February Grocery Shopping: Week 4

March 1 Grocery Shopping

I never did that last grocery shopping trip in February, as I didn't feel well.  Instead, on Wednesday, March 1, I did a small grocery shopping trip and bought:

1 loaf of bread = $1.29
1 lb. butter = $2.99
1 pint milk = $1.19
1 pint half and half = $1.79
2 lb. banana @$.69/lb. = $1.38
2 bolillo rolls = $.50
Total = $9.14

Butter was on sale for $2.99 and I debated long and hard if that was the price at which to stock up.  I decided to buy just one package for now and hold out to see if it goes on sale for $2.50, at which price, I'd stock up.  I am hoping that it works out that way.

I had $9.45 left in the February grocery budget.  So, even though I bought these groceries on March 1, I am going to consider it as my February Week 4 grocery shopping.

March 1 Grocery Receipt

February grocery budget = $75 + $20.53 carried over from January = $95.53
Spent to date = $10.11 + $24.69 + $51.28 + $9.14 = $95.22
Balance remaining = $.31

How's that for budgeting to the penny?  LOL.  I will not carry over anything from February into March.  The March grocery budget will be $75, as usual.

How did you do with your February grocery budget?

  1. Do you take a calculator into the store with you or did you just get lucky staying within your budget?

    1. I just got lucky, this time. :) I thought of getting a dozen eggs ($1.99) but they had a "best by" date of March 17 and I knew I couldn't get through a dozen eggs in approx. 3 weeks, so I didn't buy them. Had I bought them, I would have gone over budget. If that had happened (gone over budget), I would have considered it a March purchase.

I have the calculator app on my phone, if I need it, but I generally don't use it.

  2. Ha! I've been debating whether to stock up on butter at $2.97/lb or wait too. Maybe that's as low as it's going to get? Decisions, decisions!

    1. It's a gamble, isn't it? I am hoping that it will go down a bit in time for Easter. Will have to wait and see!

    1. I must admit I feel ridiculously pleased with myself over it! :D

I don't worry too much if I go over or under in a given month because I generally carry it over into the next month and it evens out. But, if I had to, I can manage to stay within each month's budget and eat well.

  4. I thought the price you paid for butter was very good but it may come down closer to Easter. .50 for 2 bolillo rolls is much cheaper than my usual store.

Do you have a CVS that is not out of your way. They have eggs this week with a store card for .99

    1. Sandy, yes, I do have a CVS nearby. I usually go there to pick up my medications, actually! I need to pay closer attention to their ads!

  5. You did well to be under budget and really those purchases are for March eating so that is even better. I am going to have to buy butter at the high price it is at the moment I have about an ounce left, and this weeks brochures still have it as special at $4.60. I only started to budget properly 2 weeks ago, but I am very pleased at how I went.

    Have a great day!

    1. Thank you, Sharon. That does sound like a rather high price for butter, but sometimes there's nothing much we can do other than going without! Glad to hear that you are pleased with how your budgeting is going. Hope you have a lovely day, too.

  6. Great job, Bless! To the penny, indeed! My February budget was high but like you I roll it over, so it worked out since I'm doing a pantry challenge again this month.

I am also keeping an eye out for butter sales, although I suspect they will occur in April here. And I also need eggs. Both Walgreens and CVS must have them on sale, so I may grab the limit at both stores to carry us through the month. We eat quite a few eggs, here.

    1. Thank you, Laura. I'm rather pleased with how it worked out! I am going to check CVS, today or tomorrow, to see if they still have the eggs on sale. I eat one to two eggs a week, so a dozen will last me a long time.

  7. I always get my eggs at CVS when they're on sale for 99 cents, which is quite often, because you can use ECBs to cover the cost and get them for free (I use, as you know, either that or a CVS gift card that I earned via one of my credit cards' rewards program).

You did wonderfully well with your February grocery shopping total! Way to go!

    1. Thank you, Nathalie. I am definitely going to look into the eggs at CVS! Usually, I just go in, get my prescriptions, and leave! Hardly ever shop there!

  8. WOnderful job on your Feb. Budget..
In our area, butter normally goes on sale during the Easter holidays. I bought up a good bit, during Thanksgiving and Christmas..So, I am pretty well stocked.. However, If they run it for $1.99 [our sale price normally???] I will buy more .
Our CVS has eggs for 99 cents too. Hope you are able to get them to.

    1. Thank you, Judy. I am hoping the butter will go on sale at Easter. Eggs, too, no doubt! I am not baking a lot right now, so a pound of butter will last me at least 1 month to 6 weeks and a dozen eggs will last me at least 6 weeks to 2 months! I've not tried freezing eggs, but I've read it can be done, so, might try doing that, too. Need to find room in my freezer!
