June Grocery Shopping - Week 3

June 17 Groceries

I needed milk, coffee creamer, bananas, and bread; in addition, I wanted to get oil and eggs if they were on sale.   So, after I put gas to the car ($30 worth at $2.75/gal.), I went to the grocery store across the street from the gas station.

I bought:

1/2 gal. milk = $1.99
32 oz. coffee creamer = $1.99
1 doz. eggs = $.99
1 33 fl. oz. (1 liter) bottle oil = $1.79
10 count sourdough English muffins = $.49
 1 cassava/manioc/yuca root @ $.99/lb = $.84
1/2 lb. green beans @ $1.99/lb = $1.05
3 bananas @ $.59/lb = $.53
Total = $9.6.7

Once I brought them home and took a picture, it didn't take long for them to be closely inspected:

"What did you buy, Mummy?"

I thought the English muffins will make a nice change from regular bread.  The manioc is for Sunday brunch.  The green beans looked very fresh and tender, so I bought some.  I didn't buy more vegetables because I still have the cabbage I bought earlier and the zucchini I picked from the garden, plus carrots, etc.

Just three bananas, because they get ripe too quickly in our heat and I don't like very ripe bananas.  I still have half a papaya, 1 avocado, 1 or 2 kiwis,  the last of the oranges from my tree and some apples, as well, so I don't need a lot of fruit, this week.

I still have 6 eggs, but they'll get used up quickly if I bake this weekend, and I am thinking of making some banana bread with the three overripe bananas I have.  Same for the oil - I still have some in my currently opened bottle, but it needs to be used soon and I'll probably use it up to make the banana bread.

6/17 Grocery Receipt

Grocery spending in June = $7.93 (Week 1) + $14.17 (Week 2) + $9.67 (Week 3)  = $31.77
Amount left in June grocery budget = $75 - $31.77 = $43.23

I might go grocery shopping again, a bit later, this week, as my daughter will be coming home at the end of the week.  But I have more than half the month's grocery budget left for the rest of the month and that will work out well, I think.

Have you gone grocery shopping yet, this week?   How is your grocery budget for June coming along?

  1. What an excellent price on those English muffins!

How do you cook your manioc? My stepdad is from Martinique and he brought us some one year and I think we ate it mashed, like potatoes. I didn't dislike it but I don't remember loving it either. It was a long time ago!

My grocery budget has been blown this week, I've bought lots of meat on clearance but also lots of produce. Oh well, now I don't have to buy meat for a while at least!

    1. The English muffins were reduced in price because they were near their sell by date. But that doesn't matter to me - they'll be OK for a few more days after that, and I can always freeze some of them for later, too.

I peel and boil the manioc and eat it with grated coconut or a spicy onion relish. You could eat it plain, too - it will be a little like eating a rather starchy boiled potato. I've copied a link to a post I did which has pictures of how to peel and cook it:

I'm glad you took the opportunity to stock up when there was a good sale; sometimes, one has to do that. It's one reason why I don't worry about keeping to a weekly limit - just a monthly budget. Even then, I go over, on occasion (like in May, when I spent nearly 1/3 of the budget on coffee for daughter).

  2. I ended up going grocery shopping after the church service this morning. I hope with what I got today to not go again until a week from Monday. My aim is to keep trying to go one week and one day later gradually getting back to my usual midweek shop either on Wednesday or Thursday which are relatively slow days of the week at the store. We have plenty in the cupboards and freezer. No real bargains on offer this week and I always have to buy the stuff hubby can eat due to his restricted physician heart plan. Oh well it is what it is.

You as usual have done marvelously well. Exciting that your daughter is coming home for a visit.

    1. I, too, prefer to shop on a week day when the shops are not as crowded and busy, if I can. But, it seems I end up shopping mostly on the weekend, especially now that I've started going back to the office during the work week. I don't like to shop after work, all that much.

Shopping while being mindful of a special diet can be difficult. So many restrictions on what can be eaten and what has to be avoided. Those special items very rarely go on sale, do they?

Yes, I am looking forward to seeing daughter, again. It'll be another short visit - she'll come down Thursday night, Friday will be spent with me, Saturday will be spent with her friends, and she flies back Sunday afternoon, I believe.

  3. A cat has to be in the know and in charge always, don't they? Dancer seems to be no exception.

  4. I don't think I have been to the store but twice so far this June. Uninspired is my theme for the month.

    1. There are some months like that, aren't there? Especially when it is hot. I find myself not wanting to cook much, this month. Or, I cook, but don't feel like eating it.

  5. I overspent my household budget already, so no shopping yet since before my daughter arrived with the two grand kids. I haven't needed to go yet, but I will be needing some milk, maybe bread, and eggs because I did some baking on the weekend. Otherwise, I don't need to buy anything until July. I will give a final report at the end of the month.

    1. It's hard to stay within budget when children and grandchildren visit, isn't it? We want to buy treats and spoil them. I'm sure you'll do just fine, though, even if you go over by a bit. When you do go over budget, how do you account for it? Do you carry it over to the next month and deduct the overage from July's budget or do you somehow absorb it (withdraw from savings, for example, or cover it with money still left in another budget category)? I've done it both ways, in the past. Looking forward to seeing your report at the end of the month. Hope you have a good rest of the month.

    2. This month's grocery budget will probably be covered by money left over from other budgets. I don't think I reported this month that my Hydro bill was exceptional....just over $100. Turning off the surge protectors for my TV and computer components really paid off. Yay me! Anyways, at the end of the month I will be able to report whether or not I go into July with a reduced household budget, which is what I normally do.

    3. That's excellent news about your Hydro bill! Well done!

  6. Jeff and I picked up a few things on Friday. We did not need a whole lot of food items, but we did stock up on 2 large 12 packs of double rolls of toilet paper and also on tissues.

    1. Sounds like you are doing very well with your grocery shopping, Debbie. I don't include the TP and other items in my grocery budget, but they are essentials to be stocked up from time to time, aren't they?

I too, don't like over ripe bananas. I made a loaf of zucchini bread today.. [I had 2 overripe bananas, and didn't even think about using them.. wish I had.ha]
Our garden is producing so much squash right now.. trying to find ways to use them.lol
    Have a great day.

    1. Zucchini bread is my favorite way to use zucchini. I have 3 squash plants and I think that is plenty for me! Hope you have a lovely week, Judy. Take care.
