all! But it doesn't matter - when it really counted, such as when I was undergoing chemo, she made the effort to come down and be there for me every time I had a treatment.

Maybe girls have a different type of close relationship with their mothers? Or, perhaps, it is because it's just the two of us. She's my only child and I am, to all intents and purposes, her only parent.

    2. Although there are exceptions, there is definitely a difference between boys and girls. Generally, girls are more talkative than boys and share more feeling type things. This is true among all of my friends who have boys. And the fact that there's just the two of you, I'm sure, makes a big difference. And you must have done something right, also.

    3. Yes, my daughter does tell me a lot about her day's experiences, etc. Always did. Not too much about her feelings, though; I probably talk about my feelings more than she does. And thank you; I like to think I did something right. :)

    1. Thank you, Debra. She is a very sweet girl, if I say so myself. :) I have never tried to be anything other than her parent, but she has always claimed that I am also her best friend.

    1. Thank you, Judy. It was a lovely surprise. :) I haven't seen as much of her this weekend as I would have liked because she's been hanging out with her friends, but that's OK. She doesn't see them that often because she's away and now, some of her friends will be moving out of state, as well.

  7. What a lovely thing for daughter to do. I know what it's like when you're the one that does all the cooking, it really is appreciated when somebody else makes a meal for you. xx

  8. What a wonderful gesture to make breakfast for you. It is the unexpected that makes it so wonderful. It is something that we do for ourselves or others and not give any thought to it, but when someone does it for us, it makes us feel so special. My husband would very occasionally bring me breakfast in bed, draw a bath for me with bubble bath and candles, or show up at work at lunchtime to take me on a picnic that he prepared. You could count on one hand the times he did this for me over the course of 46 years. But that was the point. It was totally unexpected. Like your daughter, he never would do those things because it was the proper thing to do. He wouldn't send me a bouquet of flowers for my birthday. He would show up unexpectedly with a single rose at the end of a most stressful day. Your daughter must be the light of your life.
