April Grocery Shopping Week 2, Part 1

This Week's Groceries

Daughter went grocery shopping for us on Friday afternoon.  I sent her with a grocery list designed to take advantage of a "buy 10 participating items and save $5.00"; each participating item was reduced by $.50 per item.  Some of the items she bought, such as the boxes of cereal bars and the loaf of bread, are for her to take back with her.

Salad dressing = $2.99
Cereal bars, 3 boxes, $1.88@ = $5.64
4 pot pies, $1.49@ = $5.96
Crackers = $1.88
Half & Half = $2.59
Bread = $1.29
Soda, 2, 6 packs @ $2.49 + $.30 CRV* = $5.58
Chocolate = $1.50
Tax (on soda) = $.50
Total = $27.93

*CRV = California Redemption Value

I still have some of the soda we bought last time, but bought more to take advantage of the sale; the soda is for me to help with the nausea.  For some reason, ginger ale doesn't work for me, but cola does.  The chocolate is also for the same purpose.

She also bought 6 boxes of facial tissues from the dollar store for me, and I included them in the picture, but they are not included in the grocery budget; they are included in the "household" budget.

Receipt: Total Spent $27.93

This shopping trip didn't include any fresh produce.  Daughter is planning to go to one of the ethnic stores on Sunday to buy fruits and vegetables and she will take some of them back with her when she leaves on Monday.  Since I am back to buying groceries for both of us, the April grocery budget has been increased to $150.

April Week 1 grocery total =  $38.68
April Week 2 (part 1) grocery total = $27.93
April Grocery totals to date = $66.61

We had two of the pot pies for our dinner, last night.

Today, I had some flat bread with lentils and a vegetable curry for brunch.  Some of the crackers for afternoon tea (along with a cup of tea).  A salad (lettuce, cucumber, carrot, Bosc pear) with some sliced chicken breast for dinner.  All the fresh ingredients were washed with a vinegar and water rinse.

Salad for Dinner

It was another drizzly day, today.  Daughter woke up with a sinus pressure headache that has lasted more or less the whole day, so we had a quiet, relaxed day.  She looked for cheaper apartments to move into in the Berkeley area and took an afternoon nap.  I did a bit of paperwork and had a nice long chat with a friend who called.  She cleaned the litter box and I took out the kitchen trash.

Today, I am grateful for:

- More rain for the garden.
- A quiet, relaxed day.
- Feeling OK for the most part, after yesterday's chemo session (had a bit of nausea early in the morning).
- A nice long chat with my friend who called.
- Having a working car, again!

How was your Saturday?  How is your April grocery shopping coming along?

  1. Hi Bless. Just wanted to let you know I enjoy reading your blog. I found it through Nathalie's blog. I understand you're in southern California? I live in San Bernardino county in Ontario. We've been having the rain on and off and I am enjoying it. It gets so hot here in the summer. Have a great day.

    1. Hi Maria. So nice to "meet" you! Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment. Yes, I'm in So. Cal., L.A. county. We do tend to get a little excited when we get some rain, don't we? Hope you are having a lovely weekend. Look forward to hearing from you again.

  2. I love those pot pies! I may have to keep an eye out for a sale on them at Publix. They are a yummy treat.

    I've found that both cola and ginger ale work on an unsettled stomach, for me. Cola works best when I have a bad migraine. I only keep ginger ale on hand, though, because I really just enjoy cola too much and tend to drink it whether or not I feel poorly!

    I found your blog via Nathalie and I am enjoying reading back through your posts. I hope your chemo treatments continue to be manageable. ((hugs))

  3. Hello there :) I've finally managed to visit you. I'm sorry to hear you are having chemo, that's tough, but I love your positive outlook with your 'today I am grateful' for list. It's very inspirational especially as it's so easy to fall into the trap of focusing on the negatives rather than the positives in our life so it's lovely to read your list.

    I will be visiting regularly and catching up with your story. In the meantime, I hope you daughter is feeling better and that your nausea has worn off. Have a lovely day. xx

    1. Oh, I am so glad you were able to visit me. :) Yes, I try to count my blessings and focus on the positives. There is much to be thankful for, I think.

      Looking forward to hearing from you again.

  4. I hope you and your daughter are both feeling better today. I've spent quite a bit on groceries already. My quick trip for a few things yesterday ended with a cart full and almost $100 gone. I did get more fruits and veggies yesterday than normal, so that's good. I ran to Wal-Mart today to pick up some ant traps (I've got them horrible for some reason at the moment and they've emptied out the other traps) and picked up 3 more gallons of orange juice at $5.67 each. I cringe a little at the price, but it's my son's absolute favorite thing to drink, it's really the only thing he wants to drink. He always wants me to fill up his sippy cup with his "ju". I buy the 'kids' one that had extra calcium and vitamins added to it.

    I'm, hopefully, going to stay out of the store for a while.

    1. It's so easy to spend $100 on groceries, these days, isn't it? Everything costs so much. Good of you to get more fruits and veggies. I haven't bought orange juice in a long time, but I think a gallon costs even more, over here. This week's sales ad says that a 59 fl. oz. carton (which is a bit less than 1/2 gal. as 1/2 gal = 64 fl. oz.) is on sale for $2.99 if you buy 10 participating items; otherwise, it is selling for $3.49.
