Voiceless Sunday

I woke up feeling a lot better, this morning, but unfortunately, I have mostly lost my voice!  I suppose all that coughing strained my vocal chords.  But, it's not like I was going to give a public speech, or audition for a role in a lifetime, or anything like that, so, it is OK.  :)

I got up very early at one point, this morning, maybe around 5:00 a.m., when I heard it rain!  Yes, the sound of rain is still novel enough to wake me up!  But I resisted the urge to run to the window to verify it was really raining (seems like the first thing we here in So. California do when it rains!).  I fell asleep again, listening to the sound of the rain, and woke up again at 6:00 a.m.  I tried to go back to sleep, but I felt wide awake and wanted a cup of tea.  So, got out of bed, had a cup of tea, and replied to comments on my blog.  Later, I had a tuna sandwich and a fresh orange for breakfast.

I've had several phone calls this morning.  My aunt called to check on me and said her daughter, my cousin, has also come down with a cold and cough.  Cousin had been wanting to accompany me to the doctor's appointment, tomorrow, and I had been telling her it was not necessary as I didn't want her to get exposed to my germs and get sick, herself.  I'm sorry she's not well, but glad that it wasn't due to coming into contact with me!  My cousin gives piano lessons and a sick day means she's unable to teach and a loss of income for her, and I didn't want that to happen because of me.  After that, my neighbor called for our weekly Sunday morning chat.  Except I couldn't really chat this time without much of a voice, so we rang off after we exchanged greetings.  One of my friends called, too, to check on me.  Again, we spoke very briefly and I assured her that she didn't have to come to see me as I don't want her to catch anything from me.

Then, my other cousin called me to say that the friend who hosted the prayer gathering had sent a plate of food home with her to give to me and that she'll bring it over later, on her way to church.  I had assumed as much when she didn't call or come by, last night.  It was probably quite late when she got home and she would have assumed I'd already be in bed.  She dropped it off around noon, and I called my friend to thank her.  She had sent me vegetable rice, with beef curry (at the top at 12 o'clock), shrimp, eggplant, potatoes, chicken curry, and an egg.  A lot of food and I keep seeing a smiley face on the egg!

Lunch
All of it was too much for me.  I served some of it to another plate and warmed it up for my lunch.  The first mouthful had me reaching for a glass of water!  I have been toning down on the amount of chili I usually add to my cooking and my friend makes authentic Sri Lankan food which is very hot and spicy!  I enjoyed what I ate, but I think I'll freeze the rest for my daughter - she loves really spicy food and she'll enjoy this, a lot.

I had hoped to take a nap in the afternoon, but I did some office work, instead, and it took me longer than I thought it would.

Later in the evening, I watched the Academy Awards and video chatted with my daughter.  She had gone shopping, earlier in the afternoon, to buy some craft supplies she needed for the gifts she was making for her friends' birthdays.  The craft store is in an adjoining city and it is a bit of a bus ride there and back.  I have always worried about her traveling to and fro on her own, but certain recent events have made me feel even more nervous.  But she had a safe shopping trip, bought what she needed, and made her gifts, so all is well.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Rain in the morning
- Feeling much better even if I lost my voice
- Daughter had a safe shopping trip
- My friend sending me a plate of food and my cousin bringing it over to me
- Family and friends calling to check on me

Tomorrow, I have a follow-up appointment with my radiation oncologist, in the early afternoon.  I am not planning on doing anything much, other than that, but trash cans need to be taken to the curb and the dishes ought to be done!

How was your Sunday?  Did you have a good day?  What have you planned for Monday?  If anyone has made any monthly goals, how are you coming along with attaining those?

  1. Oh dear, it seems to be one thing after another doesn't it. Mum had a cough for a good few weeks before Christmas. In fact it's only just really clearing up. These things tend to linger sometimes don't they.

We sleep with our window slightly open and I love listening to the wind and rain, I think it's one of the nicest sounds, as long as I'm warm and cosy inside that is.

You have so many friends and family looking out for you, it's quite amazing. It must be lovely to know there are so many people you can call on if need be.

I really can't tolerate spicy food at all but Mark likes it. If I'm making chili it's always mild and he'll spice his up with pepper. Makes my eyes water thinking about how much he puts on.

I've come to the conclusion we never stop worrying about our children no matter how old they are. In fact, I think I worry about Amy more now than when she was little.

Hope you get your voice back again soon. Take care of yourself. xx

    1. Yes, sometimes, I feel that I am just starting to recover from one thing when something else hits me to knock me back again! I know I grumbled about being restricted to the house and clinic when I was undergoing treatment, but I now realize the need for that! If I had got a cold and cough when my immune system was totally down, I might have got very sick, indeed.

I feel much better, today. The cough is still there, but the laryngitis is better. Hopefully, there won't be a relapse!

Hope you have a lovely week ahead of you, Suzanne. Take care.

  2. Glad you are feeling better, but sorry that you lost your voice. Hope your appointment with your oncologist goes well and that you get a good report. You certainly have a wonderful support system. I plan on doing some sewing today. My monthly goal was to lose five pounds, I lost two, so not so great, but still will chalk it up to a win. Hope the rain quits for you while you are out!

    Hugs

    1. Thank you, Jane. Glad you met part of your weight loss goal. Sometimes, it takes awhile to lose, but slow and steady is good. I hope you have a fun day of sewing! Looking forward to seeing what you make!

  3. A blessing to have your friend send a plate of food and good idea to freeze for your daughter. My husband likes spicy food but my stomach can not handle it.

Sunday was a relaxed day. As usual attend 8:00 am service and visit with friends at the coffee following. Managed another walk for which I am grateful. Took a short nap in the afternoon (I sleep poorly almost every night) and watched Victoria on PBS in the evening. The program takes a bit of license but it is interesting.

Today Monday I have stripped the beds and did a quick tidy up. Will make chili with turkey ground meat a bit later. My hubby loves chili and will eat it for several meals.

I am going to try and walk although my gimpy arthritic knee is playing me up.

    1. Sandy, yes, I had to cut down on the spices when I was undergoing treatment; used to get heartburn all the time. Morning church services and coffee afterwards with friends sounds like a lovely way to spend a Sunday morning. I rather miss taking my daughter to Sunday school when she was little, because the parents used to socialize while we waited and it was nice.

I hope your knee doesn't bother you too much and you can still manage to walk with it hurting. Do you have a knee brace you could wear? Or do you take some pain medications?

Hope you have a fine rest of the day and a lovely start to your week.

  4. Bless, I'm sorry you lost your voice and that your cousin is sick as well. I hope you all feel better soon.

I'm horribly sorry that you have to worry about your daughter's safety as she travels on the bus to the store. As females we always have to be on our guard, I feel, nowadays, but as a female of color in this current toxic atmosphere, I'm sure you and your daughter have even more reasons to feel nervous; I wish it weren't so, I am so sorry.

That was a lot of food that your friend sent over and I do see the smiley face in the egg as well!

I need to try to hit some of my February goals today but right now the windows are open, it's sunny outside and the birdies are calling and my favorite TV show is about to start on the TV. I shall do chores on the computer while watching it. Then I have to do the dishes as well, hang the laundry to dry, plant a tree, bake some cupcakes, maybe get started on our taxes... the fun never ends!

I hope your radiation oncology appointment goes well! Take care, please.

    1. Thank you, Nathalie. I texted my cousin this morning and she says she's lost her voice! But my voice is better, today, although the cough lingers.

I knew you'd know at once, what I was referring to, about being concerned about my daughter's safety, especially after the recent Kansas shooting. Seems like, these days, we've more to worry about than having our purses snatched, etc. She's already been ranted at by someone riding on a bus, but she dismissed it as an intoxicated/mentally ill person's ranting. I am being hyper sensitive, I guess.

Hope you have a lovely day and enjoy the sunshine and the birds and have a cupcake for me, too, won't you?

    2. It's a deal, my friend. Lots of (((HUGS))) to you and your daughter. What a world.

Have you tried Gatorade powder to mix with your water? It would help with your electrolytes and mask the taste of the water. I don't find it sweet (actually, it's more like a salty taste), which is why I don't care for it myself, but I drank some this morning to finish a canister that Greg wasn't going to finish entirely so that reminded me to suggest it to you. My local supermarket carries the canisters of Gatorade powder in various flavors.

Off to have that cupcake in your honor!

    3. Thanks, Nathalie. I haven't tried Gatorade powder. One of my cousins brought me some bottles of Gatorade when I got dehydrated, last time, but then, the doctor fussed about the sugar content and so forth. I sometimes squeeze a lemon into the water and drink it like that, but then, I tend to want a spoon of sugar in it, and that's not good, either! Infused water works, though - a couple of slices of lemon or orange in a glass. I do that, sometimes. But I am back to being OK with just plain water.

Hope you enjoyed the cupcake! :)

    1. Thank you, Judy. Feeling much better, today. Yes, I do worry about my daughter being targeted for violence because of her appearance, especially now, after I heard the news of two Indian men being shot (and one of them killed), in Kansas, apparently because of their appearance? A third person, who isn't Indian, was also shot when he tried to intervene.

Hope your husband's stress test shows good results; will keep you both in my prayers.

  6. Hope you are feeling better today and that your visit to the oncologist goes well. How good it is that your extended family give you so much support. I like the smiley face! I am so sorry you have to worry about your daughter my prayers go out to you and her.
Today I have had workmen in putting in a new air conditioning unit. Lots of banging and drilling, but it is all finished and I have cool air, Yay! I sometimes put a slice of fresh ginger in a jug of water it takes the metallic taste away.

    1. Sharon, yes, I'm feeling much better, today, thank you. I'm so glad the air conditioning is in place and you have cool air! Does it get very hot where you live? Is it humid, as well? That is the worst, isn't it? When it is both hot and humid. Oh, I must try a slice of ginger, in the water! Thank you for suggesting it!
