Fretful Wednesday

Woke up late, this morning, feeling tired.  Called my supervisor and asked if I could work from home, today, and she said yes.  Daughter texted to say she had emailed her supervisor and taken a day of sick leave as she was feeling ill with her cold and cough.

However, she couldn't rest and relax as the exterminator was coming to spray her apartment for roaches.  Apparently, the apartment above hers is also having roaches and another apartment in the building, as well.  Daughter has been trying to get rid of the roaches for almost a month now, and this is the third time the exterminator has been to spray, plus she's been spraying, as well.  This is the first time she's had to deal with roaches and she is thoroughly disgusted and put off by the whole thing!  The exterminator was supposed to come between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., but he didn't come until after 5:00 p.m.  She had been told by the apartment management that she'd need to be out of her apartment for 4 hours after the spraying.  It wasn't a problem during the earlier sprayings because she had been at work.

Today, when the exterminator didn't come until 5:00 p.m., she was fretting about where she could go to wait for 4 hours, until 9:00 p.m.  If she had been feeling well, it wouldn't have been such an issue, I think.  But, being ill and totally turned off by the roach situation, she was being peevish. Fortunately, the exterminator told her that she could return to the apartment in 1 hour, today, so she waited in the lounge until 6:30 p.m. and went back to her unit.   But it was a good thing I was home because she was on the phone with me practically the whole day as she was so stressed by the whole situation.  She was close to tears and saying she just wanted to be able to cuddle close to me and hug me.  I offered to come up for the weekend to be with her, but she's sick and doesn't want to get me sick, so I can't be with her until she's well.

In between comforting her, I did my office work from home and a few of my household tasks.  I washed the dishes, did a load of laundry, did some paperwork (although not as much as I should have and wanted to), and I watered the indoor plants.  I didn't hear from the pharmacy about my prescription, so I need to check with them, tomorrow.

Wednesday's To Do List:
- Go to the office - WORKED FROM HOME
- Pharmacy to pick up antibiotic if ready - Waiting to hear from them
- A load of laundry - DONE
- Paperwork - DID SOME
- Do dishes - DONE
- Clean the litter box -DONE
- Water the indoor plants - DONE

I did almost all the things on my to do list, yet, I feel it wasn't as productive a day as I would have liked and I feel slightly frustrated by that.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Being able to work from home
- Being available for my daughter to call during the day
- A working washing machine
- Indoor drying racks
- Exterminators

Thursday's To Do List:
- Lab test in the morning
- Go to the office afterwards
- Dr's appt. in the afternoon
- Water the back garden
- More paperwork
- Put away laundry
- Put away washed dishes

How was your Wednesday?  What have you planned for Thursday?

  1. Oh your poor daughter. Waiting for a service person when you don't feel well is awful. Glad she could sit in the lobby and call you. Of course as a mother you feel absolutely useless and if you are like me you kept thinking about her off and on all night. I always turn to prayer for help and comfort. Hope you hear daughter is better today.

    1. Thanks, Sandy. She was just not feeling well and didn't really want to deal with any of it, yesterday! I made several suggestions as to where to wait out the spraying and she found fault with each and every one of them, because she was sick and peevish. I realize that all she wanted to do was vent and when that happens, she just wants me to listen and make sympathetic noises, not necessarily jump in with solutions to her problems! But that is hard for me; my personality is such that, if you tell me a problem I want to try and resolve it for you! LOL. It all worked out OK, though she found one more baby roach today. She went to work today because she said it was less stressful than staying home and getting grossed out by the thoughts of roaches! When she came home, she said she cleaned out the cabinets and drawers in the kitchen, just in case, but didn't find anything (she was mostly looking to see if there were egg cases). Hopefully, this last spraying took care of the problem.

  2. Maybe you didn't get as much done as you wanted, but remember it was a work day and that took up much of your time.
Hope your daughter is feeling better today. Sounds like she had a rough day yesterday.

    1. Thanks, Live and Learn. Yes, working days, especially when going into the office, mean 11 1/2 hours that are not available for anything else! That's 1 hour for the morning commute, 9 hours at the office, 1/2 hr. for lunch, and another 1 hr. commute home. Yes, I work 9 hr. days (for 8 days and one 8-hr. day every two weeks), in order to have a day off every other week. When I work from home, I am still expected to put in 9 hours of work, but, I don't have the 2 hours of commuting time and I can take a few minutes to throw in a load of laundry, wash a few dishes, take a walk around the garden, etc.

Daughter is feeling a little better, today, she said. She went to work, since she didn't want to take two sick days off in a row.

  3. Hope you and your daughter get well quick! The fact that you are there when your daughter needs you, is wonderful. That's what counts in life! Andrea

    1. Thanks Andrea. Yes, being there for each other is very important to us. I offered to come up for the weekend, to be there in person, but she said not to, because she didn't want me to catch her cold and sore throat. But I shall go up for a visit when she's better (or have her come down).

  4. I never get as much done as I plan to do on any given day and since I am now living in the present (or at least trying to) I am not going to worry about it. Today seems to be a totally self indulgent day. I had lunch with friends, visited with Mom and hopefully am going to a play tonight (depending on TheHb's work schedule.

    1. I try to keep my daily to do lists to what seems reasonable amount of items, but I have another "Things I'd Like to Do/Want to Get Done" scrolling through my mind at all times. I pick items from that list to add to my daily to do list, but that other list is a mile-long list and only inches are getting accomplished on any given day! That's where the frustration lies!

I am glad that you are having a good day, today. Hope you were able to go to the play. Looking forward to seeing how the living in the present experiment works out for you. :)

  5. Oh your poor DD. I think I'd have been close to tears as well with the roach situation and everything always seems worse when you're not feeling well - although I don't imagine there's a 'worse than worse' for roaches. Sometimes we just need our Mums don't we and although she couldn't actually be with you I'm sure being able to talk to you would have been the next best thing.

My sister used to live in a house where she'd get up to find slugs crawling across her kitchen floor. Not too bad until the children came along - she said there were many nights where she'd stumble half asleep into the kitchen to make bottles and one would squelch under her toes!

Hope DD is feeling better soon and the problem gets sorted out for her and the other tenants. xx

    1. Thanks Suzanne. Oh, I don't know if I'd have been able to deal with slugs inside the house! They are bad enough out in the garden!

The problem with living in apartments is, if one apartment gets an infestation, it can spread to the other apartments fairly quickly.

Daughter was asking why she had to be one of the apartments with the roaches and I was telling her it was a sign that she should move back home! LOL. She just signed the renewal of her lease, but otherwise, she might have just chucked up everything and moved home!

Hope you are having a good week, Suzanne.

  6. I'm glad you could be of some comfort to your daughter. We had roaches once when we rented this horrible place down in New Mexico when hubby was stationed there. I hated the place, hated the roaches. They make you feel quite horrible and I'm honestly not a fan of creepy crawlies. I hope she gets rid of them! I was so glad when we got a base house and moved out.

    1. Thanks, Sharon. Yes, this is the 3rd time the exterminator has been out to spray her apartment, so, hopefully, 3rd time lucky, and all that, and there won't be a need for a 4th time! Keeping my fingers and toes crossed!

  7. I can fully understand your daughter's frustration and upset over being unable to rest in her own home! Durned bugs! Our son encountered them in his first apartment and amazed me by dealing with the problem on his own. He used some powder and also caulked around the baseboards and made sure he always put something in front of his door in case any came in from the corridor. He was successful but decided to use the oven one day and guess what was inside? But he did eventually get rid of those beastly roaches. I hope that the work of the exterminator will be successful and that your daughter won't have any in there ever again.

It was such a lovely sunny day today, and the sap was running well after a cold night. I'm finding it extra busy this year as it coincides with Holy Week and there are services I like to attend and also we are expecting the family on Sunday so there are meals to plan. We are fitting in another bottling tomorrow, too.

    1. Thanks, Bushlady. I don't think daughter will be allowed to caulk, but I will suggest putting a rolled up towel or something down in front of her front door. This is the 3rd time the exterminator has come out to spray her apartment, so, hopefully, they have all been sprayed and taken care of.

Sounds like you are having a very busy week with lots going on! Hope you'll have a quiet spell after all the syrup making and bottling is over. Enjoy your Easter with the family.

  8. Poor DD, being ill, having a cold and ENT symptoms are heightened when vermin infestation makes it feel worse! We had a landscaped pond at Foreign Expert's Residence in China...really pretty but it resulted in an infestation of miniature frogs. Baking soda sprinkled along baseboards identified froggy footprints to help us figure out their routes. I've found it helps with ants in this complex.

Should you choose to visit someone ill, it's common to get medical rated face masks from a hospital pharmacy or a pharmacy whose client base works at the hospital. A teeny bit uncomfortable/strange feeling but very commonly used in other countries in flu season or visiting patients.

Our Oncologists aren't too enthused about waterless hand cleaner but they ask us to mindfully wash our hands with soap somewhat OCD like and emphasis the importance of keeping our hands away from our face as much as possible.

    1. Yes, things feel worse when one is sick! Oh, my! An infestation of frogs! Who'd have thought?

I do have a box of face masks. I used them when I was under treatment on visits to the clinic, etc. I wouldn't want to wear one 24 hours a day, though, which is what I'd need to do if I went to visit daughter while she's sick. It wouldn't be a short visit as I'd spend at least the weekend with her. Better to wait and go when she's fully recovered.

Hope all is well with you and you are enjoying some spring weather.

  9. OH my word! That is the HUGE downside of apartment life...if 1 unit has "an issue" the bugs go for the cleaner places....ugh!! When hubby and I first got married, we lived in an aptmt for 1.5 months precisely because of this. I LOATHE bugs! I hope she feels better SOON!

    1. Thank you, Joy. She is now finding dead bugs, so, I guess this last spraying is working! She's starting to feel a bit better, although she came home from work early, yesterday, because she felt tired and nonproductive. I think resting over the weekend will help. Hope you are having a lovely weekend.

  10. Oh bless your daughters heart. How sad, the man did not arrive until 5 pm, after she waited all day.. Know it is hard for you, that she wanted her mama and you could not be with her. so sorry.. Nothing like our children being hurt/sick/or worried..
SO happy you are able to work from home, when you are not feeling well.

    1. Thank you, Judy. Yes, it was hard when she was saying she wanted me there so she could hug me and have "mommy make it all better" again! And, yes, she could have at least rested properly if she had known he'd come at 5:00 p.m., rather than be on the lookout for him and fretting about it. But, such is life. At least, he came and sprayed. That's the important thing.
