Darn and Darned!

I did a load of laundry, yesterday, and hung it up overnight to dry.  Today, I put away the dried laundry.  While I was sorting and pairing my socks, I saw this:

Holey Sock!

Another look:

Another Look at the Hole
The second sock is not as bad, but not much better:

Second Sock

My first thought was, "Darn".

So, I did!

All Sewn Up!

The second sock:
Darned!
I know, not too many people darn their socks anymore, and I probably should have tossed this pair out.  I do have other socks including two new pairs still in the package, and socks aren't all that expensive.  But, I thought, why not darn and extend their use a little longer?

Oh, did you think I meant something else from the title of this post?  :D  Friends who know me well know that I don't generally swear.  Not even what some might consider to be a relatively mild oath.  But I couldn't resist!  I do love a pun!

  1. A nice neat job Bless. I often darn my socks now. Once I would have easily thrown them away and bought new ones but it seems so wasteful. X

    1. Thanks, Jules. Nice to know someone else who darns her socks! I am not sure how well the socks will hold up in the next wash, but I'll be able to get at least another wear out of them. If they tear again, then, I'll tie a bit of catnip in them and give to Dancer to play with.

  2. I love a pun, too. :) I don't know how to darn, but it seems that when I get a hole in the toe of my sock, other parts are starting to wear, also. You have a good idea to put a bit of catnip in a sock for Dancer. I have some catnip I could use for just that purpose and I think my cats would really enjoy it.

    1. I tend to wear socks to bed except at the height of summer, so these mended socks can be kept for that purpose. I'm sure your cats would enjoy playing with a catnip sock. Dancer bites through them within a few days and then I toss them, but he has fun while they last.

  3. Growing up Bless my grandmother always came over each week for Sunday dinner which was always served at 1:30 pm to allow the men folk to get back from the Pub! Grandma rode her bicycle over to our house often the front basket was full of goodness knows what. Grandma would sit by the fire and darn socks one after the other. Just the way it was in the years following the war. Waste not want not.

You did a very nice job.

    1. Thank you, Sandy. Your grandmother sounds like she was a very practical and frugal lady. :)

  4. I've darned socks for years but am starting to get to the point where I don't want to do it any more. Maybe I'm just to old to "give a darn" if you will pardon the expression.

    1. Well, I'll be darned! :D

Yes, I guess it gets to a point where it is easier to just buy new socks! Maybe buy a packet of new socks once a year (or every 6 months) and toss the old?

  5. I can remember my nanna darning socks when I was little. Your darning is very neat. Mine would look more like blanket stitches which is why I probably just throw socks out and buy new ones! xx

    1. I wonder if my granny darned any socks. I know my mother didn't. But I had an aunt who used to knit socks, with a type of pearlized cotton thread; she'd make me fancy ones with flowers embroidered on the inside of the cuff such that they showed on the right side when you folded the cuff over.

  6. I learned to darn socks too but have been having trouble finding the right kind of yard to do it with recently. Where do you find your's?

    1. Debbie, I am afraid I just used regular sewing thread and more or less wove it in and out a few times and sewed the torn edges together.

  8. I tend to stitch my socks too, some because I really like them and some because if the sock is generally in good condition apart from the one hole, it seems wasteful to throw it away. However I have noticed that after being mended once, socks generally tend to deteriorate quite quickly. I currently have two pairs which don't have holes, but they have become really loose because the elastic (not just the top elastic) has gone slack. I keep thinking I will wear them once more and throw them away but somehow they keep going back in the wash and arriving back in my drawer! It's ridiculous that I don't just bin them - they are so uncomfortable!!

    1. Oh, I am so guilty of saying, "I'll wear it one more time and then toss it" and not follow up! Once it is washed, then, of course, I have to wear it one more time! :D But, do yourself a favor and toss those uncomfortable socks (says the person who has one single stretched sock in her sock drawer - not even a pair, mind you, just one! Keeping it to make a catnip toy for Dancer - that's what I do with old socks - pour a bit of dried catnip into the toe, tie up the sock and he just goes nuts!) :D
