Darn It Again!

Yesterday, I noticed that there was a small hole in the blue cardigan I had worn to the office:

Blurry Picture of the Hole

The cardigan was a gift from an aunt three Christmases ago.  It is 100% merino wool and I thought I should try to repair it and darn the hole:

Another Look at the Hole

I gathered the items I'd need, including the boxes of embroidery thread and the one reel of navy thread and kept them on the sofa to get my other pair of glasses that I use for sewing.  I should have known.  This is what I found when I came back with the glasses:

Dancer on Top of Things, as Usual

Be careful, Dancer, there's a needle stuck on that reel of thread next to you!

I checked all the blue embroidery thread I had against the cardigan and the reel thread seemed to be the closest in color; everything else was a lighter blue.  So, I chose to darn with the reel thread.

Choice of Thread
Of course, while I was selecting my thread, Dancer was, as usual, helping!

"Blue thread, Mummy?"

"I think this is blue"

"Yes, definitely blue!"

"This one, Mummy!  I found it for you!"

"Oh, wrong shade of blue?  You don't need it, Mummy?  OK, Dancer play with it, then!"

Dancer found a new toy!

I rescued my embroidery thread from him and finished darning the cardigan.

Darning: Right Side

It's noticeable to me because I know where to look for it, but I am hoping it won't be too noticeable when I wear it (it's at the back, a little below the shoulder; if I still had my long hair, it would have been covered by the hair).

In the meantime, someone was pouting behind the sofa:

Sulky Kitty

"Why'd you take away my thread, Mummy?  I was having such a good time with it!"

Dancer Feeling Sad
Those paws tucked under him is his version of crossing his arms!  Eventually, he scratched side of the sofa in revenge and moved on to the sofa to nap.

Sleepy Kitty

Or, maybe not?

"I'm not sleeping, I'm sulking!"
Oh, OK, Dancer, you have a good sulk.  I'll talk to you when you are feeling better.

And a few minutes later, we got distracted by a bird that flew into the window:

"Where Are You, Bird?"

  1. Ha ha! He was sulking for sure :) He's so "darn" cute, Bless. I'm sure the fix isn't that noticeable, by the way and, really, what if it is?

    1. Yes, he is cute, isn't he?

Good question - what does it matter if the mending is noticeable? I don't know; somehow, I don't think it is quite the done thing to wear a visibly mended garment to the office! :)

  2. I darn things all the time to extend the life of them. I think it is only noticeable to you, since you know it was darned!

    1. Anne, you are probably right - no one else will notice. :)

  3. I think Dancer did a great job of assisting you and covered the hole perfectly. I wish Mog would play with embroidery thread instead of bringing me mice every day!
You've done a neat job there Bless. It will only be noticeable to you because you know it's there. X

    1. LOL, Mog is hunting and providing for her family! Dancer is an indoor cat, but he occasionally kills any bugs and insects that come in! Thanks, Jules, I think the darning won't be too noticeable.

  4. Cats are every so "helpful", aren't they? I enjoyed your pictures of Dancer playing. :)

    1. Yes, indeed! My mother used to always say that quote. That was the other post title I was thinking of! He is a sweet kitty and most helpful! :)

  6. You did a great job of darning the sweater. Better to have mended it than put it back in the drawer and never worn again. Dancer seems quite a bit more attached to you lately. Is that because you have returned to work?

    1. Thank you, Susan. Dancer does routine checks on me when I am at home. I think he does that to reassure himself that I am around!

  7. :) Oh Dancer...such a good helper! His mummy did a great job darning the hole in the sweater too! ;)

    1. Thank you, Debbie. He had such a good time with the thread that now I feel I should have let him keep it! Maybe I'll give it back to him - it'll be a relatively inexpensive cat toy.

  8. Dancer does make me smile - he's literally your shadow. I think the darning is an excellent job. I doubt anybody would notice it, it's not really that obvious even on a close up photo. xx

    1. That he is, Suzanne. He likes to be where I am when I'm at home - in fact, he's sleeping on the top of his cat "tree" which is next to my chair as I type this!

Thank you, the hole I darned is fairly small, so, I don't think it will be noticeable. I don't know why I should mind if anyone should notice it; mending things is frugal and environmentally good, but, there it is - there seems to be a stigma of poverty attached to it, I guess.

    1. Thank you, Judy. Yes, he's always close to me, these days. When daughter is home, though, he's her cat!
