Documenting the Rain

It rained this afternoon!

I had gone outside, a bit earlier, to take the kitchen trash to the big black trash bin, outside.  It was warm and unusually humid, and I noticed that there were some dark clouds moving in.

It was blue skies with puffy white clouds on one side:

But the clouds were moving in from the south:

To the South-West

The cloud cover is due to some weather activity over the Pacific Ocean, according to the weather report, which said to expect some scattered light showers.

While I was taking pictures of the clouds, I noticed that there was another spike of flowers on another branch of the yucca plant:

A few minutes later, I heard the sound of rain and ran outside to document it!

This is a picture of the back garden while it was raining!  Do you see the rain?

Garden in the Rain

The rain lasted less than 5 minutes!  I took another picture of the paved area 5 minutes after I took the picture of the rain drops.  It had all dried up:

But the soil still showed where the rain fell - see those dark spots?  I think we must have received about 50 drops of rain!  LOL.  Bright sunshine, now, although there's still a bit of cloud cover.  The weather forecasters are still saying to expect scattered light showers, tomorrow.  Well, this particular shower was definitely light!

Dark, Wet Spots Where the Rain Fell
The picture above is of the back "lawn", by the way.  If you look really closely, you can even make out a blade or two of grass.

We are going to need a lot more rain that what we received this afternoon to erase the effects of the drought.

Have you had any rain, lately?

  1. I hope tomorrow is a rainier day for you! We have had quite a bit of rain here, lately. It is raining right now, in fact, and we had thunder and lightening earlier this evening while I was in class.

    1. The little rain we received didn't even wet the ground completely! You could see dry ground between where the drain drops fell! We really could do with some real rain.

  2. If you hadn't documented it, I probably wouldn't have believed you. *laugh* You don't want a lot of heavy rain for risk of mud slides, but a little bit more would be really nice. How about a couple of days with lots of scattered showers, enough to soak into the ground. I will wish that for you, and keep my fingers crossed. Fortunately, we have been receiving rain lately which has made up for the "drought-like" conditions of the past summer.

    1. Thanks, Susan. Can you imagine a rain where the ground stayed dry between the drops of rain? Not enough rain to wet the ground completely! There are some clouds to the east, this morning, but I don't know if we'll get any rain. I did put the sprinklers on last night, so the garden did get some watering.

  3. Oh my! It looks very dry. It can be VERY wet here at times so even after this summer our garden is very green and overgrown. X

    1. We are in our fourth year of drought, here. Our rainy season is in the winter, and last year, we were expecting an El Nino weather condition to bring us some rain, but nothing happened. We are all hoping for some rain, this winter. A few slow, gentle rain showers would help a lot.

  4. I hope you get more rain soon. You're long overdue. When we were at the campground in San Diego last week, there were rain clouds two mornings in a row but no rainfall. Does the San Diego area get more rainfall than your area? It was very green there.

    1. Carolyn, good questions. I did a quick search. Apparently, the average annual rainfall in SD is approx. 10 inches and they had almost 12 inches of rain in 2015. The average annual rainfall in the LA area is approx. 15 inches and we received about 9 1/2 inches. It could also be that we have more stringent watering restrictions than they.

  5. Yay! Maybe it was a trial run and you'll get a real downpour in the next couple of days. However, the ground is so dry, it'd probably better if it were a lot of light rain, to give it chance to actually absorb the water... Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

    1. Thanks, Nathalie. You might have to keep your fingers crossed for a long time, though. Today's rain showers fell much further south of the Los Angeles area! We have no rain in the near future. Forecast calls for sunshine and 100+ temps. by the weekend.

  6. Another one her with her fingers crossed for more rain for you. We've not had much here lately and even moving towards the end of September the weather is still mild and the sun is shining. It definitely won't last though and once it starts raining in the UK it doesn't seem to stop. xx

    1. Enjoy your nice weather for as long as it lasts, Suzanne. Have you gone camping again? Maybe try to get in a weekend away while the weather is still mild and sunny? Hope all is going well with you. Looking forward to reading your month-end post.
