October Grocery Shopping Week 4!

Where does a person go when she needs to drive the car so the battery won't go down again?  Why, the grocery store, of course!

But first, I went to the gas station to fill up; I put $26 worth of gas at $2.51/gallon.  Then, because I felt the drive to the gas station wasn't long enough, I drove to the grocery store.  I thought I'll get myself some frozen corn because I was out of it and maybe another couple of bread rolls.  But the rolls in the bakery section didn't look too good, so I didn't buy any.

October 27 Grocery Shopping
Instead, I bought a can of refrigerated biscuit dough.  This particular item sells for $3.99 regularly, but it had a use by date of November 4, 2016 and was on sale for $.75.  I will not buy biscuit dough for almost $4.00, but when it is on sale for under $1.00, then, that's a good buy.  There were several cans of dough on sale at $.75 each, and I was tempted to buy two or three, but what would I do with all of them?  It's not like I can freeze them for future use.  So I just bought the one can.

I also walked around the grocery store, but didn't find anything else I wanted to buy.  So I paid for my two items (1 bag frozen corn = $1.00; 1 can biscuit dough = $.75) and came home.  My total came to $1.75.

October 27 Receipt
I only had one bag with me; I don't know why the cashier credited me with so many points!

Amount spent on groceries in October = $73.23 + $126.93 + $16.34 + $1.75 = $218.25
Amount left in budget = $261.59 - 218.25 = $43.34

I baked the biscuits once I got home and had two of them for dinner (along with leftover steak, from the other night).   I also cooked the rest of the strawberries before they spoiled and made strawberry syrup; I ate some of it with yogurt for dessert.

Flaky Biscuits Fresh out of the Oven

Today, I am grateful for:
- A warm, if cloudy day
- The three drops of rain that fell in the afternoon!
- An invitation to a party (a cousin's daughter's "sweet 16")
- Chatting with an aunt
- Video chatting with my daughter

How was your day?  Where would you have driven if you needed to drive but didn't have a particular place you needed to go?

  1. One of our shops is selling Millies' cookie dough for £3 and it makes 6 cookies. I won't buy that either. I can make millie's cookies with ingredients from my cupboard for a lot less and I get 3 times as many.

If I spend £8 in this store for the next 4 weeks I will get £5 added to my bonus card. I can easily do this by stocking up on frozen bits but the cookie dough still won't go in the trolley! xx

    1. I suppose some people will consider $.50 per biscuit (there were 8 biscuits in the can) or 50 pence per cookie is reasonable, especially when compared to prices one pays for them at a cafe and the convenience factor, etc. But I'd rather not pay full price unless I have to.

The biscuits did bake up nice and fluffy. I updated the blog to show a picture I took of them straight out of the oven.

  2. I haven't had canned biscuits in a long time, but they look very good in your picture. I hope I won't be tempted next time I go shopping and come home with biscuits that aren't on sale. :)

    1. Biscuits are something I eat maybe once a year and almost always when I find a can of them on sale. But I've never tried making them from scratch! Maybe something to try this winter.

  3. If I had to give the car a run, I would be very fortunate because I could take it across the highway and up the road where we used to live, which like ours is a country road, or go west on the highway for a few miles to enjoy the scenery (keeping out of the way of the huge transports, though), or there is a back road to another town which is most interesting and also out in the country. Now if I had a lot of time and didn't mind using up the gas I had bought, I would drive east on the highway for another 25 miles and then south for some truly amazing scenery, especially in the fall.

    1. Bushlady, it sounds lovely! I suppose I could have driven down to the beach or up into the mountains, but, to be quite honest, it never even occurred to me! Maybe next time!

  4. Bless ... you may want to have another mechanic take a look at your car. You shouldn't have to drive it every couple of weeks to keep the battery charged. While we were on a two week vacation we didn't drive my car (a 2011 model) and the battery didn't run down while we were away. We were told that later model vehicles (like yours) should be able to go for months without starting it with no problems. Just hate to see you feeling that''s normal and being inconvenienced for no reason. Just a thought. :).

    1. Carolyn, thank you for the suggestion. I probably should have taken the car to the dealers in the first place, but, as they say, hindsight is 20-20. :p

    1. Thanks, Judy. As I said in reply to another comment, above, I don't eat biscuits all that often and I've never tried making them from scratch! I am going to try making them from scratch this winter.

  6. Those biscuits look lovely. You can get them over here, but not always and never so inexpensive. I'm sorry you are so short of rain over there, I wish I could send you some of ours (though it hasn't been too bad this week) x

    1. The biscuits turned out very well, indeed. I want to learn how to make them from scratch, along with scones and Yorkshire puddings! The rain can be a mixed blessing, but it is much needed here.

  7. You know, I mentioned several weeks ago that you shouldn't have to drive your car every week to make sure your battery doesn't die, but I read this article from 2009 yesterday, Tips for Infrequent Drivers, that completely changed my mind, not because of the battery, but because of other issues that could develop if you don't drive your car regularly.

The biscuit dough was an amazing find! I would have bought all of them and then wondered why I did that when I got home, lol. Good going!

    1. The issue with the car battery is a temporary problem, I think (hope). Once I start going to the office, I will be driving the car regularly, 20 miles to the office and 20 miles back, and hopefully, I won't have to worry about it.

Oh, I was so tempted to buy more biscuit dough at that price! It said "do not freeze" on the can, but I've been reading that one can freeze the dough. Or, one could bake the biscuits and freeze. And there are all kinds of recipes using biscuit dough (I did a search on-line and almost ran back to the store to buy the rest of the dough!) My problem is, who is going to eat it all? There were 8 biscuits in the can and I still have 3 left.
