Road Trip: Part 1

Somebody Needs to Wash her Windshield!

I couldn't fall asleep until almost 3:00 a.m., last night and didn't want to wake up when my alarm went off at 8:00 a.m.  In fact, I didn't get up until 8:30 a.m.  So, my day got off to a later start than I had planned.  By the time I did all the things I needed to do, including a couple of things I should have done last night but didn't, it was just after 11:00 a.m.!  I was a bit exasperated with myself, but as my daughter pointed out, there really was no rush as we didn't have to get to Berkeley by a specific time.  So, we left the house a bit after 11:00 a.m., filled the tank with gas ($2.69/gal) and started on our road trip!

We'd been driving for less than an hour when we encountered a delay.  There had been an accident and only 1 lane of the freeway was open and traffic was backed up for miles!  It must have been a very serious accident because we watched several ambulances rush by and the medivac helicopter fly in and fly out again.  I hope whoever was injured survived and will recover from their injuries.  I am very grateful that we were not involved in an accident, but the delay added an hour to the drive time!

The rest of the drive was without incident.  Around 2:00 p.m., I stopped at one of the rest areas.

Rest Area

We used the facilities and sat in the picnic area and had the lunch I had packed: ham sandwiches, cantaloupe slices, and apple juice.  I had packed some cookies and peanuts, too, but we didn't want them, then; we might have them on the return trip home.  We spent 30 minutes at the rest area and then, continued with the drive.  That was the only rest break we took.

I drove the whole way as I felt fine, driving.  But, by the time we reached Berkeley a little after 6:30 p.m., I had been driving for almost 7 hours and I was a bit tired.  So I rested while daughter brought everything up from the car, unpacked her stuff, and made me a cup of tea.  Then she went across the street and got us a pizza for dinner, but I found that I can't taste pizza!  There's no fun eating pizza if I can't taste it!

Once we reached Berkeley, daughter realized that she had left the tickets to tomorrow's event at home!  Oh, no!  So, tomorrow, she will go to the university campus and buy replacement tickets!  She  was angry at herself for forgetting them, but these things happen, don't they?  After all, I forgot to turn off the heater until she asked me if I had.  Fortunately, we can buy replacement tickets.

Today, I am grateful for:

- A safe drive.
- No car troubles.
- Pleasant rest areas.
- Good weather in which to drive.
- A pleasant, relaxed drive.

How was your Sunday?

  1. So glad you weren't the ones in the accident and you made it to Berkeley safely. Palm to the forehead about the graduation tickets but what a relief that you're able to purchase replacements! Amazement at the fact that you only stopped once in 7 hours? Do you not have the same bladder issues as we middle-aged women all seem to have?! What is your secret?!
Sorry that you can't taste the pizza. You're right, it's no fun to eat when you can't taste it. Can you taste sweets? You should eat lots of sweets, then. That's what Dr. Nathalie orders.
Have a great time at Graduation! Hooza!

    1. Sometimes, I've been known to make 2 rest stops! LOL.

I can't taste salt. I can taste some sugar, but most of it tastes bitter! It is the weirdest thing! I'll crave chocolate, but when I go to eat it, it doesn't taste good!

  2. Wow, 7 hours is a long drive, but the fact you were able to do it is fantastic. I haven't commented on your last blog, but the saris you will both be wearing are lovely. So glad that even though the tickets got left behind it won't cause any major problems. We went away in the caravan once and Mark left all his clothes on the bed. We had to go shopping before we'd started. Amy has done the same thing as well. Not a stitch to wear apart from what she was stood in. As you say, these things happen. Hope the graduation ceremony goes well and your return journey is good. xx

    1. It's the little things like forgotten tickets and clothes that make for great stories and memories, later on. Whenever we talk about the graduation, no doubt we will also bring up the forgotten tickets! I am just grateful that it wasn't something worse, like a car accident, that will make the event even more memorable.

Hope you and your family had a lovely, relaxing weekend and your daughter is feeling better about her exams.

    1. Thank you, Carolyn. I enjoy driving, especially when the traffic is flowing.

  4. I'm glad you had a safe trip and can sort out the tickets. You mentioned the price of gas. Just to compare, I converted the litres we buy petrol (gas) here into US gallons, then I converted the £ to $ and we pay $6.16 per US gallon! But if we drove for seven hours there would be a chance we fell into the sea, we are so much smaller. Good luck tomorrow, I hope you are warm enough! x

    1. Petrol/gas is much more expensive in the UK! A few years ago, gas prices went sky-high here, with some stations charging over $5 per gallon. Back then, I drove 60 miles a day and I was putting $100 worth of gas to the car, each week.

ps. I remember my brother in law, when he was going through chemo, had the same problems with tasting food.. It was several items , he could not taste.. But, His taste did come back to normal after the chemo was over.. Hang in there. hugs.

    1. Thank you, Judy. On the bright side, the lack of taste keeps me from over-eating! :)

  6. So glad that the tickets could be replaced, must have been a shock to realize that they had been left behind. The worst I ever did was to pack for DH and forget his underwear! He was going to Peru on business and he had to go out to a mall and find some that would fit. He is 6.4 and Peruvian men are smaller build! Now we have general check lists for both of us whenever we go on a trip, but still have to remember extras.

When I saw the photo of the windmills I quickly read "Windmill DANCE" instead of farm!

    1. Yes, very glad we could buy replacement tickets. Daughter was a bit upset and angry with herself for forgetting, but as I told her, she's only human and we all forget stuff.

Well, the windmills were spinning, so I guess you could say they were dancing! :)
