November Grocery Shopping: Week 2

I bought two grocery items on Monday:

November 7 Groceries
Monday's groceries came to $2.00

I went grocery shopping today and bought several items:

November 10 Groceries

I bought:
1 loaf of bread = $1.29
1 package of pistachio instant pudding = $1.29
1 can of crushed pineapple in juice = $1.19
1 bag of mini marshmallows = $1.00
2 packages of roast beef cold cuts, $2.50@ = $5.00
6 cans of chicken broth (3 regular, 3 low sodium), $.49@ (with purchase of 10 participating items) = $2.94
4 cans of vegetables (2 corn, 1 green beans, 1 green peas), $.49@ (with purchase of 10 participating  items) = $1.96
1 container half and half = $1.79
1 bunch bananas, $.69/lb. = $1.24
Total = $17.70

November 10 Receipt

Some of the items I bought (the pudding mix, crushed pineapple, marshmallows) will be for the almsgiving.  Some of the canned broth and the canned vegetables are for donating to the food bank (which ever one I decide on).  The regular price of the canned broth and vegetables is $.99 per can; they were on sale this week for $.49 each with the purchase of 10 participating items.

November/Almsgiving grocery budget = $200.00
Total spent in Week 2 = $2.00 + $17.70 = $19.70
Total spent on groceries so far this month = $43.48 + $19.70 = $63.18
Amount left in budget = $200-$63.18 = $136.82

Today, I completed my office work for the week and sent it in, since tomorrow is a holiday at my work place.

Today, I also had my daughter re-apply to obtain health insurance through her employer.  She had originally applied to receive it when she was first hired.  But, since she had to pay for it and she still qualified to be included in my employer-paid health insurance at no charge, I had her change it and kept her on my insurance.  But, since the change in government will most probably result in the repeal of existing health care policies, I thought it was prudent to have her apply for her own health insurance.  Fortunately, the open enrollment period hadn't closed yet.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Daughter's health insurance open enrollment period was still in effect
- Another warm, sunny day
- Computer continued to work for another week (although there were a couple of "iffy" moments)
- Daughter is on her way home!
- Being able to buy groceries to donate.

How was your day?

  1. There are a lot of us out there that are trying to second guess what the new election results mean and act accordingly. I think you made the right suggestion for you daughter's insurance.

    1. Yes, I don't want to be worrying about health care coverage for her, especially since she has asthma. Time enough to worry when her contract ends in May! But we'll know more by then.

Hope you have a lovely day and weekend. :)

  2. It's lovely of you to donate to the food bank, have you managed to find one you feel more comfortable giving to?

Is you daughter coming for the weekend or a little longer. I can feel your happiness about seeing her from here! :) xx

    1. Thank you, Suzanne. My daughter will be here for the weekend; she leaves on Sunday afternoon. It felt so good to hug her and chat with her in person, last night. :)

I haven't looked into the other food banks in the area; I will do that next week. Or, maybe I'll just give this initial bag of food to the one in my neighborhood and then, research the others for additional donations. In the meantime, I will continue to put my donations together.

  3. I still have two 'kids' on our health insurance. We had to have one and I guess two is the same price as one so we kept the other on ours. We might have to rethink that.

I like it when the veg are on sale. I don't tend to use tinned veg but it is good for donating to food banks or the drives that are around at this time of year.

    Have a lovely weekend.

    1. It might be a good idea to at least look into health insurance options, so you can decide what's best for you and your family if things change.

I, too, don't use a lot of canned vegetables, but I keep a few items on hand for earthquake/emergency supplies.

  4. How fortuitous that canned goods go on sale when you are in a position to buy some to donate. You have made your financial outlay expand to include more food donations. More people will receive assistance through your efforts. Do you collect through the year or do you only begin the collection during the month leading up to Christmas, or Almsgiving?

    1. Ooh, I like that word, "fortuitous"!

I've donated items I've had on hand when the postal workers have their food drive in May, but this is the first time I've collected items to donate in the month leading to the holidays. I was inspired by my friend Angela (Tracing Rainbows), who is doing it as a "reverse Advent calendar". I wrote about it in my Vote on Tuesday post: http://bless2cents.blogspot.com/2016/11/vote-on-tuesday.html

However, last night, as I was talking to my daughter about it, she asked me why do it only before the holidays, why not throughout the year? So, I am going to give it some thought.

  5. Having been born in California and having lived for there for the first third of my life I have some basis for saying this but you don't have to post it if you'd rather not. California has changed a lot and I would never live there again. Living in Idaho with its conservative policies is so much better. That said, your daughter may be shocked by the cost of health insurance but if she can just hang on even with a low cost plan things are going to get better because Obamacare is going to be gone and rates are going to be much more competitive and I think the quality of healthcare will return.

    1. Hi Marylynn, I do want to keep my blog free of politics. But, affordable quality healthcare is essential.

  7. Isn't it crazy that you have to work so hard to give? I think people will be grateful that you made the effort x

    1. I suppose there are easier ways to give, too. But sometimes, the easier ways are not as satisfying. :)
