January Grocery Shopping: Week 1

Groceries: January 7

The New Year is one week old, already!  That first week went by quickly, didn't it?

I took a Tylenol, last night, before I went to bed and slept well enough.  I woke up feeling a bit stiff and sore, but not too bad, overall.  The shoulder hurts a bit, but that is to be expected, I guess.  I don't see any bruising, however, which surprises me, because I usually bruise very quickly.

It rained again, this morning, but it cleared after that.  I had a fairly quiet morning.  One of my friends called to see how I was feeling and my daughter called, too.  Later, after my morning cup of tea,  I made pancakes and bacon for brunch.  I had frozen the bacon in packets of 3 rashers each; cooked one packet today and I still have another packet of 3 rashers in the freezer.  I made 4 pancakes and ate 2 with 1 1/2 rashers of bacon; the other 2 pancakes and 1 1/2 rashers of bacon are in the fridge, for tomorrow's brunch.  No syrup on the pancakes because I no longer like the taste of syrup.  I took another Tylenol after I had eaten brunch.

Around 4:00 p.m., I went to run a few errands I couldn't do yesterday.  First, I put gas to the car.  I was down to quarter tank, so I filled it up for the week (or longer, depending on if I go to the office next week and how often).  It came to $31.97.  There was a person standing by the door, who held the door open for people going into pay and coming out; he wasn't actually begging, but I gave him $1.

Then, I went to the pharmacy to pick up my prescription refills.  I told the person assisting that I had a new insurance card but he checked their computer and said everything seemed OK, he didn't need to see my new card, so I guess my records were automatically updated?  In any case, I only had to pay for one of my prescriptions and it was $10.00.

Finally, I did a tiny bit of grocery shopping.  I am planning to eat from the freezer and pantry this month and both are rather full, so I really didn't need to buy a lot - just some eggs, bananas, and bread.  I decided to buy just half a dozen eggs, rather than a whole dozen, because I usually eat only one or two eggs a week.  The bread didn't appeal much to me, not even the French bread from the bakery section (as opposed to the packaged, sliced bread) so I bought some bagels, instead.  My total came to $5.12:

Receipt: January 7

1 package of 6 plain bagels = $1.99
6 eggs = $1.89
4 bananas (1.8 lb) @ $.69/lb = $1.24
Total = $5.12

January grocery budget = $75
Spent to date = $5.12
Balance remaining = $69.88

After I came home, I put away the groceries, made myself a cup of tea, and washed the dishes.  One of my aunts phoned and I chatted with her.  Later, I video chatted with my daughter.  Now, I am icing my shoulder for the first time for today.  I think I will take another Tylenol before I go to sleep tonight.

Today, I am grateful for the following blessings:

- Feeling more or less OK after yesterday's fall; only a little pain, stiffness, and soreness.
- Being well enough to run errands.
- The rain shower in the morning.
- The rest of the day being clear, making it convenient to run my errands.
-  Friends and family who email and call.

Saturday's To Do List:
- Put gas to the car - DONE
- Pick up prescription refills - DONE
- Grocery shopping - DONE
- Wash dishes - DONE
- Clean litter box (will do in a bit)

I haven't made any plans or a to do list for tomorrow.  There is plenty to do, of course, but nothing that I absolutely must do.  All will depend on how I feel.  But, if I feel up to it, I might do a little tidying up and wrap the last of the gifts!  And maybe cook?  I've some frozen fish in the freezer.  Some fish curry and dhal will be nice for dinner.

How was your Saturday?  What have you planned for Sunday?

  1. You had a full, productive and frugal day, yay! That's my favorite kind of day, usually!

This morning Greg and I wanted to go walking but it's in the low 30s and it feels like 28F at the moment so I'm thinking we're not going. I'm meeting Middle Son for lunch at noon, just the two of us, we'll be celebrating his upcoming birthday and then he'll come back over to my house to visit the kittens. Well, that's the plan. Oh and I need to give him his Christmas presents since we never did meet over the holidays.

    Have a great Sunday, Bless.

    1. Thank you, Nathalie. I was glad I could get my errands done.

Low 30s is too cold to go walking, anywhere, but especially in Florida! If you do go walking, bundle up well! Hope you have an enjoyable lunch and visit with Middle Son, Nathalie. Please wish him a happy birthday from me. :) Have a lovely day.

  2. I'm glad to hear that, although sore, you didn't do any more damage to your shoulder. That could have been very nasty. I have to go get gas for my car, but think I'll wait until tomorrow. Roads are still snow-covered and I really don't need to go anywhere. I need to get the wash done and house back to normal.

    Have a good Sunday!

    1. Thank you, Sharon. The shoulder feels much better, this morning, so I think it's healing nicely. I was anxious to run my errands yesterday because they were forecasting a major rain storm for today. So far, however, it has been clear and sunny!

I'm glad you don't need to go anywhere and can stay home and relax (and get some housework done.) Have a lovely day.

  3. OMG Bless. I just told Nathalie that there must be something terribly wrong with me. Instead of shock and dismay at your falling accident, I couldn't stop laughing. I have this image in my head from the point of view of your gardener friend, who must have been aghast at you coming straight at him at full tilt trying to recover your balance and falling into a crumpled heap in the doorway. I can see you raise your one arm very slowly to unlatch the door. I am going to attribute this hilarity to my fatigue. You often hear of people getting the giggles during a profoundly somber event (like a funeral) Well, this reminds me of one of those incidents. I was so glad to read that there was only some slight soreness the next day, and that you continue to improve.

    1. Ah, yes! It was a headlong rush to greet him! Only there was a closed door in the way! It's the stuff of old slapstick comedies, isn't it? :D Very Laurel and Hardy, or Charlie Chaplin! Don't feel bad for laughing; you have so much going on, you deserve a laugh or two and I'm glad to have provided you with one. :)

  4. Yes, mention it to the doctor. If the soreness persists, you may have soft tissue injury. You really gave that shoulder a wallop when you crashed into the glass.

It amazes me that you can go out to do grocery shopping and still come home and get all of those errands done. You put me to shame.

    1. The shoulder feels much better, today, thank you. I don't see any bruising, either. It helps to have a layer of extra fat under my skin to cushion any impacts, I think! :D

Thank you for saying that I amazed you with what I managed to get done, yesterday. :) I was feeling guilty for not doing more! I did my errands all in one go, yesterday - gas station is on the way to the pharmacy and grocery store which are in the same shopping mall. It took me a little over an hour and I felt that I should have done more housework before or after!

  5. Oh I'm really curious now, Bless. Is it fake syrup that you no longer like on pancakes or is it the real thing - maple syrup? If it is the first, then maybe you need maple syrup, which goes wonderfully with the bacon as well (I'm salivating as I type!). There are some pleasant fruit syrups available which might make a change for you. One of the things my family gave me at Christmas was a fancy bottle of blackcurrant syrup, which reminded me of how much I liked Ribena when I was growing up. Around here a local farm produces blueberry syrup which is great on pancakes, too.

    1. Ooh, Ribena! I almost bought a bottle when I was at the Sri Lankan store when I went to buy my almsgiving supplies! :D

Yes, it was the fake syrup. I could have made my strawberry sauce, I suppose, with the frozen strawberries, but I didn't bother to. In any case, I am off most sweet things, these days, which is good for my blood sugar. :)

    2. I couldn't eat that fake syrup having been spoiled with years of our own maple syrup (wish I could give you some). What many people don't know is that maple syrup has spectacularly more nutrients than in equivalent amounts of other sweeteners. Riboflavin, Thiamin, Manganese, Zinc, Magnesium, Calcium, Iron, Selenium and Potassium are all present in maple syrup, Riboflavin and Manganese in particular being especially prominent. Researchers have documented that maple syrup has a higher nutritional value than all other common sweeteners. It is even good (in small amounts) for people with diabetes.

    3. I shall certainly take a look at that site you recommended, Bushlady. Maybe, the next time I go grocery shopping, I'll look for a bottle of 100% maple syrup and give it a try. :)

  6. Pancakes and bacon sound yummy! I went for a few groceries today and have a few more to pick up this week. Definitely not going to be quite as low as your total!

I'm glad your shoulder is feeling better. I hope you have a great week!

    1. Good plan to get your grocery shopping done before you start classes, next week.
      .
I will probably do a bigger shopping trip next week. I will be needing a few more vegetables by then, I think, and more bananas.

Hope you, too, have a good week, Laura, and all will be well with you and your husband.
