Baby Shower Gifts and Card

Today, there was a baby shower for the daughter of one of my cousins.  I had started crocheting the gift shortly after my cousin told me the good news and had it completed in good time:

Baby Blanket
I used yarn I had in my stash and colors which were gender neutral, since my cousin didn't know if it was a boy or a girl, at the time.  Both yarns have a silky thread woven in, which adds a bit of a sheen, although it is difficult to tell from the pictures.

Later, my cousin told me the gender of the baby, but I decided to stay with the neutral colors for the blanket.  Yesterday evening, I made the card:

Baby Shower Card
Card stock, scrapbooking paper, a bit of lace that had a light blue ribbon down the middle, a teddy bear button from my button box, and cutouts using stencils I had bought earlier, when I was scrapbooking my daughter's baby pictures.  All items I had on hand.

The envelope looked too plain, so I decorated it a bit, too:

Envelope
There's a gingham heart at the back, to seal the envelope closed.

I had debated getting the mother-to-be a gift card from the store she's registered at, but I decided to give a cash gift, instead, so she can buy whatever is needed from any store.  She lives in New York and flew in for the shower, so she can't carry a lot of stuff back with her, but I am hoping she'll find room for the blanket in her bag.

One of my other cousins and her daughter and I went to the shower together.  My cousin who is the grandmother-to-be had asked us to come an hour and a half before the shower started, to help her with setting out the food, etc.  Afterwards, we stayed to help clean up, so I didn't get home till later in the evening.  But it was a lovely afternoon and evening, spent in the company of family and friends.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Being able to attend the baby shower
- Being able to help my cousin with her party
- Seeing family and friends again
- My daughter lending me a blouse to wear to the party
- Getting some of the leftovers to bring home for my lunch tomorrow

How was your Saturday?

  2. I love that blanket. It's great, gender neutral, ideal for an extra light layer but not too heavy. The card looks great as well. I agree with giving a cash gift rather than a card. It makes it easier for the mom to be, especially if they are feeling uncomfortable and can't get to many stores. x

    1. Thank you, Lyssa. Lemon yellow, mint green, and white, of course, are my favorite colors for baby items. It's what I used for my own daughter, even after I found out her gender. I did make a few pink things for her, later, but the first outfit I knitted for her was lemon yellow and the second was mint green.

My daughter, too, voted for the cash gift over the gift card. A little more practical, too, I think, as she can use it for anything.

  3. A lovely gift and card, Bless, which I'm sure were much appreciated!

My Saturday was nice, ran a few needed errands, spent time with Greg and our son, watched Law & Order DVDs, played with the kittens. I couldn't really ask for anything better!

  4. I'm always unsure whether people mean "gender" or "sex". Dictionary says: "sex tends to refer to biological differences, while gender refers to cultural or social ones". You reminded me to look it up.

    1. Thank you for clarifying that, Marylynn. :) I always thought the terms "sex" and "gender" were synonyms! But, apparently not! Good to know.

  5. An easy way to remember the difference between sex and gender is that there are two sexes: male and female as determined by our DNA. Gender as in gender identity can mean that people can choose to be which ever (or neither) sex they want, regardless of their DNA.

    1. Thank you. So we know the sex of my cousin's grandchild; I guess we'll find out about his gender in due time. :)

  7. What an adorable baby card. The teddy bear button makes an adorable embellishment. I could only dream of making a blanket like yours. You are very gifted. My middle son received a crocheted blanket when he was a baby and it became his favourite blankie. It went to Kindergarten with him to stay in his cubby for naptimes. I'm glad you had a lovely afternoon at the shower.

    1. Thank you, Susan. Glad you thought the card was adorable. :) I glued the button on as an afterthought, but I think it was a good addition. I would have liked to have added a small bow, too, but I didn't have any thin blue ribbon on hand.

The blanket was very easy to make. It is like an oversized granny square.

  9. I love the addition of the teddy bear button, too. The yarn sounds like the white yarn I am currently knitting with, which also has a silky thread woven in. I think the yellow jacket I knitted in 2006 for our daughter-in-law's baby, who turned out to be a granddaughter, also had silky thread. Like you, I find white, yellow and mint green are good colours for all babies.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. There were two bunny buttons, too, but I chose to go with the teddy bear.
